Does anyone remember a drink called the Singapore Sling?  As I recall, I thought they were delicious.  I asked DW but she said all she remembers from her college days waitress job is that its a woman's drink...  I'm thinking what I do in the privacy of my own home is up to me 🙂

I do remember Singapore Slings Que!  Pretty but a tad too sweet for my liking!  To be fair,  the gents in my company during those years were chugging beer! 😁

First one was on Singapore Airlines flying out to Singapore. Nice (and free). Next few were at Raffles Bar (where it was invented), not as good as SA and bl**dy expensive (about 30 Singapore dollars a drink).

Unprepared, will not be able to report back until I select a good recipe & do a bit of shopping

I've got the gin (Bombay) & soda water (Icelandic) on-hand but not much else, sounds like a Friday night project, the whole bitters thing can be confusing, maybe requires some taste testing before Friday?

Hey WWW!  So, not too long ago, I realized I have no clue what Plato, Socrates etc were all about.  So I took an online course from Penn and was totally wowed!

Your quote is beautiful.  Yes, not an act, but who we really are 🙂 I think its right here at the cooler.

A few words from Plato, then

Beautiful! Sitting on my desk is a copy of Proclus' Theology of Plato. When I'm not working (sadly not retired), I reach for this and hope to finish it sometime this year. (Looked unsuccessfully for a toga emoticon 🤓

Wow, please update when you have a chance to read.  I never realized the theological aspects of the Athenian civilization till I did my study. 

Retirement is a good place to be, but not till you're ready for it, I think.  I took up a 2nd career as a high school science teacher cause I retired from engineering too early 🙂

Plymouth is definitely tasty. Have gone through a few bottles ourselves... Brokers is our go-to London Dry Gin that we enjoy. But finding the right gin is only half of the fun. Then you get to pair it with the right tonic, and the right garnish! We keep the local distributor of Fever Tree tonics in business. Brokers goes well with plain Indian tonic in the summer but in the winter it's great with aromatic tonic. Add a piece of cinnamon stick or some allspice berries, and it's a great holiday spritz.

 

We like to keep a number of different gins on hand so we can mix it up. Empress 1908 and Magellan are favorites, especially good with elderflower tonic. I like Tanqueray No. 10 with Mediterranean tonic - in fact, I like it better than plain Tanqueray. Hendrick's Midsummer Solstice, with Mediterranean tonic and a sprig of fresh rosemary, is great during those long summer nights. 

 

We recently tried a French gin called G'vine, made from grapes, which is very nice. And on occasion we get an Italian one called Malfy, which comes in several different flavors. Their blood orange flavored gin, mixed with Mediterranean tonic, is a fair approximation of an Aperol spritz.

 

Nolet's Silver is another one that we have on occasion - the flavor profile is fairly unique. I add a whole raspberry for a treat at the bottom of the glass, and mix it with light tonic so as to let the subtle flavors of the gin express themselves.

 

OK, enough gin talk. Friday can't come soon enough!

 

PS - don't worry about getting too serious for the Cooler. We talk about anything and everything. Feel free to talk about Aristotle as much as you'd like!

All stores around here (and most other places) seem to be sold out of Hendrick's Midsummer Solstice Gin.  Last year it did not seem to be seasonal; maybe we promoted it too much on the Cooler?

Yes please!  The Cooler folks are quite intelligent and enjoy philosophical discussions even when we have enjoyed the odd tipple.   Maybe the even tipples as well. 😁

Our experience as well.But as we were then penny pinching Aussies it was only 1 at the Long Bar.As you say too bl**dy expensive.

 

Now a little affluent I am looking forward to a few more first in the TPR in Changi and then in the F cabin of SQ as we wing our way to Frankfurt.

We have the dubious honour of being ejected from Raffles before getting the chance to be ripped off for a Singapore Sling. They do, however, make very good ones on Silversea. 

 

Why were we thrown out? Actually, no idea. Went into the bar and were asked if we were hotel residents. We said no and we're then invited not only to leave the bar but we're escorted to the exit. Can't explain it.

You did not miss a thing being thrown out of Raffles.  The version now served, at ludicrous cost for tourists, is pre-mixed. 

 

We had Sunday 'curry tiffin' some years ago, with expat friends, and the Slings they made for us in the restaurant were genuine ; not to my taste, as they are quite sweet,    Lots of recipes on Google.  The curry was very much an Anglicised version (sp?) , pleasant but unauthentic.

 

P.S.  Please keep those lovely lab. pics. coming now and again.
