phabric Posted June 1, 2019 #1 Share Posted June 1, 2019 I am trying to purchase an internet package for 10 yr old granddaughter so she talk/email to her parents while on the Symphony. i am not sure what is the difference between Voom and Voom, Surf and Stream? i can purchase Soda package and Voom Voom, Surf and Stream Soda package It is cheaper to purchase Soda package & Voom for 1 device. Will she been able to talk/email with the soda and Voom package? Or is better to purchase separately the soda package and Voom, Surf and Stream? PigsCanFly Posted June 1, 2019 #2 Share Posted June 1, 2019 We have had the soda and voom package on several cruises, and our son (25 yo) has had plenty of internet access. It should be more than sufficient for your Granddaughter. Enjoy your multi-generation cruise.
mac1_131 Posted June 1, 2019 #3 Share Posted June 1, 2019 Difference is bandwidth (speed) is capped on regular Voom.I've found it is still fast enough for Skype, Hangouts dialer, etc to make VoIP phone calls.I think streaming video is really where you need the faster one. I've streamed live video with just Surf no problem in the Caribbean (most recently on Oasis in 2017). Caveat: My experience in no way guarantees future success.

Both Surf and Stream are capped - the main ship O3B connection is capable of over 100Mbps but Surf is capped at about .5Mbps while Stream at about 4Mbps. phabric Posted June 1, 2019 Author #7 Share Posted June 1, 2019 So Voom would be good for Skype/FaceTime/emails/games?

Rare BirdTravels Posted June 1, 2019 #9 Share Posted June 1, 2019 We have had o.k. success with the Voom and Soda package. Bandwidth is totally dependent upon what the other 6000 passengers are doing on wifi when you want to use it. Sometimes great. Sometimes barely usable. fredflint Posted June 1, 2019 #10 Share Posted June 1, 2019 Well actually making a VOIP call with no video is pretty low bandwidth it is the latency (lag) that you need to be concerned about. VOIP calls should be 64K or less. netflix can buffer you conversation cannot.

Rare OCSC Mike Posted June 1, 2019 #12 Share Posted June 1, 2019 I've also had no problem with Facetime using just Surf. Same disclaimer as above.
