Lanyard

So a strange question. If I bring a lanyard, without a plastic holder, does the pursers desk have a hole puncher? Or, I guess a better question, Carnival uses cards with touch technology meaning they don’t have a swipe on the back, correct? So if I get a lanyard with a plastic holder, I don’t have to worry about taking my card out of it all the time, right?

The S&S card comes with a hole punched in it. They are not touch technology cards.

The only time they are touch technology  (at least on the Horizon) are to unlock your cabin door.  You just touch your card to the pad on the door and it unlocks it.

I have never gotten one with the hole punched in the S&S card that I can remember but Guest Services will punch a hole.  Hoping this S&S with hole in it is now the standard.

I use to bring my own hole punch, but I think Carnival saw great value in selling Carnival lanyards, so all cards now come with a hole already punched in them.

They still have the free ones from the Casino? I have about 20 kicking around the house, but will have to remember to bring some if they arent free anymore.

I long ago puchased a landyard with a plastic envelope in gift shop and put card in it and keep it in my pocket. When leaving the boat I put my DL with it and have them together for returning. Just remember to keep taking the lanyard with you. You can get the same thing off the boat before hand, probably less expensive

We keep our S&S and Driver's Licenses (both punched) on a lanyard and keep that generally inside our shirts.
The lanyard has a safety breakaway feature which prevents a strangling accident if caught on something while we do all the active stuff.

For me...  it is a peace of mine thing....  If I lose my wallet or get robbed, I have my ID and card to get back in port and on the ship.

On board, I never have to worry about carrying anything else.

I assume you haven’t cruised on Carnival in awhile. I just looked at my last 23 S&S cards and all of them have a hole punched in them. I don’t know about cards on cruises before that because I didn’t save cards when I first started cruising.

All S&S cards I have received recently have been swipe with mag strip on back, not RFID.

Last cruise was Dec 2018 on Sunshine.

Are the cards now switching to RFID, no mag strip on back?

Just got off the Horizon and the cards still have the magnetic strip on the back.  No RFID.  To unlock your cabin door, you just hold your card on the pad on the door and it unlocks it.

RFID and Magstripe technologies are not mutually exclusive (i.e. your S&S card can have both)....

The Horizon S&S cards do have RFID. That's how the door mechanism operates. 😉

Found it hard to find anyone in casino on embarkation. I take my own lanyard I got from Carnival many years ago.

I'll bring a few past ones just in case. The kids use them for necklaces/slingshots currently.

On the Horizon, the lanyards were draped over the back of one of the chairs on the first night.

So I know which lanyards to bring, do they have a normal circular hole punch or a wider slot-like hole?    Grazie!

The regular circular hole.

You may and I emphasize may, have to take it out of the holder for them to scan the card in the shops if you purchase something.  Any time we bought something, they had to scan the card and I don't think it would fit in the computer slot if it was in a holder.

Indeed - if you simply hold the card near something, no swiping in a slot, it is RFID (or magic!).

As mentioned, it appears the RFID element is used for your cabin door only - all other uses would require removing the card from the lanyard so it can be swiped.

I wonder if the RFID upgrade is something Carnival plans for future dry-dock upgrades, or will be new-ship-builds only?

The last several cruises, they already had punched a hole (round) in the card.  Prior to that, we had the casino cashier do it.  They usually weren't there at embarkation, but once the casino opened, they were there.  We use a clip lanyard without the card sleeve because we wear them in the pool/hot tub.

DW and I have Carnival lanyards we received from a Behind the Fun tour. Cards now come with a hole pre-punched.

And we don't carry our drivers licenses when we get off ship, but we do use passports which we carry in water-proof envelopes.

I work with RFID technology. Cards can have RFID, chip, and MagStripe technology all-in-one (i.e.: newest credit card formats).

Newer Carnival ships are using RFID technology (like newer hotels) for room access. But POS (registers) still use MagStripe readers.

Yeah, other than not needing to swipe it for the cabin doors on Horizon, everything else still needs to be swiped. OP, if you choose that style of lanyard, I imagine you'll be taking it out of the plastic sleeve often. Using the S&S kiosk, Guest Services often swipe it for things, bars, coffee shop, arcade, etc. etc. Just keep that in mind.

We bought a set of waterproof pouches w/ lanyards a few years ago. Our intention was to use them for our phones or whatever when we knew we'd be around water. Turns out, the lanyards that came with them work great for the S&S cards because they have a quick-release clip near the end. I can simply unclip the card without taking the whole lanyard off from around my neck. So handy.
