Either way, a better photo would be good to help confirm that I've earned the bonus point for that one. 🙂 Does this help ?
bluemarble Posted August 24, 2020 #52 Share Posted August 24, 2020 Just now, Host Hattie said: Does this help ? Yes, that helps quite a bit. And I think it helps narrow down the date the photo was taken. According to Wikipedia, that ship was only named "Mein Schiff" from 15 May 2009 until November 2010 when she was renamed "Mein Schiff 1". Later in 2018 she became Marella Explorer. Assuming they repainted her stern to read "Mein Schiff 1" in November 2010, that means the photo would have to have been taken between May 2009 and November 2010. Am I on to something there? Rare rafinmd Posted August 25, 2020 #60 Share Posted August 25, 2020 Certainly no challenge here but I'll put this up anyway. Since most of my Cunard destinations are either Brooklyn to Southampton I don't really have a lot to contribute: Roy

I took the opportunity to find and read your blog from the Bangkok-Dubai segment of the 2010 QV World Voyage that you took. I presume this photo is from that voyage. Roy I hear you. The Cruise Critic search functionality rarely finds anything for me that's over a year or two old. To find older threads I try a google search that includes "site:boards.cruisecritic.com". Here's my photo contribution for today. This is stretching the rules to the limit since there is very little of the ship showing, but hey, I'm running low on photos of ships in port. Those are QV balconies at the right of the picture. I don't think it will be too difficult to identify the location from what's shown of the port facilities, so where in the world is QV in this shot? I had pretty much narrowed it down to the Caribbean anyway (after ruling out the Canary Islands). But then I found an old post that mentions you did the QM2 Christmas cruise in 2009 which falls within the time frame that Mein Schiff was operating under that name. That doesn't narrow things down a whole lot since there were so many ports on that cruise. But unless there were any port substitutions, that means it should be one of these islands. Grand Turk Tortola Curacao Grenada Barbados St Lucia Dominica St Kitts St Thomas I also found a TUI press release about Mein Schiff that says she would be doing Caribbean itineraries from November 2009 to March 2010 including calls at the following islands. Grenada Barbados St Lucia Antigua Martinique Dominica St Maarten Guadeloupe So far I've looked at quite a few photos of all those islands (concentrating on the islands on both of those itineraries) to no avail trying to match that scenery, but I'll give it a go for a little while longer until I give up. Of course if anyone else recognizes this specific Caribbean beach, by all means please jump right in any time. By the way, thanks for starting this game to divert us from all the other distractions, both cruise-related and otherwise. Redrobo Posted August 25, 2020 #67 Share Posted August 25, 2020 (edited) This was taken 16 November 2007. We were on a Royal Caribbean Serenade of the Seas, put to shame in the Fog horn battle. It was our last port of call before returning to San Juan. Edited August 25, 2020 by Redrobo
Host Hattie Posted August 25, 2020 Author #68 Share Posted August 25, 2020 @bluemarble good detective work so far, it's one of the islands on your list. I think there was an itinerary change as we called at St Maarten.

I wouldn't have recognized the location on its own, but based on the details you provided, backed up by additional photo research, that's Bridgetown, Barbados. And just to seal the deal, here's a quote I found on the roll call for your voyage. "For those cruise nuts like me I found out that Queen Mary 2 will be in Barbados with us....hurray!:D" P.S.: I think the date of your photo might actually be 15 November 2007. That's the date I have for QM2 being in Barbados and I think 16 November may have been a sea day for you before your arrival back at San Juan on 17 November.

I think there was an itinerary change as we called at St Maarten. Ah, thanks for the tip. I may have to look at St Maarten a little more closely. I see in your roll call that the ports were changed in October 2009 from the original list I have to the following revised list (St Maarten was substituted for Grand Turk). Tortola St Maarten Curacao Grenada Barbados St Lucia Dominica St Kitts St Thomas Your roll call also tells me which ports were expected to be tender ports. That should help with my research since that photo certainly looks like you were anchored off shore. I may figure this out yet although it may have to wait until tomorrow for me to continue the research. I got too distracted earlier this evening with Redrobo's photo.
bluemarble Posted August 26, 2020 #71 Share Posted August 26, 2020 @Host Hattie -- Bingo! It's Grenada!!! I couldn't let this drop being so close to the answer, and in the end it didn't take very long once I knew which islands to concentrate on. I didn't find another photo of that exact beach (with the rocks in the foreground), but I did find a closer-in photo from Grenada that matches many of the same features on shore in the distance. It looks like the photo I found was taken further along the coast to the right of your photo, closer to St George's. So, my answer is Grenada and I'm reasonably confident of that answer.
