New mattresses on the Freedom absolutely hard as a rock!

Recommended Posts

Just back yesterday from FOS and I'm still aching from the bed. We were in a suite and were told by our room steward's boss that they no longer have pads for ANY beds. Steward tried to pad with duvets and I was able to sleep, but ached all week! Going on FOS again in Nov. with 10 family members that have never cruised, thinking of bringing lots of air mattresses!

Like others have said, we don't get off in port anymore since we've been to the same ones so many times, we just enjoy the ship. But we're really getting disillusioned with RCCL for a lot of reasons. Service people are always great, but food has gone drastically down hill, seems they just want you to buy specialty foods. WJ had Mexican tacos, baked pasta and spaghetti for lunch 3 days in a row, really?!? We'd kill for a real dessert that wasn't made with pudding and actually had some flavor.

We travel on them every year for our anniversary and they always acknowledge it in some way, except for this year! Although it showed on their website, it was totally ignored. We don't do specialty restaurants, but had a freebie so we decided to try their new Mexican restaurant "Sabor" for anniversary. Food was just plain awful, I had what was supposed to be burritos but looked more like 2 small cigars and tasted like it too. DH had fish that had such a fishy smell he could hardly eat it, went straight to room after and he was sick and throwing up within an hour.

Think it's time to take some short cruises with someone else till we find a new line!

Sorry for your bad experience. We were on Freedom last week and the bed was just fine. It was firm but not overly so for our taste. Slept great. We had a great dinner at Sabor on the last night. Table side guacamole was so good, we had two orders. We had chicken and shrimp dishes which all tasted and smelled great. Would highly recommend.

We got off Sunday as well. We requested a topper a week or so before, got a message acknowledging the request and the toppers were on our beds when we boarded. They were super comfy - would have slept great if we weren't next to a service entrance.

What bothers me is after paying for a nice relaxing vacation, sleeping in a comfortable bed, should be a no brainier. If RCCL chooses to ignore complaints about the lousy uncomfortable beds, let's sail on Celebrity. Princess who adheres to our desires. We are the paying guests,

Just returned from Freedom of the Seas, April 10th sailing. Our bed in hump balcony cabin 7638 had an egg crate pad on the mattress (which we did not request in advance) and was fine. We had great service from all staff and enjoyed the food.

That cabin is a JS.

Hello, I am live from the freedom of the seas. Also a loyal rcl cruiser with 400 points after the completion of this cruise. One of the things I have always enjoyed on royal are the comfortable beds. This time, i sat down on our bed and honestly it was like sitting on a board. What? I thought they must have forgotten the egg crate or the mattress topper. Asked my room steward and she said they have no more egg crates or mattress toppers, and we had a brand new mattress. Ok. But i can't sleep on a board! She said she would get the housekeeping supervisor to fix it. I also called guest services and asked for a replacement. Of course, they said. No replacement. After the 3rd call, no replacement. No one called to see if the issue had been resolved, at least not yet and we are on day 4. Not the kind of service one would expect.

On a brighter note, my room steward has done everything in her power to make the bed more comfortable, and after adding several thick duvets, the bed is at least tolerable.

I did speak to the hotel director to give some constructive feedback. He was unapologetic, and said that he had noted hundreds of complaints about the hard beds, and he would send them to his superiors. He also confirmed that these mattresses will be replacing the old comfy ones fleetwide on shops that are 10 years or older, and that the egg crates and mattress toppers have been discarded due to sanitary reasons.

Maybe it's just me, but I am not too happy about this change, and would love to hear from others who also got to experience first hand the new mattresses. Apparently not all of the mattresses have been replaced, but they are phasing them in. So you have been forewarned.

Interesting that the hotel director on one ship had already gotten hundreds of complaints. And this thread is from Dec 2015.

Hi oneluckycruiser:

Sorry to hear about the bed problems as we are sailing December 18th on FOS.

I remember years ago, similar situations with cabin problems that were unresolved by staff and management. The couple were at the service deck and told the desk staff if the situation was not fixed, they would sleep in their PJ's etc, in the main lobby, and they were early sleepers.. Apparently nothing was resolved, so, one evening, the couple, in the mid 60's, came down to the lobby sofa in their PJ's.robe etc. and proceeded to get set for bed. The staff saw what was happening, and, along with security detail escorted them away. We found out, that they were given a junior suite that night. so, if similar problems with the mattress occurs, take things into your own hands, nicely, and see if the RCCL staff will fix the problem,

Good luck to all

Returned from Freedom beginning of October. We thought the beds were comfortable!

No worries...they likely were comfy.

There are a couple of threads on this topic now (mattresses), and what is clear is that some folks like firm mattresses and some don't.

There are even a few cases where on the same ship and the same cabin...recent cruisers indicated a mattress was "firm" while another said it wasn't...so...like many other topics...you'll not see agreement - comes down to personal preference, and you can't satisfy everyone.

Glad you enjoyed your cruise and comfy bed. Most people do.

There is no charge for mattress toppers, our bed last week on FOS cabin 7315 had one topper already on the bed (without us requesting it) but no matter the extra topper on the bed ours was the hardest mattress that I have ever slept on. It was like sleeping on hardwood floors, very uncomfortable. Luckily for us our days were long and our sleep time was always very late after midnight so we didn't have time to duele on this and falling as sleep on that piece of "plywood" at 2AM was quick.

Liberty was like that when we were on in September. There was a mattress topper, but it was like sleeping on a board. There was no sinking in at all. It truly was like sleeping on a hardwood floor, I agree with you. :(

I don't know what your mattress is like at home, but ours at least has some sort of "cush" or softness to it. The one on Liberty was like sleeping on the box spring instead of a mattress. New experience in our cruise vacations.

This best describes my experience on our last 2 cruises.

When people use terms like rock, concrete, plywood, etc.. they lose credibility. The mattress may be firm, but lay down on the floor next to it and tell me they are the same. ;)

Maybe you just have not experience it and it's hard for you to believe (or you just like to troll) but many are stating the same. On my previous cruises and two on them in the same ship, FOS, that was not the case.

There are many describing their bed experiences with similar results and actsolutely no reason to lie. For those people beds were way beyond firm, no give, like sleeping on floors. I believe it because I experienced it.
