Peace and quiet

Sure...you'll have to scope out the ship, but there will be "quiet" areas that aren't teeming with people! Those places will vary due to time of day, weather, passenger mix, etc....you simply will have to wander about until you find a spot you like! Obviously, the pool decks will NOT be quiet! But, the promenade deck usually has few folks being noisy....you might not be alone, but you won't be disturbed.

At night, your balcony (if you have one) will be the place to star-gaze....or some of the upper decks...windy, but quiet!

Welcome!

Some ships, Carnival for one, have adult only areas with no kids, no smoking of any kind. Carnival's are the Serenity deck but depending on the ship, some Serenity areas can be noisy with Lido deck activities below the deck. In that case just go to the very front of the Serenity deck. Carnival has a pool and/or hot tubs here- with NO kids!

On Princess you must pay to use the adult only deck!

You can usually find quiet areas on all the ships especially in the bow (front) or stern (back) of the ship.

Stargazing is problematic unless they have a spot without any ambient lighting. Helo deck is often a good spot.

Typically this is the bow area and as such is kept dark in order to not wreck night vision of bridge officers above. My go to spot (when allowed) for sky watching at night - not just for stars but especially for satellites and the occasional meteorite. Access varies by ship and policies.

Check deck plans for the particular ship. There are usually some odd places that are not obvious - sometimes an open deck area between sections of balconies. Best to ask about the ship on the forum for the particular cruiseline.

Having never cruised and being one who enjoys watching the waves, sky and stars: Is there time and place to sit on deck and draw, read or just watch the waves?

Hi there

Welcome to cruise critic

If you go to the upper decks at sunrise or sunset there will be few people to be seen. If you wait till the stars are out, you might find yourself alone.

During the day of course there will be more people about, but if you are really trying to find a secluded place, it isn't that hard.

have a great cruise

Yes, I've been able to do that on every ship we've cruised on and we rarely have our own balcony.

If nowhere else the library is usually available and quiet. I've also been able to find a bar lounge chair in a quiet area near a window. And one end of the buffet, outside of meal hours, is often an option.

So far (3 cruises, 2 booked) we've never had a balcony, but most of our cruising involves sitting somewhere on a deck watching the ocean go by. I find the majority of people are interested in activities, which tend to be concentrated in various areas, and you can always find a quiet spot somewhere away from the crowd. When cruisers tell you that you can do as much or as little as you want to, it's true!

Yes, and you will have more luck finding a place like that if you are on longer cruises, smaller ships, or more luxury lines. Shorter cruises tend to attract more children and partiers than longer (>10-14 days) ones. Smaller ships tend not to have as much of a playground atmosphere, and tend to be an older crowd, and luxury lines are not only less of a playground, they don't have the (financial) need to fill up every bit of space with cabins, activities, and revenue-earning areas - they are more likely to have more places for simple, quiet relaxation.

We have never had a problem finding quiet places to read during the day and to watch the waves at night. Your best bet is if you are on a ship with a promenade deck. Might be more of a problem on some of the newer mega ships.

We have always taken an inside cabin because we have never had a problem finding quiet places.
