Is it a proven fact that most gamblers are smokers....maybe they should open up some meetings "friends of WHOEVER"...FOR smokers and gamblers....LOLOLOL

Actually I think that is an old fact.  I am a pretty avid gambler and I definitely see cigarettes as a generational thing.  What the younger kids are doing now are vaping.  Still awful but tolerable.

Has Royal Caribbean announced anything yet?  You have to remember Carnival isn't about safety, they had to pay millions in fines due to dumping waste in the ocean.  They couldn't careless about the well being of others.

Royal has gone back to the pre omicron policies which include no masks and smoking in the casino.  You do need to wear masks in hallways and elevators.  I was on the Freedom of the Seas last year and they had a pretty big no smoking area.  I think they have that on all of the ships. Carnival only has it on Mardis Gras and the 3 separate casinos in the Dream Class.

That wasn't Carnival Cruise Line. It was Princess.

Carnival casinos have non-smoking areas - I have had smokers booted from them. But the smoke still goes everywhere.

Carnival started masking with Delta and became more serious with Omicron. Royal and NCL were late to the party and first to abandon safety. Royal also has segregated areas for vaccinated vs non-vaccinated.

Does anybody have the faintest idea WHY the reversal decision of Carnival and Royal?? I have NEVER smoked nor do I visit the casino BUT I do know when I'm on 'that deck' (the faint smell). I grew up in a smoker's household and both ex's were 1 pack a day smokers so I'm no stranger to it. Just curious, why the sudden change.

Princess is OWNED by Carnival Corp.. So are a number of other lines including Carnival Cruise Line. There is not a Carnival Corp Covid standard.

And what is difference?  The post was regarding dumping waste and Carnival's regard for safety.

I would think the corporation would be responsible.

Smoking policies are set by the individual cruise line, not by corporate. Dumping waste is still irrelevant to smoking in the casino. For example, AFAIK, smoking is still prohibited in the casinos on Princess.

With few exceptions cruise lines would go broke if people stepped aboard the ship and never went to the casino, took excursions, visited the spa or drank alcohol. Those are high profit items and serve as a cost shift from cruise fare. It's not rocket science (my degree is from a public university) to know that Carnival and others will most likely not upset that algorithm.

Of note was the non-smoking casino aboard the Breeze we visited in November. It was in what was once a meeting room area and was busy on the times we peeked in.

Carnival actually started with no masks.  I was so jealous because we had already booked RCL and they were doing masking everywhere but the vaccinated zones.  As far as the vaccinated zones, I did not mind it afterall.  It was all the adult areas and everyone adult had to be vaccinated.  Made since to mask up around the kids who could not.

Yes, I know. I was there. I don't care for Royal with or without masks and having to reserve this and that or be told where you can or can't sit.

I like Carnival. I like Royal. I like NCL. I like Celebrity.

I don't care for Princess!

But - I sail them all (for the things I DO like)! Well, except for Princess, I don't picture myself back with them anytime soon!  😄

Tom, we found Princess to be VERY boring. Tried them twice. Not for us. We had a great trip because we were on a nice trip with people we love but some activities would be nice. They had 50 people show up to origami because there were literally only two other things to do the whole day. On a sea day!  😂😂

Unless I just missed something, this occurred without fanfare. The Carnival website now says smoking is allowed in the casino. Previously, smoking was banned completely. I am sure many smokers are happy. Personally, I was looking forward to being able to breathe in the casino and my hair and clothes not smelling like smoke!

Per John Held it was based on their "brilliant Medical Staff".  Well he had to backtrack and say it was all related to Covid19 numbers dropping. I cannot imagine any "Brilliant" Medical staff saying smoking wasn't harmful.  Obviously a hot topic.  It's the only place you can smoke INSIDE any Carnival Cruise ship.  Why is it some sort of sacred cow? They also preach fire is the #1 danger onboard a ship. Smoking seems to go against what they preach.

I think the only way that they'd be able to track that is on the Mardi Gras, since there are two distinct sides of the casino (smoking and non-smoking).

Another way for non-smokers to turn the tide - is just leave Carnival. If Carnival doesn't "get the message" then just eff them and move along.

Tom

Or non smokers just not gamble at all. Smokers make up 14% of the US Population. Logically that transfers over to the cruise ship industry. See if they can make it with 86% less of their revenue source.

It doesn’t work that way, I think you would be shocked to know the numbers on how much of the casino revenue comes from smokers. It has always been true and evidently it has been proven once again, otherwise the casino would have remained non smoking after the Covid forced experiment. It is the slot players that are more likely to smoke and spend most of their cruise in the casino and that is where the majority of the casino revenue comes from.

If smokers are offered free or perk laden discounts on cabins, they'd most likely grumble and stick with a smoke free Carnival than start as an unknown elsewhere. That's my $.02 !

Tom

They are slot players that enjoy smoking while they play and the big players have plenty of options. They can go back to Vegas or their local casinos or they can wait out the two months it took the cruise lines to give in. The free rooms and perks allows them to spend most of their vacation budget in the casino and the cruise lines like the guaranteed profit they generate. It doesn’t matter if they win or lose, the offers are based on “coin in” and hours played daily.

I think Carnival has made a smart move starting to remove casino bars and allowing smoking only while playing. This gets the smokers out of the casino that just go there to smoke, they will have to go outside. Carnival doesn’t care about them because they don’t add revenue and only add to the smokiness in the casino.
