My understanding is, that there is no Main Dining Room, there are more than enough restaurants, and an excellent selection, that will entail some forward planning through my silversea, that we all make as many reservations as possible pre-boarding.

 

I think I am very happy about this as usually dine at Terraza or Hot Rocks anyway, MDR has never really suited us except on Wind and Cloud and of course Explorer where till recently no choice but now hot rocks there was great in Cuba this month.😀

Some clarification on the initial voyages, courtesy of the London office.

 

If you look at the voyage numbers, the first one on public sale is 6703. 6704 is a "not for public" sale cruise. 6705 is being classified as the "maiden cruise" and will follow the christening. 6706 is the inaugural Venetian Society cruise and it is to be expected that special events will be arranged during both 6705 and 6706, although details obviously have yet to be planned.

 

Only full WC will get the opportunity to do just a three day trip on voyage 6706, because SS envisage selling out the ship for the whole of the 13 nights.

 

We did post back in May that there would be no MDR, so pleased to know that our source was correct!

We were hoping to do the inaugural but will be in Vietnam and Cambodia on our first river cruise.

 

Also disappointed that the end of season crossing is via the Northern route UK/Canada. We were rather hoping for a Spirit-style Med to Bridgetown or FL.

There is also a restaurant called "Regina Magherita" which they are billing as "for families."

 

So, the absence of a casino, the addition of a kids' room, a restaurant for families and no "supper club" seem to suggest a different target audience for this ship.

No MDR means that one will now have to reserve all the restaurants months in advance. Who wants to decide so far away where one will want to dine on any given night? That's not luxury, that's what you have to do on Royal Caribbean. And a kids room too? Count me out.

Perhaps that will lead to making one (or more) of the other ships totally child free.

There is a children's Room.

mDR has been split into two.

Atlantide and another yet to be named.

 

Will these dining rooms have separate menus? Or is it simply splitting the MDR into two so as to reduce the sense of mass and, incidentally, to add to the total number of dining choices for advertising purposes?

I agree, this is a major disappointment, we have just been on the same voyage on the Whisper and were very interested in a warm first crossing.

 

Looking at the deck plans it is a shame that the major faults of the Spirit are being replicated, i.e. the central main bar/reception, small theatre etc. And once again a small or useless card room. At least they have kept the Connoisseurs Corner (for you and the Gasser no doubt!). As for the lack of a casino and the provission of a children's room, well it will be the first cruise ship without the former for me. Also we generally do not use a veranda so I am not sure how we feel about a ship without Vista's. Anyway, time will tell.

Agreed. We prefer a Vista. I would resent paying the higher fares that seem to obtain on the Muse. What about us paupers? No steerage?

I, too, am surprised at the lack of a casino. My wife likes to play the slots for fun, so no casino is a show-stopper for her. (Viking Ocean's new ships also lack a casino, and she's not interested in trying them.)

But there are many other new-build luxury ships coming out in the next few years to try. We're on the new Regent Explorer in Dec. of next year for Carol's birthday. Seabourn's Encore debuts the same month.

There is such a lack of WOW factor that we are looking at alternative lines. The whole "maiden" voyage is a disappointment. :confused: I liked SS for their LACK of facilities to entice families on board. Wish they would have asked their customers what they wanted to see in a new build instead of looking at what other lines have and trying to gain cross over customers.

Echo Candy's/Spinnaker's thanks to all (and Wellseasoned's Spirit on board report).

 

Also, thanks to Meow for another concise ship/Muse metric analysis with limited Muse data to draw from. We dearly hope the Muse is designed with a wider pathway from the bed to the opposite suite wall.

 

Goodness, we booked voyage 6719 from Montreal to Fort Lauderdale, 14 days, 28 September to 12 October, 2017. Of course, we booked the cheapest classic suite, with 5% Venetian Society discount. It is cancellable until May, 2017, and all we are risking is $200 service charge per booking. However, they do require a 25% deposit. The rules are much hasher now, compared with December 2010, the last time we were on the Silver Spirit.

 

To be fair, now all are verandah suites (no vista suites), and with Venetian discount, it comes to $607 per diem, and if you find a good discount agent, you may get away with $550 per diem. We poor cats have to be as thrift as possible as mice are scarce these years!

 

As for measurements, the Muse's beam is 86ft, the same as what Silversea claimed for the Silver Spirit. Assuming the centre single-aisled corridor, wall thicknesses, etc. are comparable for Muse and Spirit, and the Muse's suite area is 387sqft, 3% larger than the Spirit's 376sqft., the cabin width of the Muse should likewise be 3% (3" to 3.5") wider, and perhaps feel a little less tight, especially without the "make-up module" at the end of the bed. Instead they put something else there, which may or may not be a good idea. Hopefully, they can push the meal trolley through with the slightly increased width. We previously measured the Shadow's cabin width to be 9' 8.5" and the Spirit's cabin width at 9' 4". We expect the Muse's cabin width to be around 9' 7" to 9' 7.5" depending on how they design the cabin.

P.S. The Muse has a passenger to crew ratio of 596/408 = 1.46; the Spirit 540/376 = 1.44

 

The Muse is at 40,700/596 = 68.29 tonnes/passenger; the Spirit at 36,000/540 = 66.66 tonnes per passenger.

 

So the Muse has more overall volume per passenger by 2.5%. These numbers are fairly consistent. Both ships have 8 passenger decks. However, with the same beam width and number of decks, the Muse is only 698 ft. long versus the Spirit's 642 ft. long, or an increase of only 8.7% in length, while 40.700/36,000 or 13% increase in internal volume. How this is achieved remains to be explained.

 

The Muse is marginally faster at 19.8 knots versus the Spirit's 19.5 knots. The speed can decrease somewhat with the ship's age.

Was seriously thinking of booking u til I read about children's room. I'll pass.

 

Yes, I guess most of you are appalled.

 

Additional comments: I am sure Colonel Wes will hate the jogging track, it is the smallest on any Silversea ship.

 

The theatre is so small, and appears single storeyed. Perhaps they figure that few people watch shows or attend lectures anymore.

 

As for the restaurants, we see only La Terrazza and Restaurant 8 (what is it? another name for Le Champagne? ) on deck 6, Hot Rocks on deck 10 and Regina Margherita on Deck 11. Where are the others? Could they be hidden inside the central part of deck 5, now simply labelled as "main bar"? That space looks like a combination making up a quasi-main restaurant rather than a main bar?

 

Is the Connoisseur room the cigar liquor room with special ventilation as on the Shadow?

 

Is deck 4 totally off limits to passengers? Where is the doctor and mandatory clinic?

 

We can hardly tell the quality of the furnishing from the pictures, or the quality and design of the material used. It does still have two TVs, separate tub and shower, walk-in closet, presumably the "make-up" area is now combined with the writing desk. Each regular passenger is given one hour of internet access per day, while the esteemed passengers have unlimited access.

 

Does anyone know anything else?

My memory doesn't record for me exactly when SS decided that they would restrict numbers to Terraza in the evenings to less than the restaurants originally designed capacity ... or indeed how limited it now is. It feels like it has always been that way. The menu in Terraza for evening service isn't tough to prepare or serve and so it does seem that the permanent limiting factor is money saving on a very small number of staff. It begs the question that if they have failed to staff Terraza to capacity for pretty much always then what expectations are they creating for all these new themes and what will they actually genuinely plan to deliver?

 

I have always wondered why SS and it seems it's loyal customers think it right and acceptable for this level of customer to scrap around months in advance to try and book particular restaurants on particular nights without even seeing the menu - partly because they limit numbers to below capacity ... often to only find a level of uncertainty with the booking when they actually board. I therefor find myself wondering how will the expecations and hopes generated by the additional range offered actually be handled, managed and delivered. Most people do not want to be forced to choose and prebook blind and have the stressful bunfight ... but this might take it into a new dimension. Greater choice is a lovely thing as long as it is actually available ... when you want it ... preferably without having to predict months away on what night you might want to eat what style. Will passengers now still be expected to plan and predict and then fight months out with wrestling with even more eating locations choices that they feel compelled to make bookings many months in advance for? More choices for say a seven night cruise? Will thay staff all of them adeqautely every day and for both lunch and dinner? Will there be a set ration of advanced bookings per customers depending on their cruise length? Will they limit seating ... perhaps like Terraza.

 

The deck plan does look lovely, and imho, I'd feel it really attractive without the baggage I have of how SS actually operate extra eating locations. Most first time SS cruisers will presume you simply mooch around and choose where you want to eat when you board perhaps making a booking when you feel like it. It has never been that way. On another line it would look good. But if the continued current processes and restrictions and requirement for advanced but unreliable and uncertain bookings is intended to be carried forward onto Muse then I have misgivings.

 

In addition to those misgivings, I was sort of hoping (optimistically) that Muse would be declared kid-free so I also think the children's room and casino implies a final indicator that it is moving away from it's original base. If the speculation that one or two other ships might be kid free then it would be good for those other ships and would me a move in the right direction. A smaller kid-free ship charging more with higher standards would be my dream. If not, then it isn't a good change.
