Who in their right mind would buy a ship or cruise line right now when ships can't sail and nobody knows for sure when they can set sail again.  As much as I'd like to be optimistic about the future of cruising,  I have my doubts.

If a Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, or the like were willing to take a gamble, one of them could theoretically own a significant portion of the industry. Even if Carnival Corporation got down to 85 ships, scrap value would only be around $1 billion, possibly much less. Park them in various shuttered cruise ports for long term storage until sailings can resume.

When you can buy them for pennies on the dollar. Carnival likely sold two Fantasy class ships to scrappers for less than $7 million each, or scrap value. They don't have to remain cruise ships. They could be floating hotels. Riverboat casinos. Storage units. You could likely scrap them later for what you paid for them - maybe more.

Then why did Carnival have to SCRAP THEM ?

This industry isn't going anywhere until we either have a vaccine with 100% efficacy or HERD IMMUNITY. And that doesn't appear to be on the horizon. All the politics involved makes me sick.

The move to scrap was a pure financial decision.  They looked at what time it would be til they would re-enter service and their plans for ships.

How often did we sit around scared of the Spanish flu?

It passed, this will too.

The Spanish flu was also in a time where Americans stuck together. Now its each man for him /herself with some of them talking about the Constitution as if they have read it. America is poised for a horrific fall / winter as many refuse to wear a mask.

You lost me at the abrupt left turn at the Constitution.

Absolutely.

Don't expect the irresponsible to take any responsibility - it's not what they do. (You'll find a few of 'em on CC most surely).

The "I, Me, Mine" crowd has killed reopenings across the country. That doesn't even slow them down.

What this means for cruising is grim. Even if all other CDC concerns were addressed, CCL and others would need to require - not recommend or encourage,  but require - masks and distancing. Way too many princesses and whiny "patriot" boys would snivel about it.

When CC members wonder why they can't cruise, their first targets of complaint should be the no-show cruise execs and the "gimme muh rights" crowd that sees public health as a conspiracy.
