Oompa Posted July 21, 2019 #1 Share Posted July 21, 2019 Are there other options to transferring from Anchorage to Whittier besides the offered Princess shuttle for $54 per person?
Rare Jeter02 Posted July 21, 2019 #2 Share Posted July 21, 2019 For more money you can take the train into whitier. Fir me, the bus transfer was easy and we'll organized. A majority of the passengers take the bus or the train.
WatchHill Posted July 21, 2019 #3 Share Posted July 21, 2019 We booked the train, not through Princess, though Princess paying passengers were on the same scheduled run. The AK RR station has a small gift ship and facilities. Once you check in, you drop your luggage in a secured area and its transported to the ship via truck. The train was a very pleasant ride, loved entering the tunnel to darkness and coming out to see our ship. Rare cruisequeen4ever Posted July 21, 2019 #4 Share Posted July 21, 2019 (edited) Take the Alaska Railroad train; it’s a more beautiful, comfortable option! It is more expensive but worth it. I believe it arrives around 12:15 PM so an optimal time to check in. There are independent transfer companies, but I was surprised at how much they’ve raised their rates over the years to the point that I’d rather just pay Princess for peace of mind. Colo Cruiser Posted July 21, 2019 #5 Share Posted July 21, 2019 Take the train!!! You give them your luggage before leaving Anchorage and don't see it again until it arrives in your cabin. It is an awesome ride and pulls up right next to the ship/terminal. http://www.alaskarailroad.com
waltd Posted July 21, 2019 #6 Share Posted July 21, 2019 I think the Princess transfer is probably the least expensive way to get to the ship if you are trying to save money..
Rare azbirdmom Posted July 21, 2019 #7 Share Posted July 21, 2019 We have done the train 3 times and it was wonderful. This year we booked independently and took a tour through Anchorage Tours & Transfers https://www.akcruiseshuttle.com/. We used them 8 days ago. They pick up from all Anchorage area hotels and we selected the half day tour which stopped at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. It was a nice way to view animals up close and personal and a bargain cost of $52 per person using the online booking discount (they run specials all the time). The bus had plenty of space for our luggage and carryons. Lots of communication in the days prior to the tour including an email the morning of your tour with a link to the location of the driver so you can track progress. Can't recommend them highly enough!
satxdiver Posted July 21, 2019 #8 Share Posted July 21, 2019 We paid for the ship transfer on the train from Whittier to Anchorage with a choice of leaving the train either at the airport or downtown. The Princess train coaches are very nice and roomy.

Did Princess take care of the luggage once you arrived at the bus and did they put on the ship once you arrived at the port in Whittier??? thanks,

milo696 Posted July 22, 2019 #12 Share Posted July 22, 2019 I second, third, and fourth...take the train. I'll also say book the 26 glacier cruise through phillips and you won't be sorry and makes for a fantastic day. Just walk across the parking lot when the glacier cruise ends, no lines to get on the ship, get on board and your luggage is there waiting..it was great
LessWorkMoreTravel Posted July 22, 2019 #13 Share Posted July 22, 2019 (edited) We just did this and were very pleased. https://alaskacruisetransfer.com/tours/anchorage-whittier-wildlife/ They also have an option without the conservation center stop for $45. We're taking this -- the option w/o the conservation center -- this coming Saturday. Six of us, so we got a group rate of around $40.50. The only disadvantage is that it only runs in the afternoons on Saturday. We'll get to Whittier around 4:30pm. Last year, we had a huge family group cruise, and about 23 folks took this tour with the wildlife stops. They loved it!
