Yes everything ! With this major Remastering Cunard are not leaving a stone unturned, even the tenders have been removed and are at the moment being repainted.

Seasoned Cunarders are in for a real treat ;)

As I am aware of, most cabins will not be refurbished. MDR,too.

MDR will get new carpet and possibly new window treatments.

All balcony cabins and suites on decks 8,9,10,11 and 12 will be refurbished. Deck 13 will be all new as well as the new single cabins. All insides plus the outside and balcony cabins on decks 4,5, and 6 will be refurbished over the next year or so.

Overall I would say the majority of cabins will be refurbished after the dry dock is complete.

Some more contractor images - this is what the pods look like after 5 years in the water: aft and forward.

A passenger on the last EB took these image of deck 13 decking ripped up here and here.

Thank you for the links. It looks quite sad with the decking ripped up. It seems hard to believe that everything will be finished by 21st June.

Thanks for that link - it looks like they are adding the shell to contain the deck 13 staterooms.

I can't recall the source at the moment but in one press release it was mentioned that 200 tons of steel are being added to her deck. Payne had once commented that every ton added above the waterline needs two tons below. If those numbers are right she will have porked up by 600 tons when the refit is done.

We have never seen a profile picture of QM2 with this new deck addition during any of this remastering hype..I sure hope it blends in and does not appear like a big box added to her wonderful appearance...Then with all the added weight to the bow will it affect her ride quality?

I found this on line:

I wonder what her GT will be when remeasured?

It doesn't seem to disrupt her beautiful lines too much so that is a good thing.

Will there still be public deck space up top after the re-fit? I always love the ubiquitous QM2 selfies with the ship's name featured!

Yes, there will still be some public "sun deck" space left up on deck 13. The new Britannia Club staterooms on deck 13 will take up about half up the previous sun deck space and the "Sports Centre" courts are being relocated from forward to the aft of that space. See this new deck plan for deck 13 for reference (from the Cruise Critic QM2 Deck Plans pages).

Concerning the large "Queen Mary 2" sign below the funnel, that is best viewed from deck 12. My understanding is that the only changes to deck 12 are related to the kennels expansion. Perhaps the only noticeable changes to the exterior of deck 12 will be the addition of the lamp post and fire hydrant in the dog walking area next to the kennels.

John.

Thanks for the graphic and explanation! I don't know how I mixed up 12 and 13 in regards to the QM2 sign...I'll attribute it to not enough coffee in me at time of typing haha. Glad that there is still some sundeck space up on 13 for those that like it though. It seems as if the new stateroom additions on 13 will not change the appearance of this beautiful ship too much. And the newly added single staterooms on 2 and 3 are in areas that were fairly underutilized before anyway. I am glad I got to sail QM2 in her original design but look forward to sailing her again with the updates.

P.S. I see you are in Iowa! DH had to go to Charles City for about a year and a half for work several years back...some of the friendliest people in the US out in the midwest!

I grew up in Waverly, Iowa which is not too far from Charles City.

I need to make a correction to what I indicated earlier about the changes to deck 12. The "Images" photo gallery is losing its space to the new single staterooms on deck 3. It apparently is being relocated to deck 12 as the "Photo Studio" taking up the space previously occupied by "The Fairways" on the port side. So that's one more change to deck 12 in addition to the kennels expansion.

John.

According to the Deck plans, the new Photo Gallery will be on Deck 2, opposite to the "Golden Lion Pup"; in a space which used to be the entrance to the casino.

The Casino will be reduced in size due to low demand.

The New Photo Gallery takes up less space due to the new digital screens instead of printed Photos.

Thank you for that clarification. The new deck plans do indeed show the "Photo Gallery" on deck 2 opposite the entrance to the Golden Lion Pub. They also show a "Photo Studio" on deck 12 in the space previously occupied by the port side section of "the Fairways".

I can't say I know what the intent is for these two separate "Photo" areas. From a purely business perspective, it seems clear that the functions of viewing and ordering photos are much better served by the higher traffic "Photo Gallery" space on deck 2 rather than the "Photo Studio" space shown on deck 12.

John.

Please note only the most recent versions of the QM2 post-refit deck plans actually show a "Photo Studio" on deck 12. The QM2 deck plans found on Cruise Critic as well as many other sites do not show that change. The deck plans showing a Photo Studio on deck 12 are found here on Cunard's web site.

Well "photo studio" is where they will take your pictures with the gallery probably for viewing /purchasing.. Hopefully this will end all of the formal night photo set ups in the grand lobby!!

Agreed that would be the conventional interpretation of a "photo studio". The logistics just don't seem very workable to me to expect folks in their formal attire to walk through either the Pavilion Pool area or outside on deck 12 in order to have their formal photos taken there. But I'm probably missing something here.

John.

My guess is that since private studio sessions can be booked*, there will be a private studio. Deck 12 seems like a good location - natural light and nearby open space if a natural background is desired (unlike those tacky printed backgrounds).

*"Queen Elizabeth & Queen Mary 2 Private Studio Session

Your favourite photograph from this session will be printed and mounted on stretched 16”x20” canvas...."

Ah, yes -- the private studio photography sessions. That's what I was forgetting. Sounds like a reasonable interpretation for the purpose of the "Photo Studio" to me.

Interesting renderings but not exactly accurate. They are someone's interpretation of what QM2 may have looked like with added cabins.

Some other exterior altercations will be the Bridge Wings which will receive work. They have already been extended once and I'm not sure what this new work will entail. More concerning to me are the scrubbers and additional required exhaust apparatus to support them. These will be added to the funnel structure and funnel base. How they will change the funnel appearance is anyone's guess. On some ships where they have retrofitted the result is disastrous. PONT AVON is a primary example of how not to do it. The Freedom Class of Royal Caribbean is currently receiving them while still in service, but too early to tell how they will be concealed. Right now there are additional fat pipes running outside the existing funnel casing. Anyway I certainly hope it's done right with our beloved QM2 and doesn't alter the appearance too badly. Her funnel is already a bit short and stubby and doesn't need to become even more so.

More contractor deconstruction images. The Elbe 17 drydock has its own social media page in German but it's fan operated and not an official company site.

Removal of the aft pools here, here, and here.

Stacks of plastic piping and one area torn out to the bare walls.

Holy ship!!! That's like looking at Dolly Parton without her makeup and wig!

Do you have specific rooms booked or have you booked guarantee rooms? Cunard say insides and BY categories will be refurbished next year.

Queen Mary 2 will be refurbishing the following grades in 2016 dry dock:

• All Grills Suites

• All Britannia Club balconies on Deck 12

• All Britannia Balconies on Deck 12, Deck 11 and Deck 8

• All Britannia Obstructed Balconies on Deck 8

• BU/BV Grades of Britannia Sheltered balconies on Deck 6

Queen Mary 2 will be refurbishing the following staterooms in service over 2017:

• Remaining BZ/BY Grades of Britannia Sheltered Balconies on Deck 6

• All Britannia sheltered balconies on Deck 4 and Deck 5

• All Britannia Ocean Views

• All Britannia Atrium Views

• All Britannia Insides

I booked a sheltered balcony stateroom 5087 today for the October 11th crossing. Cunard assured me it would be refurbished. Where are you getting your information?

Grabbed a screenshot off the Hamburg harbor cam and cropped this image. Looks like her radar mast is removed. Can't tell from this what is being done to her bridge wings.

The aft end is another story! It looks like the deck 11 Grills Terrace is gone as are the enclosed stairways leading up to them.

I believe the information Ray66 quoted here back in February is an earlier version of the information which is now found here.

When is the ship's next refurbishment?

Of particular note to your concern is that the wording on this page states the remaining staterooms not refurbished during dry dock (including sheltered balconies on deck 5) will be refurbished "before her 2017 World Voyage" rather than "over 2017" as previously stated. Therefore it is possible your sheltered balcony stateroom 5087 could be refurbished prior to the October 11, 2016 crossing.

Regards,

John.
