CRUISEFAN0001 Posted October 9, 2017 #4 Share Posted October 9, 2017 That's all well and good news...but once you get docked...there won't be much to see/do - much of the rest of the island still has major damage that will take many months to rebuild. fishywood Posted October 9, 2017 #6 Share Posted October 9, 2017 Doesn't mean a thing. Technically "the ports" in San Juan and in St Thomas have already reopened--but no cruise line is going to schedule port calls (other than the turnarounds in San Juan) until there is adequate tourist infrastructure up and running. St Maarten is no further ahead than the above two ports. And note that the above link is from an industry trade website quoting a speech given to an industry trade conference. When there is an official press release from the Tourism Office as reported by the news media you can then believe a reopening date is set. But not before in my book. navybankerteacher Posted October 10, 2017 #9 Share Posted October 10, 2017 That's the problem. The beaches may not be the normally great beaches for several months. A beach is a strip of sand along the shore- of debris is removed the beach is as good as ever. A simple beach snack bar can be put up in a month or so - and existing toilet facilities might not take that much repairing. Sure - the whole "tourist experience" will take many months to mend -- but for those most interested in a beach, things can be up and running within a month or two. Actually they probably lost a good portion of the beaches. That will require dredging sand up from off shore and blowing it to the beach to make it usable. Sent from my iPad using Forums Actually, some heavy storms add sand to beaches - after all, the beaches on Caribbean islands have been impacted by hurricanes for centuries - sure, some may need renewal, but there are parts of the island where sand will have to be removed, not added. zqvol Posted October 10, 2017 #12 Share Posted October 10, 2017 Just because the port opens doesn't mean that the island is ready to receive visitors. Sure, you may be able to dock, but where do you go from there, and how do you get there?
Krazy Kruizers Posted October 10, 2017 #13 Share Posted October 10, 2017 Thank you for the information. Wonder what will be open -- what tours will be offered? Seems like a short time to get everything in operating order.
