Penalties for mobile (cell) phone use and not wearing seatbelts. Many roads have cameras which can detect non compliance. Also, fixed and mobile radar speed cameras are everywhere not just in police Highway Patrol cars. https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/8681611/aussie-drivers-face-harsher-penalties-from-july-1-crackdowns/?utm_source=sfmc&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign= I would add don't hold anything that has the shape of a mobile phone while in the driver's seat. I once picked up something rectangular on the passenger seat while stopped at a light and got a fine for driving with mobile. Luckily it was distinctive enough I could prove it was not a mobile phone and they cancelled the penalty but lesson learnt never touch anything that could be confused with a mobile phone.
Rare Jean C Posted July 2 #8377 Share Posted July 2 I've even seen a report of someone being pinged for using a mobile phone while driving when in fact they were chomping on a chocolate bar 🍫

Blackduck59 Posted July 3 Author #8380 Share Posted July 3 We have mobile phone laws here as well and seatbelts are mandatory in BC and have been for many years. So I think we will be fine with those rules. We still haven't sorted out our phone situation. We will ask our provider if ours are unlocked. Of course we can use them for wifi data but we will need to get an Australian sim card, or more likely just get a prepaid phone or bring one of our old phones and get a local sim card. Whatever we decide it will be put away when we are driving.
Rare MicCanberra Posted July 3 #8381 Share Posted July 3 You can try an e sim, if your phones can take an e sim, then you can keep your number, otherwise you can get a travel sim with a different number once here.

If you bring an old phone make sure it at least supports 4G VoLTE because our 3g network will be shut down by the time you get here. 1
Blackduck59 Posted July 5 Author #8383 Share Posted July 5 So we have booked the Fairmont Vancouver Airport for the night before our flight. We explored several options for getting off our rock and most are quite expensive. First we were going to rent a car and take the ferry over and enjoy the sights a bit. Then the car rental was $600.00, and we still had the ferry fare and evrything else. So then we thought well I'll grit my teeth and fly over. That option was over $900.00, so that was dismissed. In the end we decided to take the bus and splurge on the Fairmont for the night. It seemed a good way to prepare for the long flight ahead.

Bubbeh Posted July 7 #8391 Share Posted July 7 What's going on? I have a problem with notifications. Basically I'm not getting them, any at all. Not getting a daily update or updates for threads I'm supposedly following. Has this happened to anyone before? I've tried going into my followed content and updating the email preferences (not really just make them the same as before) but I'm not confident this will work. Suggestions? Rare LincolnLegend Posted July 8 #8394 Share Posted July 8 @Bubbeh how are you coping with the weather back here, I only went to Bali for 11 nights and have struggled since my return - 29 to 9 degrees in 5 hours was cruel! 2

Rare LincolnLegend Posted July 8 #8397 Share Posted July 8 @Mareblu for us SA Sea-siders it is very much cold enough lol (yes, we have had frosts and been colder but that was inside Adelaide Airport)! It was colder again and raining by the time we flew into Port Lincoln later that evening.

Ugh! It's been a real challenge, I can tell you. Fully back into the groove now even if I am suffering the cold - spent yesterday under a blanket watching telly with a scalf round my neck and a pair of fingerless gloves on. Hard to believe but this time last week we were still in the air with a further hour of flying time ahead of us. Initially, I was busy, busy, busy with shopping (had no food in the place except a packet of rice thins, 4 scotch finger biscuits and a can of baked beans) and washing and just buzzing around like a blow fly in a bottle. Spent almost as much money restocking the pantry and fridge as I did on the month in Bali 😉. Dinner the night we got back was a cup of tea with not quite defrosted milk and two scotch finger bickies each. Anyway, when we got back here to Mandurah it was close to 6pm and we found a letter from Fremantle Hospital with an appointment for Grumpy at a clinic that we've been waiting for more than 12 months. The apt was for noon the next day and there was no way I was gonna let that pass - luckily we got back the day we did or who knows how long we'd have had to wait for the next one. We certainly felt Canberra’s winter when we returned in June from Europe.
