How safe are our wharves?

Recommended Posts

Good question. Sydney's Circular Quay and Auckland's Princes Wharf both share waterways with ferry operations. Imagine the chaos if a ship broke free from either of those wharves. 😂 Especially bigger and bigger ships visiting our region. Ovation of the Seas towers over Circular Quay and the Rocks.

Just thinking about this

We were on MSCs Fantasia a couple of weeks after this happened at Palma de Majorca. The dent from the bollard was still on the bow so its not only New Zealand who have trouble with wind at the wrong time

Watch the video clip

Also this was the last big cruise ship we have been on. Too many people

Sticking with the Seabourn size ships now days

We were actually at the christening of The Encore at Singapore as we were sailing on The Sojourn and Seabourn had both ships there. Instead of rent a mob for the christening we were invited to make the crowd look large The Encore sailed to NZ and we headed to China. Have been on the Encore twice since then. Do prefer the Sojourn and The Quest over The Encore though. We were on The Quest to Antarctica in Seabourns early days of going there which sold us on Seabourn for cruising. Maybe back on The Encore when it comes down this way next year

It should not matter how safe the wharfs are. The ship should have crew on the bridge 24/7 regardless if it is in port or not and a crew on standby to cut the lines should the ship come lose of the wharf collapse. The ship should have enough power ready to manoeuvre at moments notice for such events. At least this is how it was meant to be in the Navy.
