Civitavecchia Options

Hello.  We've been to Rome enough that we'd like to try something different during this summer's stop at C.  Is anyone aware of any good options fairly locally, either by cab or rental car?  Any special places worth seeing nearby?  Thanks.

I was going to suggest Civita de Bagnoregio and Orvieto as well.  We did those last summer.  It was my mother's favorite stop.  It is still a bit of a drive, but it's all countryside, no traffic, and a nice break from cities.

The Etruscan necropolis in Tarquinia is pretty close by and can be reached by local bus or train. The tombs are extraordinary, with vivid paintings, and almost all of them are now open to the public. I would couple this with a visit to the fantastic Etruscan museum very nearby but in the town of Tarquinia.

We had 2 days in Civitavecchia last July. The first day we walked around the town - there’s just about enough to see in a day. We especially liked the market. The second day we caught the local bus to Tarquinia which we loved. We didn’t go to see the tombs because it was a very hot day, but the museum was wonderful and had lots of stone sarcophagi and examples of how the tombs look. The town itself is beautiful - we had a great day there. The only snag about getting the local bus is that you have to buy tickets before you get on the bus. There’s a little supermarket next to the bus stop that sells them, but he had run out of the tickets, so we ended up going to the train station to buy them!

You can buy the ticket onboard the Cotral bus to Civitavecchia but you want to avoid this if at all possible because of the upcharge.

 

The pre-purchased ticket price is 1,30 each way between Civitavecchia and Tarquinia, if you buy the ticket on board the fare is 7 euro.

The stop in Tarquinia, Barriera San Giusto, is 100 meters (350') from the museum.   From the museum to the necropolis is 1.2 km (three quarters of a mile).

The Cotral stop in Civitavecchia for the bus to Tarquinia is on Via XVI Settembre, just before the intersection of Via Cadorna.  It's 160 meters (one-tenth of a mile) from the free port bus drop off point at Largo della Pace.  You can purchase the bus ticket at one of the shops you'll pass on Via XVI Settembre as you make the short walk to the bus stop.

We had also been to Rome the year before for a 5 day pre cruise so we wanted to try and stay local and find something different to do with a day in Civitavecchia. We ended up deciding on the Ficoncella Thermal Baths

We also enjoyed the city of Viterbo and the nearby gardens at Villa Lante or the stunning Villa Farnese.  Orvieto is definitely worth a visit as is Tarquinia and the Etruscan museum and necropolis.  Depends how far you want to go and if you want to rent a car.  We also liked Tuscania,  and  seafood lunch  in Orbetello.

With a rental car you have lots of options.  Some have already been posted.  But if you have a long port day you might want to consider driving as far as Tivoli..which has some very nice tour options.

How about renting a car and driving south about an hour to Ostia Antica?  It is similar to Pompeii with gorgeous mosaics and so much to see.

My suggestion as well, amazing places, we have been a few times and are planning to return in August.
