hondo1717 Posted August 7, 2019 #1 Share Posted August 7, 2019 Hello Fellow Cruisers, Have a question that I have not seen before. I am wondering if anyone has an answer. We will be refinancing our home loan and our Loan Company has asked if we could find out if Princess Cruises has a Notary on board their ships. This way we would be able to finalize a refinance while we are cruising... They would take care of everything as far as any expenses... We will more then likely inquire with Princess Cruises, but I thought someone may have an answerers on Cruise critic. Thank you in advance.. bemis12 Posted August 7, 2019 #2 Share Posted August 7, 2019 Notaries are only authorized to notarize documents within their state. What state is your cruise ship going to be in?
Griller Posted August 7, 2019 #3 Share Posted August 7, 2019 (edited) There is no Princess employee notary and no other person who can notarize a document on a Princess ship unless a passenger is onboard who is a notary. A US notary cannot notarise outside the geographical boundaries of the notary's state of commission.so even if there was a notary on board with seal etc he/she couldn't do it unless the ship happened to be docked in his/her state. Chances of that are slim to non existent. And in any case Princess ships are not US registered but British via Bermuda and notaries are pretty much a US thing. You could go to a US Consulate or Embassy and they could do it for you but you can't just turn up without an appointment and there may be a long wait for one, and they charge heavily for it. Best to find another way to handle it. Edited August 7, 2019 by Griller

The Mikado Posted August 7, 2019 #6 Share Posted August 7, 2019 If you have a stateside stop, you could pre-arrange with an escrow or title co. International, I have no clue.

If it's a California Coastal cruise or one with port stops in California you can do it in a port. Otherwise you are out of luck. donaldsc Posted August 7, 2019 #8 Share Posted August 7, 2019 A few years ago, we listed our house for sale shortly before we went on a cruise. Our real estate agent suggested that we give our daughter full power of attorney for any transactions to do with the house sale including accepting an offer. That is what we did. Turned out that we did not sell the place while we were gone but we were covered just in case. Perhaps you can do something similar. DON

DON Of course if you give a Power of Attorney to anyone they can do what they want not necessarily what you wanted and there is not a thing you can do about it afterwards legally. Absolute power can corrupt absolutely...………...
chengkp75 Posted August 7, 2019 #10 Share Posted August 7, 2019 Check with the bank/closing agent to see if a ship's Captain's signature and ship's stamp is acceptable. It has been widely accepted in years past, but banks are getting fussier lately.

Absolute power can corrupt absolutely...………... That is only partially true. A general Power of Attorney can allow for this, but writing a limited POA with strict limits in place only allows your agent to do what you want and or tell them to do. Many lawyers, including military JAGs, will no longer draft a general Power of Attorney for this very reason. For the OP, if you will be cruising to a US State, you can make arrangements with a local when you pull into port. A lot of places there are even notaries who will come to you, for a fee, of course. If your travel plans are international, recommend contacting the local US embassy or consulate prior to sailing to see if they can help you. Potstech Posted August 7, 2019 #12 Share Posted August 7, 2019 How long will you be "cruisin" and can not any of your signatures wait until you return?

Maybe its a a World Cruise ? And the home refinance is to pay for it? Who knows? There was not a lot of detail in the original post, nor needed there to be really, the short answer is that there is no Notary employed onboard by Princess, nor can there be, its not like Princess are trying to save money or anything. Not in this case. For once?
