Greetings Coolers! Roller coaster temps persist.....3 F as I key.

Congrats on the F seats J! Excellent news!

And a wee bit of good news here too. Son-in-law survived the surgery. We let out our breath. Now to see if his body can continue to recover. Little rays of sunshine today and we'll go with that!

Today's funny....

Great news about your son in law, Mysty! Ill keep those good thoughts and prayers coming your way. I love those funnies you post.

Tothesunset, thank you for the encouraging words. I had a pretty down day yesterday, feeling like I just wasn't getting any better. No, no antibacterial mouthwash, but I've been very good about taking my amoxicillin. Last dose is tomorrow morning. I'm also doing warm saltwater rinses 6x/day and nearly done with a prednisone pack.

So good hear of Mysty's SIL's successful surgery! And Napria is healing! These are bright spots in my day of winter weather alert and 9F outside. Regardless, I'll be off to my Drama Club rehearsal in Ithaca (a bit more than an hour away). I'll be directing this time and totally enthused about it. Have a wonderful day, Coolers!

The saltwater mouthwashes certainly do the trick. You are past the danger period now for infection - you really would be very unfortunate for that to happen now - so healing should progress uneventfully, if more slowly than you might wish! But you are obviously a good girl who follows the surgeon's instructions - would that everyone were so cooperative.

Thanks so much Napria, Spins and Cam! It feels so good to breathe again. Just the tiny bit of optimism is making a huge difference to mindset.

Cam...best wishes on your directorship! Enjoy the experience!

J...another picture-perfect dish! Yum! How did your freezer clean-out go?

Hi M, it went very well and I was rewarded today with a decent quantity of the sirloin I mentioned before being delivered today. I was able to joint them into generous two person joints and I vacuum packed them and they are now in the freezer for future enjoyment. They are really marbled and look almost wagyu in quality. Left one in the fridge for sunday and I've bought a nice bottle of Fitou. :)

Best wishes for continued convalescence to Napria, and mysty's SIL. Hope everything goes smoothly, and only moves in a positive direction without speed bumps or hiccups

Probably going out for food tonight instead of cooking. There's a new Eastern European place we want to try. Mainly Polish, but similar to Western Ukrainian stuff that Chris likes, and that her mother used to cook for us years ago, when we were kids. Hard to believe she's been gone 16 years today.

Cam, enjoy the Ithaca trip. Jeff, sirloin looks delish.

Happy weekend to all!

For those Coolers outside of North America, perhaps my ground hog picture did not make much sense. According to folklore if a groundhog sees its shadow in the morning of February 2, it will return to its burrow, indicating six more weeks of winter. If it doesn't go back into hiding, spring will arrive early.

Mixed results today from the various ground hogs:

- Nova Scotia's Shubenacadie Sam did not see his shadow.

- Pennsylvania's Punxsutawney Phil — saw its shadow, meaning more cold and blustery weather.

- Ontario's Wiarton Willie announced six more weeks of winter.

- Winnipeg Wyn did see its shadow, predicting more wintry weather.

- Fred la marmotte, the star groundhog in Val d'Espoir, Que., didn't see its shadow Friday morning.

Hopefully we will get some relief soon from the roller coaster that is Winter 2018.

Oh, and for the New Yorkers in the crowd, I'm happy to report that Staten Island Chuck DID NOT see his shadow! So I guess that means I can dig out my flip flops soon! (giggle!) This is as opposed to a couple of years ago when NYC's mayor DeBlasio, DROPED the then poor CHUCK on his head and killed him. Maybe you don't like the forecast, but that's no reason to bump the poor thing off.....(leave that to the Jack Russells!) But I digress....

All of the food porn is wonderful....just had some of John's homemade chicken soup....so delish on a freezing cold day (about 10F at this second in time).

I was glad to hear that Mysty's SIL got thru important surgery and Napira is on the mend!

Have a good weekend, all......GO EAGLES!

Linda

Thanks Linda and Lois!

Linda...your poor former Staten Island Chuck! At least your current version had some good news. :)

And Lois...there are many heaving huge sighs of "What now?". Many sympathizers for your "rant".

I won't get political either, but am in total agreement......as horrible as this sounds, I'm almost ashamed to be an American....

What an awful thing to say, but that's what John and I are feeling right now....OK, done.

Good morning (from Vietnam) Coolers,

Some of you have asked about the minutia of life in China. I'll give it a go... in several installments.

Getting to China -

After almost 30 years 'at sea': commercial fishing (think Deadliest Catch), Fisheries Officer & Coast Guard in Canada I retired, did some travelling (Antarctica)... but found myself bored silly. I couldn't afford to travel (I'm not a 'backpacker') or live on a cruise ship year round, so got a job teaching the S. Korean Coast Guard and moved to Tongyeong for six years. In Sept. 2011, I'd had enough of Korea (hate the food) and decided I wanted to teach in China. I was hired by a provincial engineering university - housing supplied, 14 hrs. of classes a week with five months per year of paid holidays: two-and-a-half months winter & two-and-a-half months summer, between semesters (it depends on the lunar calendar). Chinese universities close completely during vacations (more about that later). I had to move back to Canada for five months to get my Chinese work (Z) visa 'sorted'. That was my introduction to the nightmare that is commie bureaucracy. I was used to bureaucracy (Fisheries & Coast Guard) but the Chinese take it to a whole different level. :rolleyes:After the 'paper chase' and getting a medical exam (a whole different nightmare), in Feb. 2012 (three days after the start of my contract) I got my Z visa... and purchased a one-way ticket from Victoria to Zhengzhou on EVA. I arrived on a freezing (-10 C) but sunny winter day, and was met at the airport by a rep. from the university's FAO (Foreign Affairs Office). :D

Well said Jeff! Democracy does not always mean that the best candidate is chosen. But actually being able to cast a vote is a privilege that many in our world are not allowed. Unfortunately not all voters weigh the impact of their vote and not all understand the policies being espoused by their candidate.

Hi, I have to respond......the only thing I am ashamed of is the person who is living on 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.....

Please don't be ashamed to be an American though:)

OK, I was going to cook something, but I am going out for a burger and a beer.......be back later!
