Surprise upgrade

I upgraded our reservation to a suite to celebrate my husband’s big birthday. He doesn’t know. I want to surprise him at embarkation. Any ideas on how to surprise him & make it special? Appreciate your input.

Congratulations on your husband's "big biirthay". What a lovely gift for him.

What ship will you be on?

The moment you print your boarding pass to check in on the ship your husband will see the you are in a suite. As well, once you arrive at the terminal the check in procedure is such that you will enter the line that says "Suites check in". You will also be escorted to an area for suite guests until you are actually allowed to board the ship.

So all that being said perhaps the week prior to your cruise you could start to give your husband some clues each night at dinner or breakfast. For example you could provide a "different sweet" each day. Obviously he will ask questions and you could say something along the lines that sweets will lead to some amazing things. You could put photos from the Celebrity website alongside each "sweet". Of course it would be small pieces and eventually the "puzle" could show the suite you would be occupying. Failing that you could present him with a cake for his birthday and have written on it, "you are a sweetie; join me iin a suite".

I am sure you will receive many suggestions. Just remember enjoy your table on board. Come back and let us all know how you surprised him.

Enjoy the "suite life"....just remember it is hard to go back. :-)

Again, very nice what you have done for hubby and I am sure he will be thrilled.

5 days before the cruise I would give him a letter each day- out of order of course- so that on the last day, it spells suite.

I would give the letters in this order- u-e-i-t and then the s... :)

have fun and enjoy.

If he's not one to want to look at documents ahead of time, and you can put the tags on the bags without him noticing at the pier, why not shock him and say "this line is ridiculous, let's go crash the suite line!" and march off there while he follows you embarrassed...

Great idea!! Embarrassing your husband is up there with embarrassing your kids! Seriously though, my husband would never look at the luggage tags....

But he would not BE embarrassed because he would belong in the suite line. :D

This is awesome. My husband only looks at the tags if I show them to him, so all of this would work! If he does like to be involved, then I would say to surprise him with a very nice dinner and have the travel docs delivered to the table by the waiter.

I really surprised my DH with a cruise for his 60th! I planned and planned ... all right in front of him but he is so oblivious to anything I am over here doing on my computer that he was unaware of the surprises to yet to come. Sometimes, they won't even figure it out until it is right in front of their face. I might even like surprising people more than I like surprises of my own.

Not to be a kill joy but I was on a roll call with a couple that the lady did this, and it seemed to backfire. I believe it was their 30th anniversary.

The husband went through the roof when he found out the cost, and the lady who was one of the leaders of the Roll Call and had planned many things with the group, but didn't show up to anything after the first get together. Apparently she was embarrassed as the husband was visibly annoyed every time you saw them.

Everyone has their system of what works for them, but sometimes it's best to be on the same page when making a major expenditure, especially when it's totally out of the norm on what you've done in the past.

I may get slammed for this but I kind of agree it should be a shared decision when it involves a large sum of "our" money.

Flowers in the cabin would be a nice surprise for me.

Thank you everyone who shared some extremely creative ideas to surprise him. I’m certain I will use them. Your input is truly appreciated.

He thinks his birthday present is a day with a fly fishing guide in Ireland pre-cruise. So, the suite should really be a big surprise,

To those who don’t think my surprise is a good idea, I can assure you that I know my husband well enough and he will love it! Also, there is an assumption that I am using “our”money for the up grade. That is not the case. I used my own money, which I have sole discretion of how I spend it. I certainly would not plan something as a present if there was a chance he would not enjoy it.

Whew....good to hear that because if my DH spent “our” money to upgrade to a suite and the cost was over 500 I would be really upset. So that’s fortunate that you know beforehand that your DH won’t get mad.

Great ideas from the posters for you to ponder...

Happy cruising!

Get your luggage tags at the pier and not in advance. You can simply tell DH you will handle the luggage with the porter and that you meet up with him at the door. That way he probably will not over hear the cabin number, and he may not know it is suite even if he did. He will find out however when you check in and handed your seapass cards. Perhaps the color will not tip him off.

If you are in a "higher end" suite you will be escorted to Michael's Club. If you are in other suites at check in they will still direct you to a waiting area until the ship is ready to receive guests. At that time you will be directed to Michael's Club. As well, once you check in at the "Suite Check-In" at the pier your cards with say "Suite Guest" so your husband will definitely know prior to arriving in your room.

Once the shock sets in I am confident that he will be thrilled and thank you so much for what you did to make his birthday a special day for him.

Enjoy the "suite life", Michael's Club and all the pampering you both will receive.

Have a great cruise....which ship and when?

Even before that...why would you not go into the suite line to get checked in? Why would you wait in the longer lines?

No matter when he figures it out it will be a nice surprise! This thread almost makes me sorry I discussed it in advance ("do you want to try a suite? this is the difference from what we were going to spend...")
