Was on the Dawn last week and ordered and was given 2 receipts to sign

You get 2 bills if you order soda also

7.95 for room service straight charge. No gratuity added in

Then soda tab which includes gratuity

NMLady.................

The second receipt was for soda & included a gratuity. It was NOT for gratuity only as you stated.

We have to wait for Harriet to return from her cruise this week to find out the answer!

LOL - I was just going to post that I leave on my cruise tomorrow and plan to order a tuna sandwich and a drink. I will report back. HOWEVER, if I'm charged the $7.95 I plan on paying it and then will request a meeting with the head of F&B as well as the HD and show them what the fine print says.

This can only be done during the 20 or so minutes after the post if made.... same as any editing here on CC.

I didnot mean the soda was not included. I was talking about what was charged in addition to the food or drink. The soda had only the gratuity. The other had the room service charge.

Some people think that by getting a soda in addition to food that they will not be charged for room service. Post #19 shows that not to be the fact.

You pay the delivery fee + the cost of food + the gratuity on the cost of food. It is not confusing except to people who don't want the rue to be what it is.

good luck with you meeting because if you are successful you will have the fine print changed fleet wide in hours.

It should be changed if they don't intend to honor it and only have it there to deceive. Sorry, but taking my order then splitting it into two orders so they can collect $7.95 on one part of it is just wrong. Why not be honest to start with? Why is that statement that exempts certain orders from the convenience fee even there if there are ZERO orders that qualify?

Well, but at least we will have some clarification, won't we!:)

It should not be necessary to form an Internet discussion group every time NCL comes up with something new on their website in order to discuss every possible interpretation and meaning, or to send out passengers tasked with testing it to see how it is actually being handled. Nor should it be necessary for US to inform NCL that their actual procedures do not mesh with what they say in print.

In my perception the OP has good questions and is entitled to thoughtful and knowledgeable answers; even if they are only 'some clarification'. Some answers here are neither; which is OK because it appears they are meant in jest and not to reprimand.

If you do not care for the question and/or discussion, which it appears to be the case with you here, please just move on and let others express their opinions and knowledge. Appreciate it. :)

Yup, really.

Yet, none of the facts are known; the rest has pretty much been speculation. This is an information board first and foremost; it be would most helpful to everyone to have the facts.

Please move on if you do not wish to participate in a positive manner. Appreciate it. :)

Cruisercl, I think we are on the same page. I totally agree with you, but you seem to have totally misinterpreted my post.

Please re read the post I quoted in my response. That post pretty much said that you pay the $7.95, plus the drink fee plus the 18% gratuity on it, and that the only people who had a "problem" with that were the people who wanted to believe that the actual policy was anything different.

I was simply pointing out to THAT poster that most people have reading comprehension and we can read something and interpret it correctly. We can see what the policy SAYS, which is that if you order a "fee" item such as a bar drink, the "convenience fee" is waived and you only pay for the drink plus the gratuity on it. And also pointing out the absurdity for NCL to write something which SAYS one thing when they perhaps mean another.

Maybe what NCL should have/meant to say was that "A $7.95 convenience fee will be applied to all orders other than the Contintntal Breakfast between 6:00 and 10:00 am. If a fee item such as a bar drink is ordered, the customer will be charged the drink fee plus 18% gratuity on that item, IN ADDITION TO the $7.95 convenience fee". Now that would have been CLEAR. Instead, we have this poorly written statement on the menu.

So, yes, it is understandable that the OP, as most of us do, have questions about this policy as it is written. And again, just pointing out the absurdity of a major company requiring it's customers to analyze their policy to determine it's actual meaning, and solicit real world experience to figure it out.

NCL I am sure has seen these questions over and over since the policy came out. So if the website statement is poorly worded and DOES NOT mean what it says, one would think NCL would have corrected it long ago. Or, come here and offered some clarification. But, nope. They just let us discuss and discuss and offer guesses and opinions, because, like I said, IMO, they really do not value communication with their customers.

But that isn't clear either. Because if I order something that has a charge on it, at any time, and only order that for-charge item, then that item does not incur the RS fee.

Maybe something like "$7.95 room service fee added to all orders that include any complementary items (except for orders with only continental breakfast items ordered between 6 AM and 10 AM). Orders with only non-complementary (paid) items do not incur the delivery fee. 18% gratuity added to all non-complementary items."

You're right, it shouldn't be necessary but NCL is doing such a poor job it's become a requirement to figure these things out. :(

Okay I ordered room service this evening. I ordered soup and a BLT and a ginger ale and a glass of wine. I was charged $7.95 for room service on one slip. The other slip was the charge for the glass of wine plus the 18% gratuity for the wine. I was told I was not being charged for the soda since I have the soda pkg. Tomarrow I plan to request a meeting with the head of F&B along with the HD. I want them to read what the room service menu says out loud to me and give me their interpretation of what that means. The Head of F&B is not from America however the HD is American and from Florida so he has a good grasp of the English language. I'll report back after that meeting although I don't know when it will be. OTOH I was under the impression that even if you had the soda pkg. or the Udp that did NOT include delivery to your room via room service....yet there was no charge to me for that soda nor was there an 18% gratuity charge to me for that soda. FYI - the casino gave me the soda pkg and the casino gave me the ultimate alcohol card. The ultimate alcohol card is only good in the casino however the soda pkg. they gave me is good anywhere on the ship.

Oh and I asked him where I should leave the tray and plates and glasses when I was done and he said in the cabin or outside in the hallway by my door.

Oh, absolutely! :) My next 3 cruises are RCCL, CCL, and CCL (already booked). I'll be very happy to never step foot on another NCL ship ever again. Carnival blows NCL out of the water anyway but I had to try NCL to find that out.

I do prefer Carnival too, for many reasons, but NCL is a good product, or was, we have enjoyed our cruises.

I will travel on whatever line I want and will complain about whatever policy I want. And so should you and everyone else.

Thanks for posting this. Look forward to see if anything happens with your meeting.

The answer for the dishes are leave them in the hallway or in the cabin. That should answer the question for all the people who seem to think we should pack a vacuum cleaner next time we sail.

Thank you so much Harriet for taking the time out of your cruise to give us this information that is based on experience not on speculation!! :)

This helps answer the original questions of the OP; looking forward to hearing about the conversation you have with the head of F&B and the HD.

Have a great cruise!!!

NCL really needs better writers, and they really need to change the wording on their disclaimer about the charges. It's a big problem when they write one thing and do another. At least I feel like I got the answer and can move on now. Good luck with your meeting, Harriet.
