Renegade Puffers [Smokers] on Ships

Oh..sorry...I thought it was a rule.....cause doesn't seem to be much common sense out there...surpised cruise lines don't make it a rule to enter various eating areas..

Anyways...anyone who breaks rules need to be held accountable..agreed...including saving chairs, sharing drink packages and the list goes on.

The main point of the OP's post here, at least in my understanding was the wide spread and blatant breaking of the rules by smokers. Which I have never seen before or heard of to be honest. I think there maybe some sweeping generalizations being made here.

I have done 10 cruises and never seen it ONCE yet by even one smoker. So not saying it cant happen, but this thread makes It sound likes it back in the 80's and its nothing but blue smoke everywhere....for people to say they need to study the deck plans of the ship to escape the smoke is well..........

We had an inside cabin on our last Jan. Eclipse trip. We could on occasion smell smoke. Not bad, but it was present at times. We've smelled it before on Balcony trips as well.. A guy 3 doors down was smoking on his balcony on our Queen Victoria trip & he got charged a stiff cleaning fine according to our cabin attendant who cleaned that guy's room, too.

If it were me I'd rat out the smoker to a staff member and let them handle the violator. It's not worth the confrontation that may happen.

You've seen many of my posts, you know I'm willing to take that chance! I shamed a guy for touching the food with his hands on the Eclipse a few years back.(sticking finger in food & then into mouth ewww!)When I told him "Hey, don't touch the food with your hands!" His response was "#-off!" Wrong answer! I then shouted loudly for everyone to hear: "Hey, this pig is touching the food with his hands! Do any of you feel that with Noro virus breaking out on ships these days, is this proper behavior?" Well, the guy was "bitched" out by well over 100 pax. He then quietly slid out of sight. people will very seldom be confrontational when faced with an angry group. As to smoking, I do have to say I've not seen the offensive smokers some have seen. I will say that I never saw so many smokers as I did on the Regal Princess. As of 2016, they still allowed smoking in the casino. I saved both some money & my health by avoiding it.

Yes I do as most of us on this forum know that. But I believe it's not in the best interest to encourage others to engage in some sort of cruise rage either. That's all I was saying.

Having also been on the same cruise as the OP the renegade smokers did exist, along with other rules infractions that were mostly ignored by the Infinity staff. In regards to the smokers they used the outside areas on decks 4, 10, and 11 on both sides of the ship even after many days of the CD using part of the Captain's morning announcement asking the smokers to follow the rules. About 10 days into the cruise guys in dark blue suits wearing gold badges started appearing in public areas, but I didn't see them interacting with the passengers. There were some large family groups on-board and these groups were there to party. For example, on New Years Day the naturalist had scheduled a 5 AM event in the Constellation lounge to watch dawn as we pulled into Ushuaia, but we could not use the lounge since the New Years party was still going strong. Even at that time the smokers were outside on the starboard side, including a guy I had reported and who had been talked to by an officer just 10 hours earlier.

Agree ... me thinks drew"69" is one of those rude renegade puffers as the original OP put it so eloquently. This is our first X cruise and hope this does not become an issue for us as I have respiratory problems. I have seen someone on these posts where smoking areas are listed on the Reflection but can't seem to find them now.

Not at all. Just someone who does not spend their cruise constantly watching and reporting on what others do.

Seems some on this board go on vacation to pick fights.

Part of my regular packing list includes a small survival whistle that I carry on hikes.

I have used it several times when I can smell a smoker on a balcony. I grab my whistle, give it a blast, and yell out "No Smoking on the balcony":o

So far, it's worked better than trying to get an uninterested staff afraid of confrontatons involved.;)

On New Year’s Eve on reflection they turned 3 of the tables by mast bar into reserved for those who bought some champagne, with tablecloths etc but did leave the ashtrays out. We accepted although we don’t smoke that if we wanted to sit there too, this was a smoking area. We were gobsmacked at the number of people who came and stood within 20 feet smoking, flicking the ash on the floor, onto the bar or over the railings. We reported two who threw their lit ends overboard from deck 15 and the staff did nothing. So we stopped people ourselves and gave then ashtrays. 1 steward spent the entire evening with a dustpan and brush sweeping ash and cigarettes butts up so I gave him a tip and said thanks.

Well, now I’m certainly reconsidering that South American cruise! First question is why did it take TEN days of this for Celebrity to get the guys in suits and badges out there? Second question is why weren’t the party animals cleared out of the lounge before your event?

LMAO ... I don't think I would enjoy hearing that whistle either but if it solves the problem, maybe not such a bad idea. It did give me a good laugh. ;)

I smelled smoke coming from the balcony next door on day 2 of our last cruise. I spoke loudly saying "I wonder if people realize that smoking is not allowed on balconies". We never smelled it again. No confrontation, no problem!

Though I haven’t personally encountered the behavior described by those who were on Infinity and Reflection on New Year’s Eve, I don’t doubt their accounts. I’ve personally reported two people in four cruises. Once for the person smoking on the veranda adjacent to ours, and once for the person smoking in a stall in the Womens’ Room. I have smelled smoke on other occasions, but couldn’t ascertain the source. In truth, the source on those occasions could have been designated smoking areas above or below my veranda. One of the main reasons I choose to sail Celebrity is the smoking policy, so yes, it is important to me, and yes, I will immediately report infractions.

My husband and I were on the Dec 2015 holiday cruise on the Infinity from Valparaiso to Buenos Aires and we noticed this same behaviour. When going to the Constellation Lounge early in the AM for the Sunrise Club, the deck outside the lounge was littered with cigarette butts. As well, the lounge was filled with very drunk partiers, this around 6AM, making it unpleasant to be there and enjoy MickeyLive and Milos discussing what we were seeing. Too late in the cruise they change the lounge hours to close at 4AM rather than an open-ended 'late'.

The senior crew had to be well aware of what was happening, but chose not to deal with it. As I call it, a revival of the short lived 'X the rules' campaign. The South American itinerary is a wonderful one, though I would highly recommend NOT doing it over the holiday.

I was thinking along similar lines, but I’d love to use my whistle in OVC:evilsmile: Guess it’s best to not go there because the din is already loud enough lol.

travlr21 were these college kids or putative adults? Thanks for the warning! I’ll definitely place Holiday cruises just below spring break cruises on our “Avoid List”. And thank you for the recommendation. DH and I have been extremely interested in the South American itinerary, so we’ll look for a sailing less frequented by drunken, inconsiderate louts.

I would say they were young adults, in their 20s. Though, be advised, as the cruise was outside the US, the drinking age was posted as 18.

We,too, were on the OP’s cruise, and can attest to the poor behavior and reckless smoking.

Smoking is a danger on cruise ships, so, “if you see something, say something”.

Unless you enjoy a family cruise atmosphere, I would avoid this itinerary at Holiday time

Personally If I was sitting on my balcony I would find someone blowing a whistle and yelling to be equally as obnoxious. I believe that there is some language about negatively impacting others cruise experience (such as one making noise on balconies, or is state rooms, and thus one can also complain to staff about your choice of response. Best let the staff resolve problems and not make new ones.

I don’t mind a family cruise atmosphere, if by family you mean parents and grandparents traveling with children, of varying ages, who are reasonably well behaved and well supervised. I’ve never liked the assumption that people must be segregated by age or life stage. That said, I do mind a frat party or spring break party atmosphere. If I wanted that, I’d sail a line that markets that experience, and I’d save a fat lot of money!

I smelled balcony smoke on my xmas Silhouette cruise again. Every time I was out there. Unfortunately, I couldn't tell where it was coming from, unlike previous cruises where I reported neighbours. I don't remember a cruise where I haven't smelled it at least once. I can't stand disrespectful smokers. I wish the ships were smoke-free, but I accept the designated areas, and I stay away from them.
