Rare patrickmoran Posted October 5, 2019 #1 Share Posted October 5, 2019 (edited) While on our cruise in March I want to have lamb for a meal, probably lunch since none of our port calls stay late. We will stop at Dunedin, Akaroa, Wellington, Napier, Tauranga, Auckland, and Bay of Islands. Any recommendations? Thanks Edited October 5, 2019 by patrickmoran

Thanks Lamb is usually served for a evening meal as it’s a heavy meal. for lunch you probably get some in a pub. They usually have plenty of lamb on the ship ,it’s a staple of the locals. But unfortunately I found it not cooked very well on the ship. A little under cooked and chewy.
Rare erewhon Posted October 6, 2019 #3 Share Posted October 6, 2019 Most restaurants will have a lamb option on the menu at lunch time. For instance In Dunedin, opposite the Railway station is the Ironic cafe http://www.Ironiccafebar.nz in the Octagon (upstairs )Bacchus, https://bacchusdunedin.co.nz also in the Octagon CBK https://cbk.nz/Dunedin Suggest you check their menus nearer to your cruise, as menus my change for the summer. It may have been once , but locals almost have to take out a mortgage on the house to buy it these days.

Especially loin chops. We visited some friends in Oklahoma a few years ago and I offered to buy a leg of kiwi lamb. They said you won’t when you see the price. It was $US100
Kiwi Kruzer Posted October 6, 2019 #6 Share Posted October 6, 2019 Your best bet would probably be Auckland as you will be docked downtown in the CBD. A big selection of leading restaurants will be within walking distance. If you google Auckland Restaurants look for Downtown and Viaduct area and most will have menus on line . GUT2407 Posted October 6, 2019 #7 Share Posted October 6, 2019 Maybe it’s time to go back to mutton, lamb prices are crazy at the moment. Used to but a half lamb regularly now I’d need to sell a kidney to afford it.
Rare OzKiwiJJ Posted October 6, 2019 #8 Share Posted October 6, 2019 One of the food highlights of our recent 25 night cruise was indulging in lamb cutlets / rack of lamb a few times for dinner. They are far too expensive to buy at home. Over $50 for a single lamb rack. The lamb on the ship was delicious, beautifully cooked and very tender. How much would a leg of lamb cost at a Sydney supermarket?

Barwick Cruiser Posted October 7, 2019 #16 Share Posted October 7, 2019 Is the lamb served on the ships actually local? I'm thinking the lamb, and most other meats, served on Celebrity ships at least, are all packed frozen from the States. Hopefully I'm wrong... Some specialised meats may come from local sources, but most ships rely on provisions being packed and sent from Miami . We were told that most of the beef is ArgentinIan. Chiliburn Posted October 7, 2019 #20 Share Posted October 7, 2019 Pretty sure the lamb and salmon comes locally. I remember seeing a butcher truck a huge truck of potatoes being loaded in Tauranga.
