Biker19 Posted October 20, 2015 #1 Share Posted October 20, 2015 I've not seen this mentioned in any threads. RCI official statement: On Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015 as Freedom of the Seas was sailing to Port Canaveral, Florida, it spotted a small boat. The ship approached the boat and rescued seven Cuban citizens. The occupants of the boat boarded Freedom of the Seas and received food, water and medical treatment. As part of our standard procedure, the U.S. Coast Guard was notified. A Coast Guard vessel met up with Freedom of the Seas and all seven Cubans were transferred to the U.S. Coast Guard ship. Seems like a lot of of folks watched the "show".
Freedom2014 Posted October 20, 2015 #2 Share Posted October 20, 2015 This happened to me on carnival conquest. The whole process took 6 hours. The captain kept making announcements threw out. They were in a syrofoam boat with a bunch of leaves. We took them on board and waited for coast guard. The ship didn't move while we waited...we were only 2 hours late to the port the next morning. drdoct Posted October 20, 2015 #7 Share Posted October 20, 2015 It made an exciting break in our sea day. They were picked up by the Coast Guard later that night around 6:30pm (during our dessert).
dorisis Posted October 20, 2015 #8 Share Posted October 20, 2015 This used to happen more frequently a few years ago. What is their status in the USA? Are they illegal immigrants or refugees?
Clarea Posted October 20, 2015 #9 Share Posted October 20, 2015 (edited) This used to happen more frequently a few years ago. What is their status in the USA? Are they illegal immigrants or refugees? They never get to the USA. They are repatriated to Cuba by the US Coast Guard. Edited October 20, 2015 by clarea
Rare island lady Posted October 20, 2015 #10 Share Posted October 20, 2015 (edited) This happens more times than you think. Bob is right, they are sent back to Cuba via free boat ride from the Coast Guard. Freedom picked up 8 of them one of the times we were aboard a couple of years ago. Their contraption of a boat was slowing sinking. Freedom crew gave them medical care, food, and water while they waited for the Coast Guard to show up which was only about an hour or so later. Once off loaded onto the Coast Guard cutter, we could see the Cubans then sitting cross legged in a row on the open aft deck of the cutter being closely guarded by one of the coasties before they left.
