Anthem os the Seas @ 4 critical patients

I am on the Anthem right now. There was a rumor that there was a fight between passengers and one of them was one of the ones that were critically injured. Again, it's a rumor but I heard that from a few different passengers on board. A crew member confirmed (about 2 hours ago)that there were 4 critical ill passengers and said that the medical center was closed - to both crew and passengers. We knew something was going on in the Medical center. Now we hear that 2 of them died.

And yes, we did run out of lettuce and bananas!!

From a VERY reliable source, on average there is one death per week on a cruise.

I was on Oasis this past week (just debarked today) and around 10 pm one of the first few evenings, right after the ice show ended, they had the alpha alpha emergency message over the loudspeaker. Turns out someone on deck 8 had a heart attack and died :( So yes it probably does happen more than we think.

i am on the Anthem as well......Maybe the medical centre was closed because of the deaths ? Coroner would have to come in and investigate and everything has to stay the same in suspicious/ unnatural deaths

I'm on the Anthem. There's no reason to panic. If there was a horrible, contagious illness, I'm sure more than 4 people would be ill and there would not currently be a silent dance party. I'm so sad for the families involved. This is a much older sailing than I've ever seen with a full dialysis program and many passengers with difficulty walking. There's nothing nefarious or scary... just a long cruise and unfortunate circumstances. There also wasn't a dramatic change in cruise programming other than the casinos and shops closing at 730, which was announced at noon. There hasn't been any extreme cleaning; i.e., no contagious illnesses. I imagine the decision to not airlift/dock elsewhere was because there were multiple patients and the ship was able to sail into NJ with similar timing and less risk.

This is even more confusing. Why on earth would a medical center be closed on a ship filled with 4000+ people? I'm really not liking this. I have an uneasy feeling...

Yes that could be. Just thought it was odd that they closed the Medical center after they announced that 4 people were critically ill.

I'm sure they've got their hands full right now. They certainly don't need people wandering in there for Dramamine, an aspirin, or a band aid.

Keep in mind that Anthem is the size of a small city. We used to live in a town that had about that same population. Was it possible to have 4 unrelated critical medical situations in that town at the same time? Absolutely! Still, I feel badly for the folks affected by this course of events.

Exactly right, no conspiracy here. The beds were full, the staff was busy trying to keep the 4 patients alive, there was no need to divert staff to routine medical issues. If someone else had an serious medical emergency, that would have been dealt with. They closed "clinic hours". This is a case where the medical center was in code red, nearing code black, where there are more patients than staff to deal with it.

I believe the previous poster - the one who is on the ship - meant that due to the 4 critical passengers the medical center was closed. Nothing more fishy than in all likelihood 4 critical most likely puts a ship medical center at Code Black - the point at which the number and needs of patients exceeds the resources available.

Happens to land-based emergency rooms also. They hit a point where they close to all incoming patients and those who are en route are re-routed to another ER. Only on a ship there's nowhere else to go

The "uneasy feeling" you keep talking about is actually why the word "panic" has been used regarding your posts. You immediately jumped to "I hope this won't affect my cruise" when nothing indicated that it would.

I believe this is one of the dialysis at sea cruises.

Is this for real? "Dialysis At Sea"? .. Like a theme cruise?

If so, maybe this isn't the best idea in the future .. considering all the trouble it caused . Maybe ship-board dialysis isn't as good an idea as it sounds (and also might be the reason RC made the captain gun it full speed back to Bayonne) ... hmmmm still say this is all fishy ... and I see lawyers waiting on the pier too ... not just the paramedics.

Whats next? "Chemotherapy At Sea"? Bad idea.

No it is NOT a theme cruise!

Royal has certain cruises which have the facility for patients on dialysis. It is contracted out to a company called Dialysis at Sea. This is one of the cruises, among many, that they were providing that. They have been doing this very successfully over the years. Kudos to Royal and the company.

It is very unfair to assume that they caused the emergency. There is nothing fishy about the situation.

I just got back from the Allure and I am a dialysis patient who received dialysis there. I had absolutely no problems and there were two empty machines at all times. My next trip is on the Anthem and now I'm really concerned. No one is sure it was a problem with dialysis patients. Making a statement like that is not right. Dialysis patients have a right to go on cruises too.:p

People please. I have never seen so much speculation in my life. Four are/were ill. That is all we know.

Thank you! I've seen a lot of ridiculous threads here on CC, but this is one of the most absurd. Even the people who were on the ship don't know. If you're on the next cruise and it wasn't going to sail, you would know by now. People get sick and even die on cruises. It's sad, but it happens.

Really? That's your take? If you don't know about the program, maybe you should keep your opinion to yourself. Be thankful you don't need either dialysis or chemo.

It's not a theme cruise. You can do "dialysis at sea" for one patient. This is a service where you pay extra to have the equipment and additional medical personnel onboard. It makes sense if they can combine more than one patient on any cruise. This gives people who need dialysis a chance to enjoy something that you who have better health get to enjoy. The cruise line has agreed to accept the program, so there isn't any real legal problem, its been worked out years ago when the program started.

Further, there is no indication that the illnesses were from the dialysis group.

I totally agree. It was quite ruthless.

We know a couple on board in that program on the current cruise. They reported that all is OK with them. We have cruised with the couple before on the Explorer and they reported a fantastic DOS facility and care.

You should not be concerned with people's speculation. Enjoy your Anthem cruise. You will be in good hands.

Thank you Cheng. Thanks for the back up from one of the best authorities.

I paid a pretty penny to get dialysis on the cruise, I see some postings here and I know why our world is in the shape it is. If anyone knows anything more, I would appreciate your posting it. No speculation please, just facts. Unless you're living it, you have no idea the isolation we suffer as dialysis patients. We have a right to have fun too. I'm sure the illness you speak of has nothing to do with dialysis.

Not everyone on dialysis is elderly so the jokes are invalid actually. Prayers for the family of the 2 that passed away and hopes for the best recovery of the other 2. Kudos to Royal for handling the situation correctly.
