Rudeness and bad attitudes of cruisers

Boy, are you ever right. I live in Michigan and would never sail from certain states or certain cities for that matter. Put it this way, I'm from Michigan as well and I'd never sail from Detroit, St Louis, Chicago, Atlanta, (all in theory, there aren't any) and we had this issue out of New Orleans as well ........ They have different "attitudes" like you said .......

 

 

 

Me too, me too. I'm from NJ and less than a 45 min drive to either Bayonne or New York, but I'd rather pay extra for hotel and flights to go out of Florida (and recently NOLA--great experience on the Dream nice people) than to cruise from here.

??? Was I rude? On a past cruise an elderly couple down the hall was outside their cabin door and another couple joined them. The foursome stood there talking and totally blocked the hallway. I am usually soft spoken but this time I spoke a little louder than my usual voice and said "excuse me" so they would give us room to pass. Usually when I say "excuse me" people tend to ignore me as my voice is soft. They moved out of the way but one of them remarked loudly that I had been "rude" to them!!! There are many sides to every story I guess . . .

I'm reminded of the people that use their child's stroller to run people outa the way...lol happens at malls and flea markets the worst. I always feel sorry for the child that's being used in that manner!

I'm not going to answer your question as to whether or not you were rude. That is for you and the other parties effected to determine. I might suggest that you could have asked softly the first time, then more loudly, if necessary, the second time. Having to repeat the two words "excuse me" isn't all that big an inconvenience really. But as you say, there is more than one side to a story. Only someone present when it happened could hear whatever tone of voice you used and determine if you were being rude or not.

Unfortunately I see rudeness in many places these days. I think it is a sign of the times, and that does make me concerned. I see it in the supermarket, I see it in parking lots, on the roads, both driving and as a pedestrian. Everywhere.

 

I have rarely seen overtly rude behavior on my cruises, yes some, like buffet line cutters, elevator chargers etc, but still not a lot of it, even on my short 5 day cruise, it was not bad. Not saying it doesn't happen, just that I have probably been lucky, and might have to do with the time of year that I usually cruise also.

 

But yes, I agree with you OP, I hate seeing rudeness however it happens, but I especially hate it when cruisers are being rude to the crew. These crew members have very hard jobs, but always seem to be able to keep a smile on their face, and seem genuinely to want you to have the best cruise ever.

 

But rude, and "me first", "me the most", "my vacation" etc seems to be a growing phenomenon.

 

 

I have been on 9 carnival cruises and 1 RCI (allure) I don't recall even 1 instance of bad behavior, but then again, I don't go looking for it either.

 

I don't need to "prove" a point to anyone nor feel I need to respond to people that aren't kind. Easy enough to enjoy my vacation and ignore anything I don't enjoy.

 

A lot of life is a matter of perspective, if there is a situation I am uncomfortable with, I simply move along and ignore whatever. I don't let things bother me. Makes life a whole lot easier...and happier.

The worst behavior was on Splendor out of New York City a few years ago. A young woman was dancing and seducing a young man on the dance floor of the disco. The young man evidently responded to the seduction and the family of the young girl beat the young man up. Security in the disco was useless.

Also on this same Splendor cruise out of New York City, a family group (about 15-20) decided to have a family get together in the evening in the hallway right outside of their cabins which just happened to be by my cabin. They were having some type of prayer get together with their babies in diapers crawling on the dirty carpeted hallway floors. To get by them you had to walk around the babies and the family could care less. Strange behavior especially with so many other better locations on the ship they could go to hold this family get together.

I've been on 9 Carnival cruises. Only a couple of examples of poor behaviors have stood out to me. I tend to forget small behaviors like line cutting or "me first" attitudes quickly. I'm a born & raised downstate NYer. That stuff is business as usual to us;););).

 

On our last cruise we were walking down the hall to our room. I fell behind my boyfriend & he looked over his shoulder to check for me while walking & accidentally elbowed a lady in the hall. He immediately stopped & apologized stating it was his fault. Her response was to curse at him & purposely elbow him back hard. She then yelled at me to "keep him in check". Uncalled for behavior. She was not at all hurt & it was an accident.

 

One cruise there was a very large travel group with us. While several members were perfectly pleasant, some were not. I was catcalled repeatedly in front of my children & not with the use of any language that was appropriate in the presence of children. They pushed people out of the way. Climbed on tables. They were excessively loud. There were violent fights resulting in damage to the ship. I spoke to another mom who said a woman took her top of on a tender boat & started dancing. I've never seen so much security presence on a cruise. The brig was basically full when we got back to Miami from what we heard from the staff. It's the passengers not the cruiseline.

People not letting you get off the elevator or stopping to talk right in the middle of the main walkway is my pet peeve. I hate it! WHY are you standing where everyone is trying to walk????

 

Haha, this bothers me in grocery stores, malls, wherever.......I don't know if people feel entitled or what, but I get to the point where I want to push and shove and my mom taught me better so I remove myself from the situation ASAP. It's just human nature I guess, a bit of "the world revolves around ME" kind of attitude. :cool:

Try a different cruise line ..... it's Carnival. I don't care what anyone says, the biggest amount of human trash is found on Carnival. Do I care? No, not really. Will I continue to sail Carnival? Yes ..... We sailed the new MSC Seaside three weeks ago and fellow passengers acted civil, kind, and polite. The difference in passenger behavior was 180 from our Vista cruise last year. Trailer trash ........ no, I never saw any of the behavior or acts that I've seen on CCL on MSC, Holland, NCL, Princess, or Royal ...... I can't tell you how many goons I wanted to push over the railings on our Carnival cruises. Hopefully the element is better on the Panorama out of Long Beach for us than the Vista.

 

Do a simple search on YouTube and you'll find the idiots and the boors are well represented on most cruise lines.

You can find people never cruise before and the uppity who think they own the ship.

People who never cruise before just can afford to cruise and make themselves look crazy and mess it up for others.

The uppity people like to bragg on the other cruise lines they been on but always come back to Carnival cause that's all they can afford.

Then you have the drunks (Men & Women) Get them to sing!!! LMAO They get a NEW credit card and MAXX it out just drinking!!

To start off I have to give thanks to the entire staff on the Triumph. This was my second cruise on the Triumph and I have never had a bad experience. They do an excellent job on making sure everyone is taken care of and always professional and extremely nice. Our waiter at dinner, Rodolpho -?, had us laughing every night and made sure our huge crew was taken care of.

Now that being said, I have never met so may rude and thankless people in my entire life. People would run into you as if you weren't there, shove their way thru or push you out of the way, tell off the staff if something wasn't going their way or fast enough. We tried to get into a hot tub and had to wait for 5 little kids with life jackets on playing and splashing around to get out. They were finally ran out by a group that was tired of waiting to sit and relax. I witnessed adults being kicked out of the pool for their stupid behavior, a guy standing in the bar, outside the night club in nothing but a pair of swim trunks yelling and hollering at people as they walked by and later trying to fight with others. This is only a fraction of what o witnessed. I felt so sorry for the staff and totally embarrassed to be around some of these people. I do not consider my self judgmental and am very easy going as I deal with much worse behaviors in my profession, but some people on this cruise made my clients look like Angel's!

My hat goes off to The entire crew of the Triumph as no matter what people said or did to them they were always polite and went out of their way to make these people happy. Never the less we very much enjoyed our cruise and can't wait to cruise again. Thank you Carnival for a great family vacation!

Cruises are no different then any area where there are a lot of people, some are nice, some aren't!

That's why we always call our presence in large crowds, whether it's on a cruise, at the airport, in a mall, etc., 'We're at the ZOO! ';)

Out of the thousands of passengers I have cruised with on Carnival, I can count on one hand how many I wish weren't there. Not bad odds are all.

 

The truth is, people are jerks everywhere you go. NCL and Royal aren't going to magically be free of jerks, and they are only exclusive to Carnival. Society has little to no consequence to jerks, so why would they stop? They are allowed to treat employees like garbage everywhere, and employees have to smile and do whatever they want.

 

Yes, there are jerks everywhere, but I have to agree with another post that there seem to be a much greater number of "trashy jerks" on Carnival than on Royal, Celebrity, etc.. We met some lovely, friendly people on Carnival as well, but the jerks were numerous. Just my observation. :)

I live in New Orleans. And as a resident, I don't visit the touristy areas anymore because of how tourists act in our city. Most tourists come in with the attitude that "anything goes" in New Orleans. That is only true on Bourbon St. where residents will happily take your money if you are looking for that type experience. And when a tourist thinks they are being ripped off, I hope they a have learned their lesson. Because natives avoid Bourbon St.! It's the difference between being a Carnie and going to a carnival.

 

Anyway, I have taken trips out of New Orleans frequently on different Carnival Cruise ships. Each has provided excellent service. And the guests are always a mixed bag. My one issue with the Triumph is the lack of a Serenity deck. I don't like having to deal with other people's kids.

Just off the Glory (April 21 - 28) and we were in a suite. Can't remember the last time we heard so many people slamming cabin doors....at 3 o'clock in the morning!!!!!

 

Wouldn't most people figure out after the first time the door slams that they need to help prevent it from slamming closed???

 

And one jerk walked up and down the passageway at 2 a.m. with his radio/phone blaring......really????

 

We were sitting in the bar in the lounge waiting on the comedy show and had a great view...until Mr. and Mrs. Rude walked in and proceeded to stand against a pole in the back, blocking our view. When I tapped the guy on the shoulder and told him he just stood in front of my wife, he just shrugged his shoulders and said there was no room. I told him that was his problem, since we made a point to get there early for a good seat. Then he feigned not understanding English. What a jerk.

AMEN, one of those "scooters" ran over my foot and then she glared at me for her inconvenience. I was seated near the main pool and she decided to head on through, I had no time to move. Those scooters are heavy believe me.

Our 33rd cruise on Carnival is coming up this week. We have found the worst behaving people of all ages tend to be on the shorter cruises. Not sure if there is a correlation between cheaper cruises and more rude people, just our observation. We prefer longer cruises on HAL and Carnival because there are fewer kids and those on the longer cruises, 7-10 days, tend to be better behaved. Again, just our observation after cruising since 1996. I spend at sea days and evenings in the casinos so I do not attend shows or spend time in ship bars or lounging by the pools during the day. The rude behavior we do see is in the Lido buffet, general getting around the ship with people shoving us to get in the elevators, for example. We have seen rude and mean people on HAL who feel they are entitled and treat the crew as peasants. I am retired and worked in local, county and state government my whole career and believe me, there are no meaner people than constituents who constantly complained about something and always ended it with "I pay your salary."

We've said with Royal Caribbean twice and witnessed the same rudeness towards crew members. In fact, it was much worse. That's one reason that we won't sail with them again.
