Since the only folks who can tell you what's going on aboard the Gem right now are those aboard the Gem right now, you might want to ask your questions in the active thread about the current Gem cruise (which, as I'm sure you know, was initially cut short [not cancelled as some refer to what happened] but is now heading back to NY on schedule, although the ship did not call at several scheduled ports].

Is everything on board casino restaurants open and entertainment working? And how many people on board?  I am on the 19th cruise and cannot wait to go just wondering?

The cruise was cancelled mid-cruise. At least two other threads on the topic.

Cancelled - cut short.  Potato - Pa-tah-toe.

I'm not sure how it was cancelled OR cut short given that it's returning on the same day that it was scheduled to. They're skipping ports, but that's not the same thing as cancelled or cut short.

Exactly. Which is why I described it above as "initially cut short."  They are now getting the full ten days.  Definitely not cancelled or cut short.

The captain's letter said cancelled.  They're getting a full refund and 50% off a FCC.  I'd called it cancelled or cut short.  At the very least they  are not out of money.

Threads that have been updated to say that the cruise will return as scheduled to NY.  So not cut short, not cancelled.  But missing scheduled ports.

Call it what you want.  Norwegian calls it cancelled!

Not calling it what I want.  Things change.  They are now arriving in NYC as scheduled.  Word from those currently onboard.

You are in fact calling it what you want.  It is beyond mere semantics.  Its return to NYC has nothing to do with the cruise being cancelled! I'll take NCL's word over yours.  Can you admit that they've cancelled the cruise?

Semantics.  They are still cruising.

Can you admit that the information in the letter has been updated?  It clearly states "return to NY tomorrow" - which would have been yesterday.

I really think NCL used the wrong wording in the letter.  We all known that NCL proof readers seem to be on a permanent vacation.  LOL!

To me, cancelled would mean the cruise ended and passengers were put off the ship or were returned to port earlier than scheduled.

With the way this has worked out for the Gem, the passengers are actually getting their full scheduled cruise just not with the port stops that were initially scheduled.

To me, I would call it an "adjusted" cruise over "cancelled", but that's me.  It could be that by stating that the cruise was "cancelled" that the refund of the cruise fare kicks in which I feel was very generous compensation.

I think you are probably on to something...their reservation systems are probably already set up to handle NCL initiated "cancellations" and very little work would need to be done...just let the system do what the system does.  Was it a "true" cancellation based on the normal English word definition...no, but that may very well have simplified back-end actions.

No, it did not; it said "we must cancel the remainder of your Norwegian Gem cruise currently underway."  (The letter is posted in comment 3 of the live-from thread regarding this matter.)  So, in other words, the cruise was "cut short," it wasn't cancelled, and the Captain didn't say it was.  And, subsequently, as we all know, NCL changed plans and now the ship is returning to NY as scheduled on January 19.

i believe the use of the word "cancel" was to set expectations for the remainder of the time at sea that not all venues would be open nor all services provided due to staff shortages. if they are "canceling" the remainder of the cruise and refunding and issuing FCC, nobody can reasonably complain when they fall short iof expected service levels.

the use of the word "cancel" might also have something to do with insurance... NCL's insurance as a company, not passengers' travel insurance.

my own personal opinion is that "cancel " "and "cancellation"  are the correct words to use here. you don't refund your customers' money if everything goes as planned and you fulfill your commitments.

I think it sounds quite exciting but that's me.  Plus, I wouldn't have to pay for it!?

This should become an option for a cruise, kind of like booking a room where they decide and then let you know.

You could have a lower cost cruise, on the NCL Mystery, where you simply show up for a 9 day cruise and see where you go!

How is a cruise that leaves when it's supposed to and returns when it's supposed to "cancelled?" The ports are cancelled. But the cruise is not cancelled. That's not semantics, it's just facts.

Just ignore the fact that NCL says it was cancelled.  One port, and no one gets to disembark.  What a cruise!

Given that the 800 passengers on board are still on board and will be until Wednesday 1/19, the cruise was not cancelled after all.  I'm sure NCL was considering cancelling *the rest of the cruise* back on the 14th, but it's apparent that once they understood the weather pattern, they decided it was better/safer to continue at sea until the actual end of the cruise.  They didn't disembark anybody and fly them home, they kept sailing, so they didn't cancel after all.  Shows, dining, entertainment and everything else on board continued as normally as they could without stopping at ports.
