OK, sounds logical but I guess I don't understand what or how the Photopass system works?

How can an individual photo shot by a photographer be linked to me?

I'm missing something.

It would be linked the the medallion ID

Which is linked to you

Retinal scans are being used by everyone today. Even my simple computer has the ability to pull down photo's based on it.

How else could the numerous photo's being shot be linked back to any individual without it? The photograph's are certainly not going to keep track of people as they shoot pictures.

Me thinks you're mixing up retinal scanning with facial recognition.

...The Ocean Medallion will speed up embarkation as travel documentation will be added to the guest profile in advance along with other preferences provided by guests ahead of time...

Aren't most of us already entering this info online ahead of our departures anyway? Or am I missing something ?

I'm kind of hoping that the info entered can be at a more granular level. I will always want my Bloody Mary to be extra spicy. If I can have every bartender know that in advance I won't have to bother ordering it that way. The ability to enter your food allergies into the system so that every chef and every server knows in advance that you have special needs "should" mean that you don't have to meet up with the head waiter in advance to make this clear. We all know that the current system isn't working well as far as entering info in advance. Having it linked to a medallion that you are carrying with you should be able to alert all concerned right then and there in the dining venue.

There must be others who have some sort of specialized preferences they would like to enter so that they are readily seen by anybody who checks their device. I'm not afraid of disclosing my information in regard to these things.

I agree that much of the info that one will enter into the medallion system in advance is already info we enter when booking, etc. That's one of the reasons I don't understand the panic which, I am guessing, is also what you are saying. It's no big deal.

I think many are assuming that the medallions will function like tracking devices (OnStar, etc.) in many cars. It now appears they are not this sophisticated. Of course with cameras everywhere, and facial recognition getting better and cheaper, this info will soon (if not already) be recorded even if you leave your medallion in the cabin.

re facial recognition - the casinos have been using it quite successfully for years. It is not particularly new technology. As others have said, the medallion is purely a key to your data held in a database (just like your key card). This data should be encrypted.

I suspect that this will be used as the opportunity to update/rewrite the back-end system to incorporate these new twiddly bits. The medallion is only the front-facing customer bit - the heavy lifting is all done in the back-end systems.

Because this is the Princess board, and any innovation or change be it technology, new menu items, specialty restaurants, dining options, status program, new for pay options, no matter how minutia freeks the bejabers out of this board.

I just hope it works better than Princess @ Sea. I had a terrible time with the app on our cruise last week. Last year, I had a Windows phone and the app didn't work on it, but now I have an Android phone, and I constantly lost connection. Great idea, but doesn't work well.

This makes sense but probably not practical. For one, the bartender usually makes the drink before scanning the card/medallion to pay for it so they won't see any personal info. As far as allergies, that would require a scanner at every table to pinpoint where you are exactly (which is what Disney does at Be our guest), and I don't think they will invest to that level.

Now, for ordering via phone/tablet that could work (store your recent orders for reorder)

Otherwise that information could be collected at the folio level now if they wanted, no medallion required. This is what RCCL and NCL do for dining now, they swipe a card from your party at dining entry and all of that comes up on a slip given to the server. (This could be done as part of the medallion upgrade but doesn't need the medallion to work)

Good luck leaving it in the cabin. It would be like leaving your cruise card in the cabin. No way to get back inside without assistance.

Have used my I Pad mini on numerous cruises and never had a problem with Princess @ Sea.

I just though of another great use for the Medallions.

They could have it linked to the washers & dryers to let you know when your load is finished. All they would need is one for the whole laundry room to enter your machine number & code. No more laundry left in a machine when people are waiting to use it. It could be timed to send out an alarm 5 minuter before it finishes.

To what device would they send the alert? The medallion can't receive an alert. The system could know you were there in the laundry room but you can't enter a code that you don't know and will never know. The identifier in the medallion is almost certainly a lengthy hexadecimal number. Even if that number was available to you it would be necessary for almost everybody to write it down in order to remember it which would render much of the security a moot point.

You're right. Couldn't they tie it to a smart phone somehow?

Also about the id code, I saw that you can locate another person using their screens. I assumed that you would have to have their Medallion code to enter it somehow or is that idea also a pipe dream.

On second thought, they could send a signal out right now using Princess@sea for a text message but I suppose it just not worth the trouble.

I agree, FL, a message could be sent to the passenger's Smart Phone or tablet, but it would require an upgrade to the laundry washer and dryer systems that would seem a bit of overkill.

Regarding the locating of passengers, I don't think they would require each other's medallion's "code." The way I would do it is in the set up routine when the medallion is mailed to the passenger's home, there would be mutual entries made by passengers who want to give others the capability. So, I would make an entry saying that it is OK for Mrs. XBGuy to track me, and she would make a similar entry for her profile. Since I don't regularly drink cocktails of any kind, it would not be necessary for me to enter into my profile that I want my Bloody Mary's "extra spicy."

You can locate others in your party. I don't know about locating just random folks. Likely not. It would be easy to link you to the ID of other members in your party - people in the same booking. I'd guess it could also be done with others who have a linked booking but would require their permission. I "believe" I have read (or heard) somewhere in the Princess stuff that one can have that turned off so that crew could locate you but others in your party can't. I really can't remember if that's included in the "safety mode" or not.

I have seen one person who posted this:"I am concerned about the "privacy" issues with this technology - I really don't like anyone knowing where I am at any particular time." However, he hasn't posted anything at all since I responded, "Hmmm... Your profile says you are 14 years old. Is this perhaps what the issue is all about?"

It may work the way the messaging feature of Princess@sea works.

I have not used it, but based on others who have posted it appears that on the ship you sign up for the messaging feature and get a code that you need to give to anyone you want to be able to message you.

I only assumed that people could allow tracking to be turned on and off at their discretion with a code similar to that of the Princess@sea.

Maybe it has to be done by someone at the PSD?

Based on what I have heard, it will work as follows:

People in the same cabin will be opted in for tracking by others in the cabin (not sure about same booking overall, like teens in other cabins).

Then via the 'Princess Choice' app or whatever it is finally called you can either switch into 'safety mode' which basically turns it into a sign and sail card that only the staff can track, or edit the list of people who can track you. and keep tracking on. If they are not in your cabin/booking you will explicitly need to grant another passenger permission to locate. Staff will always have permission, however unless you order something that function is limited to bridge, medical and security staff (i.e. your steward cannot go into a system and ask where you are).

If you go into 'safety' mode as of now I believe that disables the ability to order items but does not affect venue based tracking like how many people enter/leave the theatre.

A little bit of info teased out. The photographers should be getting equipment to read the medallions and tie photos to them (facial rec will still also be used).

Rumor only: As part of this they will move to an all digital preview format for photos, no more or limited prints. This may not happen same time as initial rollout.

I hated seeing all those unsold photos wasted. I'm wondering if you will view and order photos from a kiosk or from your cabin TV? Or both? I just hope they don't require you to download an app to a device to do it.
