Question about ID card

Exactly!

I don't get this fixation with lanyards? They are tacky and scream ( just like these giant ugly insulation mugs) American Tourist.

people dress up but then walk around wearing their keycard and holding their drinks like they were still in kindergarten.

I guess it is very different because our cruises are charters and when we board, our cards are pre-punched and we get a lanyard as we board (if it is not already attached to the card). So it isn't really tacky if most on the ship are wearing theirs! And you can spot shipmates in port a mile away! (I don't wear mien around my neck in port).

Why do you think it is a fascination? It's just an option. :)

During the day on the ship I may be just wearing a a bathing suit and t-shirt or tank top so just hanging it around my neck is convenient.

With a lanyard attached to a card in the slot machine it is also less likely that I will walk away with my card still in the machine.

The card on a lanyard also means less chance of it being near my iphone and getting demagnetized, requiring another trip to the Front Desk.

So, there are advantages, for me. :)

...holding their drinks like they were still in kindergarten.

Trying to imagine what this looks like.

The casino used to give out squiggly plastic cords with lobster-claw clasp on one end. The other end was a metal circle that affixed to a hole in the ship keycard.

The purpose was so you didn't easily leave your card in the slot machines after playing ... they were hooked to the squiggly cord and to whatever you fastened it to.

I saved some of those cords and use them to this day, asking Casino/Front Deck to punch my card. It's useful not only in the casino, but I can clip it onto my purse/daybag, stuff the keycard inside the bag, and not have to hunt for my keycard.

Just my 2¢...

What about when you give your card to a bar tender or waiter?

New ships like Nw A and Eurodam... you need the card to turn the cabin lights on. OK, all will have that system eventually.

I prefer a nice small wallet for the card. Not the cheap paper walled with the cards and deck plan.... but a nice wallet.... like a policeman's badge. Always hand for a few extra dollars for tips or including business card, other card or whatever.

Here a sample of the Cunard type. Crystal... very nice. Saga does one also. One I do like a bit of information on Saga cards... a Emergency Telephone Number 24 hours at Head Office. All you need to do is call them and they will get you... somehow... and they will get agent whatever.

It goes with a lanyard and comes back with it. Believe me, they have dealt with 2,000 cards on lanyards without an issue. ;)

A card with a lanyard on it fits just as well in the slot for the lights! We usually have another (dud) credit card sized card on hand for the lights. :)

A nuisance and I'm quite certain that not everyone uses the lanyards.

So the 'dud' credit card is for the lights? So you have to have another lanyard for that one?

For the lights... it is a good security item... and keeps it always handy.... if it is always in the correct slot. Like in the other doors... the small 'holder' on the door.

Hey, at the end of the day.. if you want to wear it. If you don't... don't bother!

Wearing ashore with the lanyard around you neck? Bad enough to advertise that I am 'cruise passenger'... funny people you know. Might give someone the wrong idea.

This is a little off topic but beware that some sun lotions will remove the printed barcode from your card. Happened to both of us this year. You just need to go to the front desk and they will make you a replacement.

I am sure not everyone, but the vast majority does. :)

Yes. The I don't carry the dud card for the list around the ship (it stays in the cabin, right by the slot), so it does not need a lanyard.

I get a hole punched at the front desk and add carabiner clip with a tiny split ring on it. It clips to my belt loop by my pocket, if it falls out, it's still attached. In town I have loops in my purse to hook it to, so it will not fall out. It's fast enough to unhook for use. Lately I've added a very tiny flat flash light to the clip as well.

I don't care if someone chooses to wear their card around their neck. It's not my cup of tea but I would never insult someone who does. HOWEVER, I definitely don't think that the vast majority of people wear their card on a lanyard. At least not on the cruises I've been on. Some do, most don't.

I am speaking of a very specific case: RSVP charters. ;)

After wearing my company ID on a lanyard or clipped to my clothing, am no longer a fan of the 'lanyard club'. Did experience 1 lady with hers in a little case on a lanyard with some cash tucked in behind it and after she made a purchase in Valparaiso, a young man ran by, grabbed the lanyard and took off. As with anything else, just be careful when in public.

I do use the lanyard when on the ship because my sun dresses don't have pockets and most of my shorts have very shallow pockets and things easily fall out. I don't carry a purse on the ship except a dress purse when going to dinner. I also don't wear the lanyard on shore but I do carry a purse so it goes in there. If I had regular pockets I would probably just use those but it doesn't work for me. My husband just uses his pocket.

Not to be arbitrary but for that matter, no one has ever lost their lanyard with key card? :D

Yes. In Punto Arenas it slipped out of the plastic sleeve somehow. All that was left was my CC name tag. Another pax found it and boarded about 10 minutes after I tried. I had already gone through everything and the third degree by the SO. And explaining why the name on my CC name tag didn't match HAL records (but my face did). He had just cleared me and was sending me to the front desk when the other pax yelled out "is *************** here?" They had my card.

So for me, it's a hole punch and a retractable reel pinned to my garment (with a tiny "Concordia" LED light attached "just in case".

Some good reasons... some are bad, mostly bad!

OK.... you wear it all round you neck.... sun tan... sweat... yuk!

You hand it over to waiter or bar tender ... other people get to handle it .... sits on the bar or on your tray.... hand it over your neck again.... all over again. After a week you know more about people than you want to!

Are you sure want to really want to hang it around you neck?

I'm the lucky one that gets behind the little lady who is digging in her pocket book looking for her card holding up the entire line of people because her walker is blocking both lines and she can't find it. Then she goes through all her pockets! Nope not there and insisted she left it in her room!

I wish she had a lanyard

Good point. Some folks should have their cards stapled to their foreheads (LOL).

I started cruising 40 years ago. For about 38 of those years, I put my sea pass (originally a cardboard card for boarding) in my pocket or in my purse and had to dig it out whenever I needed it.

I have lost several over the years and needed to have them replaced. I am also done the frantic "Where did I leave the card" search when leaving the cabin.

Two years ago, I tried the sea pass on a lanyard and found it was a something I should have done a long time ago. No more digging for the card or losing it in the cabin as the lanyard is hung on the door knob or handy hook.

I do wear the lanyard off the ship as it makes it much easier to "ding" out. Once off the ship, I tuck it away in whatever bag I am carrying and put it back on just before going through the port security.

My question is why does one need a lanyard at all? :D

I've been on well more than 90 cruises and somehow have always managed to never lose my card.

And if you do lose it, they will give you a new one. The lost card does not identify your room number so there are no security problems.

Just because your card is on a lanyard does npt mean you have to wear ti 24/7! You can take it off while getting some sun, just as you would if you wanted to take a dip in the pool or rinse of under a deck shower.

Your id card sans lanyard gets handled by just as many people. Maybe even more people touch the card than if it was on a lanyard.

Lanyards are indeed a personal choice, but my spouse and I have ongoing discussions on this topic. He loves a lanyard. I hate to wear it around my neck, but have some pants with no pockets or tiny ones, and don't want to bother carrying a purse on the ship. So...

My card is on a lanyard, but the lanyard is looped around a belt loop on the pants if available. I did have issues with the card slipping out of tiny front pockets, and it saved me aggravation with those slacks. If no belt loop or pockets, either the spouse carries my card in his pocket or I slip the lanyard under my shirt.

I'm always asking my spouse to put his lanyard under his shirt when we are off the ship, as to me it makes it REALLY obvious we are not just tourists, but on a cruise. I've kind of given up when aboard a ship, and blame his unique fashion sense, right up there with his sandals and white socks:eek:

Yes, I rather figured that part out. :D I was sure they would have a method to replace it.

Each to their own.

It isn't the 'right look' for me. :)

How can people touch a card more just because it does not have a lanyard? Must be one of them survey things.

The end of the day... I don't want ANYTHING around my neck that other people are handling!

My question : Why do you need a holder for it ? Just get a lanyard and have customer services punch a hole in it.

With a holder , every time you want to use it . It has to be removed .

We used to do holders until we found out about lanyards.

This is exactly what we do but in our case we have retractable lanyards which we attach to our purses or our pockets to hold our Key cards.. My card is always hidden in my pocket or purse & the attachment looks like a piece of jewelry attached to my purse or pocket..They reteract up to 36 inches..

BoojeeBeads has some lovely retractable lanyards..They go from $5.00 for a plain one up to beautiful jeweled ones for $15.00..I bought one for every girl/lady in our family, (all different) & plain ones for the men..The girls/ladies love them..

The jeweled blue glam one is only $8.00

Amazon has a bunch of boojee beaded ones too for $6,50 & up:
