Lanyards...Yes or No?

I had to look up the RackTrap - it is brilliant!! I need to buy one!

I never wear a lanyard, see no need to do so. I either have my purse/daypack with me and it goes in there, or I have a pocket on my shorts that wear if I'm going to the pool. If I were a lanyard person, I would absolutely NOT wear it off the ship! That is like putting a big old target on yourself to let all the pickpockets and scam artists know that you are a naive tourist and ripe for the picking...

I use a lanyard during the day for convenience but I never wear one after I change for dinner. The card goes in my little evening purse at that point. I have a collection of lanyards which were made in various colours for me by a cruising friend.

I know there are those who hate lanyards but it is a matter of personal choice whether to use one or not.

A brilliant contraption if you have a Rack.....which some of us don't! If there is a think tank team working on one for the backside.....I'm there.;)

If you need more "rack", I have enough extra that I am willing to donate ;) And, I did not pay some plastic surgeon for mine, Mother Nature gave them to me...

With or without a lanyard I look like a tourist. Might be the camera or the guidebook or the confused look. So OK , I will probably never blend in like a local. But I'm not a complete idiot. The lanyard may be hanging from my neck but my money is tucked discreetly somewhere else.

I have pockets, so I use those. However, I have a swim lanyard--one of the waterproof pouches--that I put keys, cards, and money in when I travel and am around water. I'm not inclined to leave my room card on a chair while I swim, so I bring it in with me.

When we sailed the Allure this August they had a Kiosk after you got your picture standing in front of the ship that you can purchase a lanyard.

 

We bought the ones on sale, last years lanyards.

Had to pay with a credit card, since it was on land could not charge on your sea pass:eek:

They punched the hole in the sea pass right there.

 

Safely around my neck I placed it.

 

Used it on board around my neck when not in the DH pocket.

 

Never wore it at the ports.

 

Just what we do (8 cruises later)

I am a person who loses things. I mean, it's almost as if I have some magical force that makes things disappear. One minute, I will be holding something, the next minute it will be gone. It even confuses my organized husband. He will say, "you just had it!! Where did it go??" On vacations, he always holds my passport and hands it to the security guard for me. If not, I would have lost it years ago.

SO, I vote yes to the lanyard! Thanks to my lanyard, I've never lost my Seapass card. Did you know they will punch a hole into your card to connect to the lanyard? I get them to punch the hole in mine because if it was just in a plastic sleeve, it would probably slip out.

When I'm in port, I attach the lanyard to the inside of my vacation vault, which is hidden in my beach bag. I don't wear it around my neck in port.

Never said you wouldn't look like a tourist. Never said you need to blend in like a local. You need to be and look smart to separate yourself from the herd of tourists you are around. A group of tourists off of a cruise ship is a target-rich environment for petty thieves. The lanyard, the confused look, the looking at that guidebook out in open - all are signaling to those little felons. Doesn't matter that your money is tucked away - you are carrying a camera, you are carrying some sort of bag. Are you willing to be relieved of these? Easy pickings... Be discreet, look like you know what you are doing and going (even if you aren't/don't). duck into a store or someplace private to look at that guidebook. Don't have any advertising that announces you are off the ship - no lanyard, no logo'd T-shirt or bag. Lessens the odds...

All good points Slidergirl. I guess I have never been anywhere where I felt that vulnerable. Most crowded city I ever visited (other than LA) was London. I am sure I stuck out like a tourist, along with about 2 million other tourists that were wandering around town checking out the sights.

 

On my last cruise the last stop was Victoria BC. There were 3 ships in port. Everyone I saw looked like they just stepped off a cruise ship, probably because they did.

 

I do take some precautions to mitigate the risk of pickpockets. I'm not quite the ditzy tourist I may appear. Still could get robbed. Or not. Either way, that lanyard around my neck will likely have nothing to do with it.

We do similar. Lanyard on the ship. Attached internally to our shore bag. Easy to find.

I get a coil one from the Casino. At times I'll get rid of the coil and simply use the clip to attach to a belt loop, then tucked into a pocket. Not all women's clothes have belt loops or pockets.

The lanyard is also the place where I attach my flashlight. Do not want to be without one if/when the power goes out.

Dependant upon the region you are visiting......you could never not look like a tourist simply by being blonde or a redhead...no way around it.

Simply by having an appropriate bag which zippers.......no expensive jewelry that stands out.....no camera strapped around your neck......no outside pockets but inside pockets.

Keeping yourself away from crowds. If native strangers come.close to.talk including children

that is a ploy so move away.

Neither of us have ever used a lanyard and have no intention of ever using them.

We just put our ID cards in a pocket.

JMO -- wearing a lanyard ashore certainly points out to the locals that you are tourist.

 

I just wear my lanyard around the ship and as soon as we step ashore it goes into my purse.
