The Case of the Missing Berries

Hello fellow Cruisers,

I've been reading about the butter (or lack of it ) on the Crown New England Cruise of 15-October and particularly enjoyed the variation of BYOB and the potential purchase of "The Ultimate Butter Package" - OMG! ROTFLMBO! However, also having taken that particular cruise, I wanted to point out another foodie occurrence that we have not been used to on previous Princess Cruises - the Case of the Missing Berries.

I truly enjoy different types of fresh berries with breakfast and sometimes with lunch - Blueberries, Strawberries, Raspberries, etc. I knew something was awry when on the second day I asked for berries and was told that they only had Strawberries and no other berries. Wait a minute, we just left New York! Didn't the Crown get restocked, replenished?!? After all we were going to the land of fresh blueberries and other berries in New England and Canada. But noooooo! This was not to be the case. In fact, with 3 days left in the cruise, they told me that they also had run out of Strawberries! Oy!

Gee, we could have got berries in Maine. We could have got berries in Halifax. We could have even got Black Current berries in Prince Edward Island. The height of insult was being in port in Quebec for two days where Princess could have obtained multiple types of berries, but noooo! For breakfast on that 2nd day in Quebec no berries were to be found. I truly hope that the new cruisers coming on in Quebec to ultimately arrive in Florida on the next voyage of the Crown would be able to order berries for their cereal or their oatmeal or just a simple bowl of berries.

News Flash!!! We found many whole baskets of blueberries outside the restaurants in the hall of the fantastic hotel Le Chateau Frontenac in Old Quebec - unfortunately they and their woman picker / caretaker were BRONZED (by the artist Belanger)!

You can't blame those of us on the previous Crown cruise for eating up all the berries -- we didn't have any either! [Not even the first two days, so count yourself lucky there.] They also ran low on lemons and rationed them only as garnish for fish -- when DW asked for a slice of lemon for her water, the water brought some bright green [clearly lime] slices and said loudly 'here is your lemon'! They wouldn't even admit they were out -- that added insult to injury.

On my Ruby cruise in january, I asked for a small serving of blueberries with my breakfast (first full day of the cruise) since I'm prediabetic and don't do well with higher carb fruits (bananas, melon, etc). The waiter in the MDR refused and said they were only for garnish. I was not impressed

Found this also on the Crown. Had a free upgrade to a Suite and had berries every morning in Sabatini's for breakfast. However, when I asked for them in the MDR for either lunch or dinner they had mysteriously disappeared. Was told sorry no berries. Did say they we still prolific in Sabatini's breakfast, was met with a black expression. Did think of asking for a spare bowl as we left Sabatini's to carry in to MDR on next visit, but decided not to be so petty.

Suppose if you pay more, then more. chouce becomes available .

Just ask for 20 servings of whatever they use the blueberries on for garnish plus an empty bowl. ;p:D

Want Dijon mustard, HP Sauce or Heinz ketchup?... purchase the Ultimate Condiment Package.

Want berries on your oatmeal, parsley on your potatoes or 'sprinkles' on your ice cream?... purchase the Ultimate Garnish Package.

Saw a lady at one of the pool bars ask for a bowl of cherries. Was told for drinks only and she got mad, threatened to order 10 drinks with the then AIBP and pour them out and keep the cherries.

she left "cherryless" and mumbling...

ROTFLMBO. Your story is a funny read. :);) Interesting to read what PAXs complain about. :)

Hope you can enjoy your next cruise. :)

We were on 10/4-10/15 and they ran out of lemons and when I asked for tea they brought it with the lime I sent it back and assistant waiter from there on brought it without the Lime. One time in the buffet they brought the tea but no sugar container on the table, I looked around didn't see any on other tables so I asked the waiter for it and got a huff....really....??? I am wondering if it is the crown herself..as all sorts of weird food things seem to be going on along with odd attitudes I have never had on a princess ship. While it did not ruin our cruise it sure made us stop and think and laugh a bit about what happened to the princess customer service on this ship. Sure wonder if it is the management on that ship. Myself and a friend ordered the Curtis Stone pot pie...it came out and was HUGE...I was impressed...that is until I cut into the top ...while the ramekin was about 3 inches tall and the puff pastry on top even higher, the inside was filled with only about an inch if that of pot pie filling........whereas my friends was to the top...but it was tasteless so I am glad I didn't have a lot of it...lol.

First Butter, and now Berries!

Have you considered insisting on boarding an overfull elevator and then pushing your way out on your floor before anyone can get in in order to hurry to your stateroom balcony (be safe and avoid dirty dishes in the hallway and negative scooter encounters) to have a quick smoke while using a drone to retrieve some berries and contemplating which shorts to wear to formal night for which you will not tip because you could not order multiple entrees? The drone could deliver the berries to your towel that is holding your place at the pool that has too many kids acting like neanderthals because their parents are not watching them and because the world has changed so much, and not for the better.

off the berries subject just had to interject that the curtis stone chicken pot pie is probably the most popular new dish princess has introduced in years and is WONDERFUL!!! really have to be careful with putting huge emphasis on food matters on this site as peoples taste really are different

I am among the few who have no use for lemon on fish or chicken. (Strangest use of lemons, ever ! In Paris Corona Beer with lemon instead of lime.)

OTOH, if there is tartar sauce with fish I put it on the potatoes. Same goes with horseradish sauce...mix it into the mashed taters, not on the steak.

Did you find the C.S. Chicken Pot Pie overly salty?

Sounds like an odd use of condiments.. But to each their own. :)

BTW, do you use ketchup or mayonnaise with your French fries. Or eat them naked? ;)

Enjoy your next cruise.

Last week, on the Regal, we noticed that item and mentioned it to DW. Her quick reaction was that she makes a great chicken pot pie and does not need Curtis Stone :). We dined for 10 days in the Regal MDRs and always shared larger tables (Open Dining). In 10 days we did not see a single person order a Curtis Stone item. One evening I tried to order the Curtis Stone Port Belly dish but our waiter quickly talked me out of it saying that many were complaining it was too fatty. The following evening we noticed that the same exact Curtis Stone Pork Belly dish was again on the menu. We happed to have the same wonderful waiter and he remarked that since few ordered the item during the previous dinner they put it back on the menu. I asked him if it had been cooked the previous night and reheated and the entire table (and waiters) roared.

The comment about the pot pie reminded me of the scenes in Casino involving the blueberry muffins, which "Food and Beverage Director" Ace found to be highly inconsistent. So now we have Captain Queeg and a parallel with alleged gangster in one thread. (BTW I don't mean to imply that the diners vexed by indifferently prepared pot pies are gangsters)

Don’t forget to ask for and eat a bowel of dingle berries. You may want to count them first to ensure you are getting your fair share;

THIS IS AN ACTUAL TRUE STORY...(from real life, I swear!!)

My spouse worked with a woman who called her granddaughter "My little dingleberry." He explained that maybe that wasn't a great nickname. She did not believe him and asked her husband and daughter who said it was lovely until finally her son clued her in.

BTW, do you use ketchup or mayonnaise with your French fries. Or eat them naked? I do not eat many, usually buck naked. If we are out with Pete's cousin she brings most of mine home & feeds them to her chickens.

I prefer hamburgers with a combo of mustard & mayo...makes me welcome in Montréal.
