Rare cruisn71 Posted February 6, 2016 #1 Share Posted February 6, 2016 Has anyone taken fortified wines like port on as their free carry on bottle for in room consumption? Would be nice for a night cap.

jtl513 Posted February 6, 2016 #3 Share Posted February 6, 2016 Most likely Port would not be allowed, but it may depend on the security person on duty at the time. I was once allowed to bring on limoncello when I jokingly said it was "lemon wine"! ;)
detroit70 Posted February 8, 2016 #4 Share Posted February 8, 2016 We took Vermouth (fortified wine) on board a couple or three times and it was only questioned once by a very young staff member who, when I said it was a form of wine, said she'd probably get fired but she'd let me go on board with it. On my last cruise in January from Fort Lauderdale, I decided not to bother with the vermouth, but I did carry a bottle of wine on in my carryon bag. No one in the terminal could tell me where I was supposed to check it in and, when I put it through the xray machine in my backpack as I boarded the ship, no one said anything. Made me wonder what would have happened if I'd had a couple or three bottles.
sail7seas Posted February 8, 2016 #5 Share Posted February 8, 2016 I would expect that would be confiscated when you board.
OceanTraveller4ever Posted February 8, 2016 #6 Share Posted February 8, 2016 Very funny. This is like water bottles filled with vodka. After spending thousands on a cruise, I just bring on a bottle of wine, and not worry if there is more kick to it. I do like some arrangements with drink servers for a better drink, but I cannot divulge that anymore :(
Rare POA1 Posted February 8, 2016 #7 Share Posted February 8, 2016 You're not allowed to take port or other fortified wine. I've taken a bottle of Ramos-Pinto 30 year old tawny port as part of two cases we checked last year, but we paid corkage on all 24 bottles. Perhaps they let it slide because we were paying over $400 in corkage, or maybe it wasn't as noticeable amongst its 23 "friends." I wouldn't try it as my one free bottle, though. Cruzin Terri Posted February 8, 2016 #8 Share Posted February 8, 2016 My DH and I brought on two bottles of dry sherry and no one blinked an eye. Terri
freestyling Posted February 8, 2016 #9 Share Posted February 8, 2016 I've been tempted to bring my favorite "rice wine" sake but have not done so as of yet.
Blue Mudshark Posted February 8, 2016 #10 Share Posted February 8, 2016 Straight wine only. Not Port. The published rules say wine is allowed. Port is wine. The rules don't specifically prohibit Port. Is there a rule against Port, and if so, where is it?

Is there a rule against Port, and if so, where is it? Certainly it's not written anywhere, and pretty much up to the security person on duty at the time. On our Eurodam cruise last Nov from FLL terminal 26 I did not even see anybody who would collect corkage on wine or bottles of contraband!
taxmantoo Posted February 8, 2016 #12 Share Posted February 8, 2016 We have brought port on most of our cruises without ever being questioned. We always count it as our corkage "free" bottle for in-room consumption. We have even shared one of our bottles of port with a cellar master in the Pinnacle Grill (after hours ...) with a nice plate of cheese.
Rare Tom O. Posted February 8, 2016 #13 Share Posted February 8, 2016 (edited) Quick question: Does HAL sell Port or Sherry by the glass in the dining rooms? After reading this thread I was thinking of having a glass as part of dessert on my next cruise. When they take beverage orders at the beginning of the meal, will it be a problem if I ask them to bring it with dessert? Edited February 8, 2016 by Tom O. Or you can get it in the Explorer's Lounge while listening to the Adagio duo. :) Edited February 8, 2016 by jtl513

My late DH used to enjoy a glass of port sometimes but was usually disappointed with what HAL offered. Rare Vict0riann Posted February 9, 2016 #16 Share Posted February 9, 2016 And in the Pinnacle Grill they have a lovely late season sauvignon blanc, I think it is, that is a wonderful after-dinner drink! I'm planning to invest in a whole bottle next cruise.:)
