Wheelie65 Posted January 18, 2017 #1 Share Posted January 18, 2017 Can anyone recommend a suitable travel insurance company that meets the requirements of P&O apart from the one they suggest, i.e. Holiday Extras. We're both over 65 with my husband being a diet-controlled diabetic. I've asked for a couple of quotes which seem extortionate for 18 days - perhaps I'm going wrong somewhere. Any advice would be appreciated. :)
Morgans Posted January 18, 2017 #2 Share Posted January 18, 2017 We had a decent quote from Columbus Insurance which we decided to go with. We specified it would cover us for cruises (which not all do) and we are happy with the cost. Remember if you are travelling to USA then this really boosts the price. They will give an online quote and also you can give them a ring. Good luck.
terrierjohn Posted January 18, 2017 #3 Share Posted January 18, 2017 Most of the price comparison sites will let you fill in your details and then give you dozens if not hundreds of quotes.
Mr Blue Sky Posted January 18, 2017 #4 Share Posted January 18, 2017 I recently purchased a two week insurance for my parents they are both over 80 dad has had a quad by pass about 15 years ago but it still makes the premium high previously Hol Xs he paid over 300 pounds to canaries found Go Get travel on comparison site and paid 130 for both of them (not cruise cover) So they are very happy with savings

Mysticalmother Posted January 18, 2017 #6 Share Posted January 18, 2017 Thanks for your replies. It's a caribbean cruise we're going on - will try Columbus and price comparison sites.:o As far as insurance companies are concerned, the Caribbean is the US (even though many of the islands are not)... so make sure your quote covers you. You also might find that an annual policy gives better value....especially if you take more than one holiday a year. We normally pay about £160 for the two of us on an annual policy (with LV) but a single trip one week in France, for me alone came out at just over £85....! The Wilkies Posted January 18, 2017 #9 Share Posted January 18, 2017 When I fill in my details I get a page full of "declined coverage" Please advise David I got a reasonable quote from Holiday Extras but when I came to buy a few days later they declined my husband!!! Looked for advice from the money saving expert (from TV). Went on World-first.co.uk. Highly rated and competitive price. Good luck.
wowzz Posted January 18, 2017 #10 Share Posted January 18, 2017 Try 'Insure and go'. Google them for contact details. It is easier if you call them and go through the details with them, rather than filling in an on-line form. yorkshirephil Posted January 19, 2017 #11 Share Posted January 19, 2017 I recently got a yearly policy with Staysure for 2 of us which covers America and cruising. The problem with insurance is that you only find out how good it is if you need to claim.
Wichenford Wolf Posted January 19, 2017 #12 Share Posted January 19, 2017 We are going on a cruise in April with an 84 year old (mother in law) and her 88 year old friend. I used All Clear cruise insurance - they cover all ages and medical conditions - for about £130 - £140 each. I have used All Clear for myself (medical condition) on this and previous cruises. mandylennon Posted January 19, 2017 #13 Share Posted January 19, 2017 Yes, we also insure with Staysure, if you ring them up, they go through everything to make sure you are covered adequately for a cruise.

Both my husband and myself have controlled hypertension and I also have a chronic disease which usually hikes the price up but our worldwide annual policly last year with Club Direct who are now part of Columbus was only £190. The policy also covered cruises.
Adammara Posted January 19, 2017 #16 Share Posted January 19, 2017 The trouble is as you get older, and have medial problems, travel insurance becomes a problem. We have been dropped by Boots, Post Office, Saga and Lloyds, due to age and health issues. A local broker got us cover for our last cruise, but now we can only get cover 6 months before the sail date. As Yorkshirephil said, you only know how good it is if you have to claim! silversurf Posted January 19, 2017 #18 Share Posted January 19, 2017 I never book any kind of holiday without finding out how much the insurance is going to be first. I have a couple of medical conditions, neither life-threatening in the short term. Any in USA, Caribbean, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or Hong Kong are now unaffordable for me due to high insurance premiums unless I book with a certain over 50s company who include my insurance with their holidays. We've recently booked a 14 night European cruise and used LV for myself and partner; £212.60 for both of us, which we thought reasonable. A friend who had lung cancer and has now been given the all-clear was recently quoted £1400 for two weeks to Canada to see her daughter and grandchildren. It is certainly a problem for those with medical conditions even if doctors give you the go ahead to travel.

Does this not bump up the premium or are you saying the included insurance cover is inclusive of any condition. DAVID.
LondonTowner Posted January 20, 2017 #20 Share Posted January 20, 2017 The only way to get a good deal is ring various insurance companies and get a quote. It is a long and boring procedure. We currently have an annual policy with Staysure which also includes cruising. As we go away quite a few times a year we find an annual policy better value. All we needed was a letter from my GP to say I was fit to travel. No additional costs.

They "laughed" when we tried them. The agent I spoke to was so condescending. Yes have a few issues but all under control and regular checkup appointments. terrierjohn Posted January 20, 2017 #23 Share Posted January 20, 2017 We are booked on a 35 night Caribbean and USA cruise next Feb. and I am expecting that the insurance for this will be exorbitant. The maximum length of holiday cover for over 70's with medical conditions is 28 days; a recent price comparison I did with a specialist cruise insurance comparison site came up with no offers at all, either for annual cover or single trip. I just have to hope that I can persuade my current insurer to cover me for this cruise as a special one off trip, and that the excess does not make me wince too much. Long and complicated balf, we have an annual policy which we switch between Europe and worldwide, depending on where we are going and which is currently Europe, but probably won't cover this cruise if we have to cancel. I did discuss the situation with the broker we use when I booked this, but they could not arrange cover so far out because we have medical conditions. So we will re-visit this in October when our policy is up for renewal and we have to hope our broker can find us some reasonable sort of cover.
