Cruise2End Posted January 31, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 31, 2016 Is there a website that shows the actual ship location (port location)? We are planning a Mediterranean cruise, and we have cruised enough to know that Princess often docks in container ports that are near nothing. When trying to plan shore excursions it would be nice to know exactly how far away you are from destination sites to determine travel times. For example we docked at Le Havre and our 8 hour tour to Paris was spent mostly on a bus 🙂. Any help would be appreciated.

skynight Posted January 31, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 31, 2016 The actual port is almost always shown in the itinerary when the port is different from the advertised city. You can view port locations by going to google maps and searching for the port name. You can also determine how far a port is from the city by searching the tour section and looking at the tour details. They detail how long the bus rides are. This is all part of your pre-cruise research.
shredie Posted January 31, 2016 #4 Share Posted January 31, 2016 If the city is inland, the port will be somewhere a distance away. A glance at a map should give some idea of which ports will be something other than the city itself. Some place just don't work for cruising passengers, IMO, like Paris and Rome. Cruise2End Posted February 4, 2016 Author #5 Share Posted February 4, 2016 This would be a Mediterranean cruise, so I guess I'll just check maps for each - thought there might be a website. Thanks!

It sort of sounds like you think Princess docks in the boonies while all the other cruise lines dock in the middle of town...which of course isn't true. Le Havre is the closest port to Paris. For Rome, Princess docks at Civittavecchia, with all the other cruise lines, the closest port to Rome. Unfortunately it is an hour plus away from Rome. Princess docks where it is told to, just like all the other cruise lines. Edited February 4, 2016 by CruiserBruce
GUT2407 Posted February 4, 2016 #9 Share Posted February 4, 2016 I do agree that it would assist if Princess actually published the address of each dock.
Astro Flyer Posted February 4, 2016 #10 Share Posted February 4, 2016 I do agree that it would assist if Princess actually published the address of each dock. The do provide the address & port information for ports at the beginning & end of a cruise and Tom's port guides gave me more info about our ports of call. colonialinnkeeper Posted February 4, 2016 #12 Share Posted February 4, 2016 It is sometimes helpful to have a plan of the port area ahead of time to see how far it is to walk out and where taxis and buses are.
ExDean Posted February 4, 2016 #13 Share Posted February 4, 2016 Tom's Port Guides will give you port layout, surrounding area with very detailed maps and virtual guides. Tom's detail is awesome. Go to his web site and many of one'sport questions will be answered.
Rare Keith1010 Posted February 5, 2016 #14 Share Posted February 5, 2016 In most cases the port is very straight forward from the itinerary. There are just a few exceptions to this in the Mediterranean and largely that has to do with size of ships rather than cruise line. Keith
