though i know its sound advice i will not be arriving the day before. there's a flight arriving 10 am. i guess if it doesnt go then i use my insurance ;)

I'm sorry, you lost me....your original question pertained to leaving the ship and getting to the airport?

This post sounds like your arrival at the airport in Ft Lauderdale ....the day of...at 10 am......barring any flight delays, due to weather, mechanical or other acts...you would be fine...

BUT...going forward...now that Princess does offer EZ Air....I would book through Princess if I had to come in on the day of embarkation.....For those who know (I don't) doesn't if offer some kind of insurance

No you will not make it for an 8:30 flight. Your ship needs to clear. YOU must go through Immigration and customs. EVen if carry off your own luggage you need at least one hour before the flight to check luggage.

The earliest flight I would book for FLL is 11:30 am

it sounds like the 2:40 flight would be what i need then. so since this is my thread let me ask a travel question. can you briefly type up what its like at the airport these days . use FLL as an example if you wish. i mean the little things like security and x ray and all that. in 1997 i dropped my luggage at the curb and went to the desk and checked in and sat there easy peasy. i have no clue what its like today out there.

more of a curiosity than what will prevent me from taking a trip.

if its a weekend leaving/arriving it will be a zoo as these are cruise turn over days. Allow at least 2 hours for checking in luggage getting through security- getting to your gate

If you do not need to be back day day of debarkation price out the difference between the later flight and the early flight the next morning. Sometimes the cost of the later flight is more than the cost of the early flight and hotel.

Airport security is quite different than 20 years ago. No liquids of more than 3.4 oz may be in your carry-on. You can bring an empty water bottle and fill it on the other side. You must remove your shoes, belt, and everything from your pockets. Your carry on items will go through a scanner. This includes your cellphone, shoes, jacket, etc. If they don't know what something is, they will hand search your bag. If you have a pacemaker or a replaced knee or anything like that, let them know as the pacemaker can't go through the metal detector or scanner.

You may go through a traditional metal detector or it may be a full body scanner, depending on the terminal at FLL. The lines can be long, which is why everyone is recommending a flight after noon. You can print your boarding pass at the airport - no need to do it on the ship (although you can - they offer a small internet package to do it on the last day)

Most airlines (except southwest) charge for checked bags. Your credit card may give you a free first bag. Weight limit is 50lbs.

Pack a boatload of patience, have your photo ID (driver's licence) and boarding pass ready, and just follow the instructions. Your checked bag must be handed in 1hr before your flight departs, and you must be at the gate 30 min before I believe for a domestic flight.

Also, if you want to buy food on the plane, they only accept credit cards. You may bring any food purchased post-security on board with you.

Hope this helps!

OP says they haven't flown in 20 years. As goofy559 says, rules are much different now. At most airports you need to be checking in 2 hours before the flight. Early flights at Fort Lauderdale maybe 1 1/2 hours. OP isn't going to have a trusted traveler program, so can't get in those lines at security. Body and luggage scans can take an hour or more. Sometimes you can drop luggage at curb, but usually have to take it inside, print your own luggage tags and put them on your bags, walk bags over to airline person, have them check your ID and THEN head to security. I remember the old days. Flying is a real pain now.

The first post says 2 years. They have taken 3 cruises in the past 2 years but has almost 3000 posts

goofy thanks for the detailed reply. now its my turn for a detailed reply that i'm posting in a few of the threads where people were helping me:

for those following alongwith my 1000 questions and other uncertainties: for the past day the websiteshowed only singles available at the casino rate. i emailed the nice TA fromprincess that had emailed me before. she said there's some glitch and that manydoubles are left. so she pressed some buttons and got us in a dirt cheap obstbalc and WE ARE GOING ON A CRUISE!!!!!

also i follow princess airfares pretty much hourly during theday. turns out the exact perfect flights at a very good price became availableand we got the last 2 seats!!!! bought the platinum plan in case of snow so ithink we are covered.

i'm ecstatic beyond belief. didnt think id get back on regalagain so soon..and i havent flown in 20 years and i hear you gotta pay for thebathroom and take off your shoes or whatever but thats ok.

moral of the story: play a few bucks the slots even if you hategambling, you can get some realllllly good rates. i'm proof of this.

--------------

now relative to this thread. i'm leaving on non stops from philly at 7 am then FLL at 1127 am. jetblue and they have cheaper bags then spirit and i do believe from my research that jetblue is a better choice than spirit anyway. i appreciate all the input and look forward to any other airport/flight advice.

i will buy princess transfers simply for the ease of it likely. but since you guys know more about this., how much would other transportation be exactly?

In my opinion.....ABSOLUTELY NOT on the Princess transfers from the airport to the port.....you can cab it for a fraction of the cost of the transfer, how many of you are going....if two, then you would cab it for less that the price of one transfer from Princess

We disembarked Regal on 12/3 with our group being in the 6:20 walkoff group. We actually began about 6:30 and we were sitting at the gate at FLL at 7:05.We have Global Entry which includes TSA precheck. We had a 9:00 flight and we were well aware of the risk of booking that early. We normally only book flights after 9:30 and have never missed a flight or had a close call.If we miss the flight, there are plenty more.

A few years ago, in Fort Lauderdale, we were held up in the ship and it was after 10:00 am before anyone could disembark. I would never book a flight before 12:00 noon. I don’t like to be rushed or worry about making my flight.

With that being said, I know there are many people who have very successfully made it off at a very early time.
