If you've been thinking about traveling to warmer climates or have been catching a few news stories, you may have heard about something called the ‪#‎Zika‬ virus -- a disease spread primarily through mosquito bites. Get the facts.

Just received two "emergency" notifications by email regarding our upcoming Ruby Mexico 10 day in March.

Gist was CDC had upgraded warning on January 15 (not so timely in contacting passengers?). "Most symptoms mild and last 2-7 days. Pregnant women more at risk. Wear long sleeves and repellants. Continue monitoring CDC."

Suspect this will get bigger for cruise lines.

What is Princess doing about the Zika virus? Are they providing protection? Do we need to bring protection?

We will be travelling this coming week to an area that is questionable. I do not expect Princess to "DO" anything. I did contact the tour operator which will be taking our group into jungle type area. I was informed there are no cases known in that area at this time. She also reminded us to have repellent with us and on us. My I suggest if your travelling to such areas contact tour operators.

A quick search found 3 threads from the past few days....

Princess is not required to do anything except what they are doing with notifications.

I thought about taking an aerosol spray with deet, but we can't fly with aerosol cans. Does anyone know of a liquid bug spray that can be packed (preferably with deet?) Thanks.

OFF makes a pump spray with DEET, as do other manufacturers....easy to find

You can fly with aerosol cans in your checked baggage, so you can bring a can of bug spray.

Unless you are pregnant, or expecting to become pregnant, Zika is no more of a problem than any other mosquito bite.

About 1 in 5 people infected with Zika will get sick (from the CDC). From that statement it seems that all five are infected and are carriers, but only one will feel sick. Mosquitoes become infected when they bite a person already infected with the virus. (CDC). So all five people can pass it on by getting bit by a mosquito and that mosquito bitting someone else. There fore, I believe it is more than other other mosquito bite especial for pregnant or expecting to be with child..

Sure - you can fly with an aerosol can - same as hairspray, etc., as long as in your checked bag.

Avon Skin So Soft seems to work as bug repellent without the Deet?

No, no ,no!! If you want to be safe, use a repellant with DEET! Skin-So-Soft has been proven to be mostly ineffective. I bring little pump bottle of Ben's with DEET. A tiny amount is all that is necessary and is very effective.

We used deet towelettes for our Costa Maya excursion to Mayan ruins in November. The come in individually-wrapped foil packets and are very easy to pack and apply. Can't remember if we bought then at Walmart or REI but both carry bug-towelettes.
