Not sure why this is "hyped" in the media... it was announced weeks ago that they will extend their usual annual work holiday to six weeks.

Extending their regular annual work holiday is not quite the whole picture. They have not paid any of their workers the holiday pay they are entitled to. According to Ship Technology, they expect to pay them later this year. Wages currently owed are over 16 million dollars. So I'll bet the workers aren't yelling hurray over the extension.

That´s not completely correct. The workers did get their regular payment. The annual holiday pay has not been paid yet but will be by the end of August. That is a total of 14 million Euro.

Annual holiday pay is an extra paid usually in July or August (depending when the school summer holidays are in a state). And by far not everybody in Germany does get an annual holiday pay (I don´t).

That they annual holiday pay will be delayed was also announced weeks ago when they announced the extension of the annual work holiday. And all is in agreement with the unions.

BTW, car companies like BMW, VW, Mercedes... here in Germany do usually have a 6 week annual work holiday during summer.

Wrong! Meyer‘s management and the works council agreed on a delay of the holiday payment. And only that! Actually until after the delivery of Iona. And they did because they realize they are all in the same boat. People working at the Meyer‘s Shipyard are pretty loyal to the company - which in turn has earned their loyalty.
