tonygcharles Posted March 21, 2018 #1 Share Posted March 21, 2018 We are going on NCL Sky mid April 18 Had a email saying today the the "Service charge" will be going up to $19.99 a day from 1st April 18 Sky and Sun We only booked it a few weeks ago It also said we could pre pay the old rate if we go to cruise summery section on there website Funnily enough it not available for display !? From what I can see , the old rate would be about $13.99 I don't mind tipping but I think that much of a rise is excessive Can we remove the service charge on NCL and pay who we like onboard ? champagne123 Posted March 21, 2018 #2 Share Posted March 21, 2018 You should really post this on the NCL boards....but omg ...that is crazy!
Rare BlueRiband Posted March 21, 2018 #3 Share Posted March 21, 2018 Good that the hard working crew gets a raise. To answer your other question, NCL no longer allows the service charge to be removed on board. Instead a form has to be filled out describing the specific service failure and how it was not resolved on board. It is then imaged and emailed to a shoreside office for a credit after the cruise. As you can imagine this policy caused a lot of descussion on the NCL board when it was implemented. Too many Cheap Charlies and Tightwad Terrys were removing all gratuities while personally giving little or nothing to the crew that served them. Just because they could. I believe this policy only applies to North American passengers. OP being from the UK can still have them removed instantly and with no questions asked (unless that too has or will change). paul929207 Posted March 22, 2018 #7 Share Posted March 22, 2018 Sure seems like a big increase. We pay $13.50 per day for balcony and below on Princess.
Rare BlueRiband Posted March 22, 2018 #8 Share Posted March 22, 2018 The OP has made a huge exaggeration by imlpying that the gratuites were increasing $6 ppd. This from NCL's official site: How much are the service charges? - For bookings made prior to April 1st, 2017, regardless of the date of your cruise: PREPAID service charges will be charged the price of: • $15.50 USD per person per day The Haven and Suites; • $13.50 USD per person per day for Mini-Suites and below - FOR ALL SHIPS (To pre-pay your service charges, Log In to My NCL or contact your travel professional) - For bookings made between April 1, 2017 - March 31, 2018: All PREPAID service charges will be charged the price of: • $16.99 USD per person per day The Haven and Suites; • $13.99 USD per person per day for Mini-Suites and below. Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Sun (Port Canaveral sailings only*) - $21.99 USD per person per day for Suites; $18.99 USD per person per day for Mini-Suites and below. - For sailings on or after April 1, 2018: All service charges PAID ONBOARD, regardless of booking date will be charged the NEW price of: • $17.50 USD per person per day The Haven and Suites; • $14.50 USD per person per day for Mini-Suites and below. Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Sun (Port Canaveral sailings only*) - $22.99 USD per person per day for Suites; $19.99 USD per person per day for Mini-Suites and below... So the NCL Sun and Sky charges are increasing by $1. Anybody who can afford to sail on a premium ship in the fleet can afford $1 ppd.
fishywood Posted March 22, 2018 #9 Share Posted March 22, 2018 So the NCL Sun and Sky charges are increasing by $1. Anybody who can afford to sail on a premium ship in the fleet can afford $1 ppd. The Norwegian Sun (2001) and Norwegian Sky (1999) are two of their oldest ships. Not even close to the current generation of megaship. And by my math they sure are increasing by $6: - For bookings made prior to April 1st, 2017, regardless of the date of your cruise: PREPAID service charges will be charged the price of: • $15.50 USD per person per day The Haven and Suites; • $13.50 USD per person per day for Mini-Suites and below -FOR ALL SHIPS - For bookings made between April 1, 2017 - March 31, 2018: All PREPAID service charges will be charged the price of: Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Sun (Port Canaveral sailings only*) - $21.99 USD per person per day for Suites; $18.99 USD per person per day for Mini-Suites and below. - For sailings on or after April 1, 2018: All service charges PAID ONBOARD, regardless of booking date will be charged the NEW price of: Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Sun (Port Canaveral sailings only*) - $22.99 USD per person per day for Suites; $19.99 USD per person per day for Mini-Suites and below... The $1 difference is just the discount for pre-paying. All of this does beg the question: what's the deal with the higher DSC specifically for Port Canaveral? CruiseGal999 Posted March 22, 2018 #10 Share Posted March 22, 2018 Didn't NCL JUST raise this from $12.50/day/pp to $13.50/day/pp a year ago? And NOW it's up to $20 a day pp ??? OR is this 04/01st and someone is being funny early?

paul929207 Posted March 22, 2018 #14 Share Posted March 22, 2018 So, OP, aare you pre-paying to get the $13.99 rate?
mjkacmom Posted March 22, 2018 #15 Share Posted March 22, 2018 The DSC is higher on that ship (not $13.99) because it’s open bar. Most of the other ships offer the UBP as a perk, but charge an 18% gratuity on the actual price of the package. So, just checked, Sun and Sky are only going up $1 a day, from $18.99 to $19.99. mjkacmom Posted March 22, 2018 #16 Share Posted March 22, 2018 So, OP, aare you pre-paying to get the $13.99 rate? The current rate on that ship is not $13.99.
Rare BlueRiband Posted March 22, 2018 #17 Share Posted March 22, 2018 ... All of this does beg the question: what's the deal with the higher DSC specifically for Port Canaveral? Looks lke post #15 answered that. Perhaps those on open bar ships might make a point of getting their money's worth and thus generate a lot more work for the staff. tonygcharles Posted March 22, 2018 Author #18 Share Posted March 22, 2018 So, OP, aare you pre-paying to get the $13.99 rate? I can't see the pre payed rate , its not showing on the uk NCL website , So I assumed that the price was the same as Epic and pride of America $13 ish what I have payed the last few years I have messaged NCL to sort this out as I cant pre pay anyway
