IRL_Joanie Posted January 15, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 15, 2016 Oh Oh....... For those of us who might discover we've forgotten to pack something we cannot do without while on an Alaska Cruise and think they'll pick it up at the Walmart Super Center in Juneau (since its cheaper there than a regular store in Alaska) ....THINK AGAIN!!! Announced today is a complete list of all 269 Walmart and affiliated stores being closed and Juneau is on the list. It will close its doors on 5 February 2016. I am posting this here only because I know of quite a few members of Cruise Critic who have made use of this store specifically. Joanie
SilvertoGold Posted January 15, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 15, 2016 Thanks, Joanie. The crew will be affected hugely by this. Their port for shopping and that is where they used to go!
Donny-Joe Posted January 15, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 15, 2016 Looks like there's a Fred Meyer in Juneau still, which should be just as good for food, and pretty close for everything else. It's further from the port, though.

It's further from the port, though. Freddie's is minimally further than Wal Mart. I haven't noticed if they have a shuttle, but that would be smart! The public bus stops downtown right near the cruise ships and stops right on the side of Freddie's. I like them better than Wal Mart anyway :)
Rare arctickitty Posted January 16, 2016 #8 Share Posted January 16, 2016 The Fred Meyer in Juneau is one of the nicest in Alaska IMHO. At first I was surprised to hear that Wal-Mart was closing in Juneau but the town leans blue.

CowPrincess Posted January 16, 2016 #10 Share Posted January 16, 2016 A loss to cruisers, a loss to the crew, and a much bigger loss to the employees and residents :( We were in Juneau the first year the Wal Mart was open, and many of the locals were very excited to have a Wal Mart. Unless you live someplace that is somewhat isolated, you cannot understand how much a major store such as a Wal Mart can help day to day life. donaldsc Posted January 16, 2016 #11 Share Posted January 16, 2016 There is also a Costco in Juneau although this will not help cruise passengers who do not want to buy stuff in bulk quantities. The locals will be able to manage with Fred Meyers and Costco however. DON
DougH Posted January 16, 2016 #12 Share Posted January 16, 2016 Kind of surprised to hear of the closing but the Fred Meyer is still a pretty good option. Juneau lost their Kmart a number of years ago so I guess it really isn't a very good retail market.
ozark74 Posted January 17, 2016 #13 Share Posted January 17, 2016 Not that big or a deal Walmart is bad news anyway. They are bad for everyone. Bad quality real junk.
Northern Aurora Posted January 17, 2016 #14 Share Posted January 17, 2016 Recently there have been some articles in the Alaska media regarding the impact of Amazon on some of our in-state stores. Walmart press releases have admitted difficulty competing with Amazon in some markets, and Juneau may well be one of them.
sherryf Posted January 17, 2016 #15 Share Posted January 17, 2016 It's no big loss. I'd rather go to Fred Meyer any day. In fact, I've been to the FM in Juneau, but never the Walmart. I avoid Walmart as much as possible.
