Isolation/Quarantine Question

I do all of the trip/cruise planning, and my wife generally ask "how many nights" and "cold or hot weather".   She generally trusts my planning and "judgement".😇

We are scheduled for Reflection on January 19 (10 nights).  Yesterday, she asked me a question that I had to say "I don't know" (I hate when that happens).  So, here is the question.  If we should test positive during the cruise, and are placed in isolation, but our wait time is not up by the end of the cruise (is it 5 days or ten days), then what happens when the cruise ends?  (U.S. citizens who are scheduled to fly home, BUT could take a rental car and drive either home or to relative's house in Florida.)  Is it our choice of what to do?  Does it depend on if symptomatic?  Are we placed under "guard" to see what we do?

I realize that procedures are quickly changing.  I have also read accounts of people in this situation on other cruise lines, and it seems somewhat inconsistent.  Does Florida "guidelines" enter into this.  So many things to consider.  Any current information is most welcome.   Thank you.

From accounts I have read from many posters on the forum, you will be disembarked separately from the other passengers. Celebrity will try to arrange for transportation for you to a nearby hotel. You will be given an allowance for hotel/food expenses for the remainder of your quarantine period. I believe that, should you choose to do so, you would be allowed to rent a car and drive home. There are definitely no guards posted outside your hotel room door to keep you locked in for the duration. You are expected to voluntarily comply with quarantine recommendations. Certainly, you would be unable to fly home unless you lied on your airline check-in.

There are a few threads.

I don't think Celebrity has released an official standard. Recent reports mention a $150/day room and $100/day food allowance.

People quarantined have reported Celebrity is requiring a 10 day quarantine on board. Reports are you can't get out sooner by testing negative on board.

After you test positive you are moved from your cabin to a cabin in a isolation area (red zone) of the ship.

The area is closed to other passengers and you are not allowed to leave your cabin.  You will get your meals and beverages delivered and left on a table outside your cabin.  You will have access to the pay per view movies and stream wi-fi.

if your traveling partner tests negative on 2 occasions, 24 hours apart, they will be able to remain in the original cabin and move freely around the ship.  Your traveling partner can choose to go into isolation with you, but once there they can’t leave.  We have decided if 1 of us is positive and the other not the one who is negative will not go into isolation.  It seems it would be better to have someone outside if isolation to advocate for the other, if needed and make arrangements for hotel, transportation home, etc. to finish the 10 day period on land.

The CDC and airlines are currently saying that if you are asymptomatic, then you can leave isolation after 5 days and travel if you continue to wear a mask.  (or MAYBE it is wear a mask if symptomatic and no mask if asymptomatic)  Either way, it is not 10 days.  So maybe Celebrity will change the amount of time.  Easiest thing is just don't get it onboard.  Stay away from people as much as possible.  No crowding into bars, casinos, etc.  Being fully vaccinated and boosted and getting an omicron breakthrough kind of changes things.

Good/tight fitting mask should be worn for 10 days in either case.

Bottom line is that isolation once off the ship is voluntary.  You can arrange your own transportation home  (or elsewhere) and can isolate as you see fit.  You are not under guard and locked in a hotel.

This was not the case on the January 3 Equinox sailing. My son’s fiancé tested positive, he was negative. He was not allowed to quarantine with her. I do think it is different on every ship. Maybe a decision the captains makes? The reimbursement for hotel has changed from $350/night to $150/night. They are no longer providing private transportation home. They will pay up to $400 for change fees, etc for your flight.

I could be mistaken but I thought I read that the change to 5 days did not include cruise ships.

Correct.  But days on board in quarantine are counted when you disembark.

This day thing is confusing and hopefully will be clarified - don't laugh - soon.  Both my 50ish kids decided to isolate for 10 days and wear masks to protect coworkers and family

What we do know is things are changing both often and with little or notice both in the US, Canada and various ports.

The bottom line is that what happens to someone who tests positive depends completely upon where you get off the ship. If you're talking about the USA, then you need to look to the CDC.

I do believe we've all demonstrated that all of us here are clear as mud. 🤣

While it may change, Celebrity's interpretation in the latest letter issued to passengers said:

We would also like to call your attention to the recent changes in the United States Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) length of time for shoreside isolation and quarantine to five days. Please
note that this recent change DOES NOT apply to passengers who isolate or quarantine while traveling on a cruise vessel. However, should you test positive for COVID-19 while onboard, any isolation or quarantine time spent onboard can be applied to the timelines established by the CDC for isolation or
quarantine ashore once you disembark the vessel. Please note that if you reside outside the United States, your return home is still subject to your country's own testing and re-entry protocols, which are not superseded by CDC guidelines or our protocols.

I think that just means "if you test positive on day 2 of a 10 day cruise, we won't set you free on day 7".
