Dishonest cruise passengers

Recommended Posts

A few years ago we had a man pick up my wife's D 7000 and walk away from customs. We found him entering the car garage as he was pulling off the bright orange name tag with my wife's name embroidered on it.

My 27 year old son told him to hand over the camera. The guy said to ......... ourselves. I turned to get security and turned back as I heard the knuckles on jaw sound followed by the thud of thief to ground.

One son picked up camera, second son pulled name tag out of his hand, daughter screamed unmentionables at him and wife drug daughter away before kick was delivered.

I handed contact info to security in case some well meaning authority wanted to discuss western justice with us. No one did.

Thief removed self from ground to steal another day. I lectured boys and daughter on proper behavior then high fever all.

Sometimes you have to do it yourself.

Good for your kids :)

I miss my 20s and giving some moron a good old fashioned butt kicking . *LOL* I used to be really good at it too.

At 52 I am still in pretty good shape and might have one or two left in me . But now I have a good job, and nice house and a lot of expensive stuff that isn't worth losing over it.

On a recent rccl cruise I placed our bags outside the door on the last night as usual. The next morning when we got into the terminal one of my bags was missing.

Of course, we searched by every baggage pile, but there wasn't much left by the time we got there. We waited till the last of our large group was called and all left together toward the end of the debarcation process. We made a lost bag report and called several times to check on it over the next few days.

On about the 5th day after the cruise, I get a call from a hardware store owner a few miles up the coast from Port Canaveral. It seems my bag has been laying on the sidewalk in front of his store for several days. I was still in FL so I went to pick it up. Everything was there! Well, one thing was missing: the plastic bag our damp swimming suites were inside. ***?

Everything in the bag (a duffel bag) was our laundry from the cruise. No valuables at all were in the bag. Why would the take a plastic Walmart bag worth nothing? Fortunately, they left one of my 2 name tags on the bag and it had my cell number and last name.

The only thing I can figure was they wanted to get something through customs and using my duffel gave them deniability. "That's not my bag.", they might say if they were stopped going through customs. It must have got through, whatever it wss.

When a relative was dying in a nursing home, her family was with her late into the night. They finally left, but a few hours later they received a call telling them she had passed on. They returned to the home immediately and saw that her rings had been removed from her fingers. They were never recovered.

Not cruise-related but it does illustrate the depths to which thieves can stoop.

Another charming story....

We had stopped at an IHOP for a bite while in Key Largo and my mom noticed that she had forgotten her sweater at the table. We were only in the parking lot and I returned to retrieve it. I saw the waitress and asked her about it as it wasn't at the table. She said "oh, the white one with the pretty buttons?" I said yes, that's the one. She replied "no, haven't seen it!" We did not get it back.

Many years ago my wife forgot her purse sitting in a food court at the Mall of America. We had left the area and had walked halfway around the mall. I ran back there and it was gone. Luckily, a nice honest person had given it to Mall security and everything was still there.

I find there are honest people and dishonest people everywhere.

I use a small wallet for a metro card for the subway (NYC) and also had in it, drivers license, credit cards, AAA card, work id and a pass key. I was taking my cat to the vet and took the subway into the city and put my wallet in my shorts pocket. Once in the Vet's office I discovered the wallet was missing. I retraced my steps from the subway stop in Manhattan since I had the wallet to get into the city.

Upon getting home about an hour later I had a message from AAA, stating a NYC policeman had my wallet and was trying to reach me and to call them. Once connected to the AAA office she connected me with the officer. I was able to speak to the policeman who said someone had found it and given it to him. He was placing it with the local precinct and I could pick it up there. I was one happy gal. Everything was there, when I picked up the wallet.

I hope your camera turns up.

I have my name and address permanenetly as the first picture on my camera.

Our first picture have the same information, plus phone number. We also download all our pictures every day on our IPad. It is easy and fast, and if you are traveling with friends it is a good way to share pictures at the end of the vacation.

To the OP, a friend of mine had her Iphone stolen going through airport security. She made a big scene, videos were checked and the thief was found. Not a passenger but a TSA officer. Looks like he was't the only one stealing from passengers.

Going thru Customs 5/16 from a cruise on the Oasis, I accidently left my camera bag on the desk at Station 20 and when I went back about 5 minutes later, it was gone! Our pictures and a Nikkon D7100 with multiple lenses went home with someone who knew he/she was stealing a camera. Customs does NOT use cameras to monitor anything. RCCL uses facial recognition software to match you with photos taken on board. How can people be that heartless to steal your memories.

I left our video recorder on a small tour bus where we were the LAST group off the bus and only the driver/tour guide were left. They warned us about leaving valuables.

Called tour company within 5 minutes of being off bus and realizing I had left recorder on bus and they told us there was NO camera/recorder found on bus.

It happens! :( The good news is that many times people DO do the right thing.

Sorry for your lost.

Good advise. We now do this in the hopes a good samaritan will find the camera!

Somewhere on our loooong set of 3 flights back to Florida from Fairbanks after a 2 week Alaska cruisetour, I left my jacket with our camera in it. The camera was not an expensive one, but it contained all of the pictures from our 2 week trip. I got my daughter to go back to the Tampa airport and went through security footage with airport security and showed that I did not have the jacket when we arrived in Tampa. From there I filed out multiple airline lost forms. After a couple weeks I gave up hope. But about a week later we received a call from the airline lost & found that the jacket had been found. A week after that it arrived to our home with the camera still in the pocket. Funny enough there were a couple pictures of the people in the lost & found dept on the SD card.

BTW, there's an entire store in, I believe, Huntsville, AL, called "Unclaimed Baggage" http://www.unclaimedbaggage.com/

that sells unclaimed items left on airplanes.

I've been barked at by security, but I ignore it until I think it's "safe" to go through security. We don't put anything on the conveyor belt until one of us has a clear path to get through and be there to claim our belongings. Unfortunately, some of the world's scumbags purchase passage on cruise ships, and I know I would be BEYOND upset if someone took off with my camera bag.

We do the same thing. I usually back a second or two before I let my things go through. Then I collect mine and my DH's things, or stand there until he gets his.

Your wife was very lucky. A friend of mine did the same thing, left her purse at a restaurant (don't remember the exact restaurant) at the Mall of America and when we went back maybe 10 minutes later, it was gone. My friend was carrying so much other stuff she didn't realize her purse wasn't there right away. The purse turned up in a trash can later that afternoon - all the credit cards and ID cards were still there, but the cash was gone. I guess it could have been worse.

My purse fell out of the car on a road trip back from Vegas. We called my brand new cell phone in the purse and someone answered. They were almost passing my house by being on the freeway two minutes away. Over $100 cash still in it when it was turned over. It happened right before Christmas. I was ecstatic. I left a ring in my stateroom on a cruise about ten years ago. Some stranger is still wearing it...

My luck has been 50/50. Left my cell phone on the bed of a pretty skanky Days Inn in Miami. Realized I left it there on the shuttle to the cruise ship and used the Find My Phone feature to determine that it was still there. I called immediately and they insisted it wasn't there. They were very rude about it. My daughter called a couple of days later on the off chance that it fell under the bed when they stripped the sheets. They were very rude to her too.

On the other hand, I left my travel wallet at the check in counter at embarkation in San Juan last month. We were waiting in the terminal with hundreds of other people. Imagine my surprise when the woman who checked me in slid into the empty chair next to me and asked if I was missing anything that I might need for the cruise. Then she handed over my wallet which held my passport, drivers license, arm card, credit card and cash. She said the next people to check in gave it to her. She had to leave her counter to find me. Unfortunately other than to thank her profusely, I was so caught off guard that I didn't offer her a reward.

DPOSTMAN - I like your Tilley! And I know, as a Tilley wearer, you probably understand my pain - haha!

Happy travels in your Tilley! And don't forget to use the strap system in windy situations...;)

Judy

I have a very small head[-their smallest women's size] and Tilley doesn't make my hat in that nylon type fabric anymore. So, I am very possessive of my hat. Sure don't want to lose it. The straps are on if it is windy!!

We have a big Tilley store minutes from Downtown Vancouver if anyone is interested. On South Granville by Broadway.

We don't put anything on the conveyor belt until one of us has a clear path to get through and be there to claim our belongings. Unfortunately, some of the world's scumbags purchase passage on cruise ships, and I know I would be BEYOND upset if someone took off with my camera bag.

Yep, DH and I don't trust anybody anymore. We try to pace ourselves at Security so someone is there by the belt with the bags as they come out of the scanner. Not often easy if they stream two lines through a body scanner machine.

I think it was Newark, NJ that had the scanner operator under a big black curtain where the luggage goes right by him under the curtain. He had total access there to items going by, without your knowledge. Seemed an odd system compared to all the other airports we have gone through.

Some items can be turned in but take some time to make it to the Lost and Found.

If they are turned into an employee--- then it is probably at the end of their shift-- before it is turned into the area for them access. Unless they see a Supervisor to give it to. Then may still have further to go before it reaches L&F.

Airports for example are huge and it is either the Airline or the Airport to check if something is lost. It can take a few days though for it to get to L&F through the channels.

Considering the amount of people openly advocating smuggling booze on board or filing a bogus complaint to skip out on DSC, should we be surprised there are dishonest people on cruise ships?

We were very lucky on an RCI cruise a couple of years ago. My DH gave me his wallet to hold for him. We were sitting on the outside promenade deck. I put the wallet in the small purse that I always carry on our cruises. With out my realizing it, the wallet fell out of my purse when I reached in to get something out of the purse. About an hour later we discovered that the wallet was missing. We went to GS and luckily some honest person had turned in the wallet. GS called the person who turned in the wallet so that we could thank him. We offered to buy him a drink but he refused. Lucky for us, there are honest people onboard.

Criminals don't take vacations?

We were on a shore excursion to ruins in Mexico when somebody from the ship passed counterfeit money just before boarding the bus back to the ship.

We were met about a mile down the road by a machine gun mounted on a federal police jeep and made to back up the entire mile back to the shop.

After several minutes of negotiations between the police, ship tour guide, and passengers we were allowed to leave.

Security meet us at the gangway and escorted the family to their cabin where an intense search was initiated.

Being police officers we were able to get some info from security that more counterfeit money had been passed on the ship and found in the room.

Family was confined to quarters for the remainder of the trip.
