Traveler's Checks

Recommended Posts

I know Traveler's checks aren't used that much anymore, but can you cash them on the ship? I don't want to carry much money with me, but want it available when needed. If the ship does accept them, where do you cash them? Thanks!!

I just cashed some on the Silhouette in December. This was at the front desk. I think you can cash them at the casino also.
RCI won't cash them at the casino anymore. The last 3 sailings, and the casino redirected me to guest services.

We definitely still use them on our trips...our credit union does not charge to get them so I feel better using them to avoid any ATM fees for cash, especially since I'd rather not carry over $1000 in cash initially to pay for our excursions, etc..I have never had an issue cashing them at guest services except last trip, when I got a phone call the next day after cashing some, when they said my signature on one of the checks was not close enough of a match to the preliminary signature for their security person, so I had to return and simply resign it again...darn my poor penmanship, but kudos to them for making sure ..

Hmm, I thought ATM's killed the Traveler's Check. I guess you can still buy them. I've not bought them since I had a debit card - ATMs are (mostly)everywhere.

Not everyone uses an ATM or debit card. Never had a debit card and I got rid of my ATM card 30 years ago. I've never missed it and I travel all over the world, but I don't use much cash - I pay for everything with credit cards for convenience and points.

I used TC's on my cruise last March. I only needed cash for tips and in the casino. I had no problem cashing them at Guest Services for no charge. The ATM's cost you a lot, both on the ship and by your bank. TC's are free. And you don't have to carry a lot of cash around. Think they are great!

I use credit card for everything too, but that's not what I was talking about. The OP was talking about access to cash.
