Question For Casino Cruisers

I don't gamble myself, but I was wondering - do you tip your dealer/croupier after your session is done? Give them some money or a couple of your chips? Always saw this in the movies and wondered if they did it on cruises....

I tip when playing the tables if and only when I HIT....the tip amount depends on the hit. I mostly play Let it Ride, so if I hit for $100.00, In one hand, I'll tip $5. I really don't have a system to my tipping, it just depends on my chip stack. The better I am doing, the better the tip for the dealer....

And no, I do not tip if I loose.

Hope this helps.

I also tip as I play. If I am

hitting a lot then I tip a $5 chip. If I hit a big hand at once, also $5. This is something that is definitely noticed. I've had the pit boss send over free drinks and stuff and it had to be because I was winning and tipping. I think of it as good karma. Also, it helps when the dealer is making it a ton of fun. They deserve the tips. I never count on winning when I play so I would rather give some to the dealer than let the casino take it all back!

Thanks for the information. I just wasn't sure if the "house" frowned on tipping the dealers while you were playing, or are worried that the dealers might be skimming chips. Now I know :)

Every move they make is recorded. Dealers are very cautious anytime they handle chips, exchange money and when given tips from a passenger. They always have to show an open hand to the camera after doing any transaction.

The dealers show the pit bosses the chips/cash when tipped and it gets stacked up.. Also they will show the bosses when cashing in chips.

I also tip when I'm doing well at roulette. Anywhere from a $2 chip up to $10 depending on how well I'm doing.

I was wondering about the tips....I have seen them put the tip on top of the roulette wheel and then they ring their bell, I guess to let the bosses know. But how do they get their tips or are they just divided every night. Doesn't seem fair. DH always tips when he wins. I hope I am not slammed, but I don't see WHY people do this. It is a game of chance and if you win, it has nothing to do with the dealer. I mean, I don't tip the guy who puts gas in my car and he is actually performing a service. DH is a cop and he doesn't get tipped when he goes on a call...okay, there is my mini rant/opinion and I am ready for some slamming! OP, sorry I could not answer your question! And yes, I see all the dealers "clapping" their hands all the time and DH finally explained it is to show the eye in the sky that their hands are empty. :p

Most won't tip the dealer directly, but rather place a bet on their own hand for the dealer. The dealer will help you place your bet in the proper place on the table.

I play blackjack and the dealers can be very entertaining and sometimes helpful. When playing for several hours you can make mistakes and many are good about keeping up with how you play and will pause to ask if you are sure if you do something stupid and that can save you some Money. When I order a drink I will get $10 change in $1 chips to tip the server and if I am enjoying the dealer I will play the rest of the $1 chips as side bets for the dealer. Since the drinks are usually free I consider it a wash and an investment in a new friendship.

Okay, that situation, I can understand tipping. They are helping you out as much as possible. DH plays roulette and if his number comes in (or others at the table) they tip which I can't understand. The casino person isn't doing anything, just spinning the wheel.

I play Craps. I have a betting strategy that makes the dealers work at my bets. For instance, I will make a Place bet (for instance the 6 for $30) and press the bet the first time it hits. Next time it hits, the $60 bet pay $70, so I make them take it back down to $30, taking in the $70 +$30 of the original bet.

Then repeat the process again if it hits again 2x.

It kind of makes them work harder than the average bettor.

Therefore I tip them at the end of the night whether I win or loose. I usually tip 2-3% of my winnings, and give them small change if I loose ($10 or under). They worked for it and deserve it. Besides, it makes you look good to the pit boss and box man and they remember that. I have gotten 4 free cruise offers in 13 cruises and many other perks from the casino during my cruises.

And all tips are shared by that group of dealers for that table, whether it be cards, dice or roulette.

I'll tip as I am playing, but I tip as a bet to the dealers. An occasional $1-2 per hand while playing blackjack and $ pass line, plus odds while playing craps gets noticed and appreciated by the dealers/pit bosses.

Got a nice casino offer for my Breeze cruise because the pit boss noticed me tipping, because I know I didn't spend much time or money in the casino on Inspiration. Ended up getting an aft wrap on breeze for $1100

I do it because I used to be a bartender and that is where I made my money.. I do it for dealers because that is also how they earn AND if they make me losing money fun then they did their job.. I have been known to NOT tip for a really crappy dealer (bad attitudes, no personality, etc...) but I also gamble at many casinos.

Why do you tip cabin stewarts, why waiters. Most of us tip dealers because they are friendly, have added to our good experience and we won a little money, so why not tip a guy who makes practically nothing. You don't have to tip, but when people make our experience a nice one, its nice to reward them with a little extra. However, the tips are all pooled, so the guy you are tipping, does not keep that money, its split between everyone. That is also the way its works in land based casinos as well.

DH plays the tables more than I do (I play slots), but tipping is the right thing to do if you are winning. On a Holland America cruise a couple of years ago, DH played Three Card Poker and had a bet out for the dealer and he hit a straight flush. The dealer's tip alone was over $300 for that hand - she started hyperventilating and the pit boss had to bring her a paper bag to breathe into she was so excited.

As a dealer myself, we make below min. wage..same as waiters...Tips are our source of income. Yes, we deal the game..but we also provide (hopefully) an enjoyable experience..provide excellent service and accurate payoffs...

We learn the different games on our own time, no pay, and it takes a while.

We have to deal with difficult players, both drunk and abusive, and ignorant.

If you want mechanical...play slots..there is no interaction there!

Its the same as going to a restaurant..you are getting service, so it is customary to tip..if you dont want to tip, eat at fast food!

just my $.02...
