Picture-A-Week 2021 - Week 21

 Share

Recommended Posts

Pictures taken between Monday, May 17 and Sunday, May 23.

Spring has sprung (Fall has fallen for y'all south of the equator)! Get out there and take more pictures!

Rules: See above

That's it. This isn't a contest.

All photos taken this week are welcome (not just cruising).

Prizes will not be awarded. Discovering the joy of photography is the prize.

The idea is to get folks out using their cameras for more than vacations and toddler birthdays.

Post one. Post many. Up to you.

Have fun with your camera and share your fun with others!

Mama bluebird perched long enough for me to snap a photo. Her nest Is about 15 feet to the left, 10 feet up a pole.  Daddy was sitting in a tree about 10 feet away.

Since we were just finishing dinner, I didn't have my camera out, so this was taken with my phone, zoomed as far out as I could go.

A beautiful, if rather nippy, morning in Melbourne. Almost the end of autumn.

On my walk around the edge of the bay, I came across a couple of sooty oyster catchers. One decided to not like the paparazzo

Earlier this year, we saw Lila as a rescue puppy posing with her new dog mom. Since then she has grown into a funny, affectionate ball of energy and has become part of the family. This week we got a frantic call late one evening with the terrible news that while on a walk, little Lila had spooked, slipped her harness and run away. Hours of searching were fruitless though many people had seen her. The next morning, flyers were made and a post put on the neighborhood forum. Before they could post the flyers, they got a call from a neighbor saying that Lila was hiding in their back yard less than a block away. Minutes later the frightened little girl was home with her family, tired but very, very happy. We all had a bad night but thankfully, only sleep was lost.

Rescue, Part II

Finally got to load this weekend's shots, so here are some of the wetlands critters spotted Saturday and Sunday:

Red-bellied woodpecker standing by its home:

It's still baby time in the wetlands.  This one is a purple gallinule chick:

A pied-billed grebe juvenile, searching for mom who dove down under the water - they can dive for 30-40 seconds at a time, and the babies sometimes look lost trying to figure out where she'll pop back up:

Last week's post, I showed the atala hairstreak butterfly, the Florida subspecies of which was almost extinct...well this week there's evidence that their comeback is going strong, as this one was busy laying eggs, so there will be yet more atalas on the way:

A purple martin, a speedy little fighter jet of a bird, buzzing over my head:

Very close up with a double-crested cormorant - from just 5 feet away:

Tricolored heron chicks in their nest:
