sdel65 Posted June 15, 2019 #1 Share Posted June 15, 2019 Hello Does anyone known how to communicate between the passengers on the Celebrity Summit ship? I am travelling with my 16 years old daughter and am pretty sure that she won't be around me all the time just during the dinner or in port. I am trying to find a best way how to communicate with her. Is it a matter of 2 internet packages for 2 devices? Or there is any cheaper option available? I know that there is Celebrity app, but from my experience this app shows calendar of events, or what is happening on the ship, my account, etc.. I don't believe that it would support the free communication between the ship passengers. Any information is appreciated! Thank you in advance
Denny01 Posted June 15, 2019 #2 Share Posted June 15, 2019 The App also has texting between passengers. It was a bit hit/miss on Edge in March, but I was told it has improved. Don’t know for sure. Normal phone Texting costs about $0.50 on most phone systems so that might help some. Seen people try the handhelds and I don’t recommend those at all. Rare chemmo Posted June 15, 2019 #3 Share Posted June 15, 2019 In addition to technology ‘Post it’ notes are useful! Have a set place in the room where messages are to be left. Also you can leave messages on the room phones.

From what I have read, there's no alert when you receive a message, so you need to check your phone periodically. The HAL app works the same way, and we found it useful if we were carrying our phones. We'll be on the Summit in September, our first experience with the Celebrity app. [I hope none of these apps is ever developed to ring when there's a message. Maybe a vibrate alert.] 3 hours ago, chemmo said: In addition to technology ‘Post it’ notes are useful! Have a set place in the room where messages are to be left. LA_CA_GAL Posted June 15, 2019 #6 Share Posted June 15, 2019 Agree on designated meet up times and places. Example 2:00 PM meet at the pool bar. 9:30 PM meet at the casino.

Rare cruisestitch Posted June 15, 2019 #8 Share Posted June 15, 2019 That’s an expensive solution! There are lots of low tech and cheap options.
sdel65 Posted June 15, 2019 Author #9 Share Posted June 15, 2019 You are absolutely correct . Exactly the reason I'm trying to figure out the best way to communicate with my daughter without significant price to pay for 2 devices
Fjcpooh17 Posted June 15, 2019 #10 Share Posted June 15, 2019 When are kids were younger we purchased some cheap two way radios and they worked fine for us on the ships.
bEwAbG Posted June 15, 2019 #11 Share Posted June 15, 2019 Except everyone hates the two way radios because people shout into them & there is that annoying chirp they do

Plenty of threads here on CC about how horribly annoying walkie-talkies are. And also that they don’t work all that well on ships (which is probably why people are typically screaming “can you hear me?” into them). Example 2:00 PM meet at the pool bar. 9:30 PM meet at the casino. This sounds a lot like how we did it with our kids, except it was usually the same bar and time and we always had dinner together. They were about the same age as your daughter is now. Besides designated times and locations to meet, we had dry erase markers we used on the mirror in the room to help with communication. When one read the others message, they would wipe it off and leave theirs. We would all wake up about the same time (four in one room) and discuss what our plans were for the day. Since we were having dinner together, my DW and I would get ready for dinner first and then the kids would. At that time I would wipe the mirror clean as to not add to the room attendants job. That said, the above is going to depend on how well you both work with it. Oh, and my DW and I would take a stroll around the ship everyday to basically spy on them and make sure they were NOT acting like one of "those" kids. When they would see us, they woud catch us up on their day and we would be on our way. Plus they knew we were still keeping an eye on them. 😉 I hope you two have a wonderful time. My wife and daughter (22 at the time) did a cruise two years ago and they absolutely loved it. Edited June 15, 2019 by Mike981
GastroGnome Posted June 15, 2019 #14 Share Posted June 15, 2019 We used the post in note method when DD was younger. It only didn't work the once when she failed to comply with curfew and we had to hunt her out - but it only happened once! (and in fairness a note would have made no difference to that situation!). alisatj Posted June 17, 2019 #15 Share Posted June 17, 2019 Just off Summit today...we used the celebrity app to communicate with our teen daughters. You do all have to have the app open all the time to receive notifications. But as long as it was open, my phone (an android) notified me the same way I receive regular text notifications (sound/vibrate/whatever).

capsplace Posted June 17, 2019 #18 Share Posted June 17, 2019 Whats App might work. We used that a few cruises back with some friends, but we all had internet on board.
bEwAbG Posted June 17, 2019 #19 Share Posted June 17, 2019 WhatsApp will only work if you have a paid WiFi connection to use. The OP was asking about free tools.
