From the cow kings to an Empress, Norton goes on a little Sojourn

Recommended Posts

Emperor Norton, I am getting a vibe which tells me that this has not been your best cruise. Incredible that even though you all have endured dust and noise for the deck repair, the repaired deck is failing.

How is the wifi aboard? Shoddy as reported elsewhere here? Improved? Basically usable or frustrating? Will be on Sojourn later this summer and wondering whether to purchase or just unplug and rely on LTE when in ports. Thanks in advance.

We were on Sojourn in February/March and the wifi was awful. I needed to download a book. It was only 26Mb which is not a lot and even with slow wifi you would expect it to download in a few minutes. Anyway I tried and tried and could not get it to do anything. So when we were docked in Durban, we took the shuttle bus to a shopping centre which had free wifi and it downloaded in less than 10 seconds.

So, to cut a long story short .... if you have free/included wifi then it will be basically usable but only just. If you are paying for minutes then I would be looking for another solution.

Thanks. I like to download podcasts usually in the 25-50mb size. Sounds like that's a non-starter at sea. Was hoping perhaps wifi might have improved more recently, but sadly no. Guess I'll have to muddle through on fine scenery, food and drink... #firstworldproblems

I couldn’t upload 6-8 second movies without issues (eg had to wait for land) and even with free it was too slow for most apps.

Have any of you used the PressReader app to read their favorite newspaper. DH loves the WSJ and normally buys internet time to download it each day. That seems pointless on this ship. I saw the following on the Seabourn website:

“For guests that sail aboard Seabourn Odyssey, Seabourn Sojourn or Seabourn Quest, we are delighted to offer the option of having your favorite newspaper delivered right to your mobile smartphone or tablet daily, without needing to access the Internet. The ships' local mobile network will automatically supply a selection of the most popular newspapers, and you can request others from a list of over 2,500 available while on board.” It then mentions going to PressReader.com.

Does it work? Can your iPad in your room pick it up?

Some info that may be helpful. There is a Pressreader app for iPhone/iPad in the App store and for Android devices in the Play Store. Registration is free. Content is not free BUT if you're accessing through a "sponsored hotspot" content IS free:

"We’ll let you know when you enter one of our sponsored HotSpot locations. You’re welcome. Once you’re in, you’ll get complimentary access to all the content on PressReader, from businesses that really love you. If you download an issue using the PressReader app, it’s yours to keep."

Seabourn ship locations DO come up as sponsored hotspots, so using the Pressreader app on board should allow access to content. Of course, presumably speed of access will still be limited by the slow Seabourn wifi. Will be interested in hearing how this works in practice onboard.

Any word on the couple who were downloaded, with police escort, in Kodiak? Heard they were the ones who had the fight in the Observation Lounge.

Man that threw punch dispatched in Kodiak, along with wife. That's SOP, the offender goes along with anyone else in same cabin. A costly place to get tossed.

There are of course iPads with newspapers already loaded available in the square to read free of charge which I'm sure you are already aware of.

It sounds more and more as if there might be a full length book to be written about this particular sojourn.

Although we do now qualify for our printed newspaper on board, the iPads in the Square are, to me, a satisfactory way to read your papers, obviously at no extra charge.

We also qualify for the printed newspaper but don't take it. It seems like such a waste of paper and, as you say, the Ipad works well.

This will be our first trip with Seabourn, so everything is new. Thank you.

Same and thank you ASH. I gather you can this same content anywhere onboard with the Pressreader app on your personal device. From Seabourn:

Via a free mobile application available from PressReader.com, newspapers are supplied in their entirety, including all printed sections and even advertising. Seabourn ships will download the requested content daily, and store it on the ships' local network, so guests can access their choice without going on line. If the app is downloaded in advance, guests will automatically be able to access the news of their choice.

To download the app onto a mobile device before a cruise, simply visit

Cold and wet this morning. We’re trailing a massive Princess thing. Hopefully we won’t be in Victoria at the same time they are. f066f77dd108da9eb958f01e181c238a.jpg

Regurgitation collection devices have been deployed. Better safe than sorry on those I guess.

Sorry about your reservation, was it for the Grill? If I had one I would gift it to you. We plan to go to the Alaskan dinner in the Collonade. Last nights rib eye dinner there was one of the best aboard. The “Unexpected Boys” show last night was as great as the first so I hope you were able to enjoy it. They also did a show for the crew after ours, hope Sophie schedules them again tomorrow.

Sorry for me that was the worst TK/colonnade dinners. Already missing TKs chef. Alaska in Colonnade might be forced as my grill reservation was cancelled for more important people it seems.

I was howled down by the cheerleaders when I dared to suggest that standards were slipping but this cruise has done nothing to change my mind. Service in all the restaurants has been inconsistent at best and I’m fed up with asking for my wine glass to be refilled. Nobody notices it’s empty. Lots of little things are happening that never used to happen and different departments are not communicating with each other.

Last year the ship went to Glacier Bay on the re-positioning cruise. Hard to get permits as they are strictly limited.

Looks like Sojourn was scheduled to be there May 29. Perhaps the weather delay pre empted that.

Cruising Hubbard today (was supposed to be Glacier bay - maybe next year Seabourn will pony up for the permits). Colonnade packed early this morning.
