Diet mixers?

Recommended Posts

Do NCL bars stock any sugar free mixers besides diet pepsi and club soda?  We are sailing on the Bliss and, ideally hoping they will have diet tonic water available.  There won't be much point in my taking the drink package if there's nothing I can drink on a low carb/no sugar diet so I'd like to know in advance.  Thanks for any info.

They did have diet (Sprite, 7 Up, Sierra Mist, not sure which) Only had in Cans.  However, that was on my last cruise just before the Pandemic hit.  I doubt they expanded any in the no sugar category.

I avoid carbs too.  Not to go off topic but I use those MIO drops with the club soda.  They are small, fit in my pocket and the Bartenders seem to know what they are.

Thank you.  I was thinking that in a pinch I could bring along MIO drops or the individual Crystal Light packets but I would much rather be able to have a gin and tonic.

Maybe not the optimal solution (that would be offering a nice selection of sugar-free options directly on the ship) but in a similar tactic to the Mio drops you can get diet tonic syrup concentrate that's designed for those SodaStream machines.   Then just order gin and club soda and add your own tonic kick to taste.  Google for "sugar-free tonic syrup" or similar.   Or just check on Amazon and you can find it.

I’ve asked for diet mixes and they don’t have them.  I’ve also asked for skinny drinks.  Same answer.  I bring crystal light packets and margaritaville drink mix packets.  I ask for ice, shot of tequila, and grand mairney  (sic) in a glass.  Then i mix my own.  Occasionally i splurge and have a bushwacker.

Your post got me thinking and I did a search.  Not sure if its good info but it said updated March 2022.  Drink lists show Sugarfree Redbull, 3 flavored seltzers, lemon lime, Mango and Grapefruit,  along with Diet Pepsi but that was it.   Also showed generic diet lemon lime but didn't say they were in cans.  I will be on the Bliss in August so was interested in what they had too.  Will still bring my Mio Drops.

My husband got me Diet Sprite at the casino bar on Getaway last month. It was in a can. I wanted something in the room without caffeine for night time. I order Vodka and soda with a splash of cranberry and a lime when I am trying to save calories. Thanks for posting this list.

In the past, they have had diet Sierra Mist in cans, but those are difficult to come by. So difficult, in fact, that we had all of them in our DOS on the Dawn a few years ago. Halfway through the week my husband would ask for one at a bar and they didn't have any. We ended up bringing the ones from our cabin.

There is a possible solution here, but it is not the simplest thing to do. You can call the special needs department and let them know you need sugar free ginger ale because you are a diabetic (which is true for me) that gets seasick (also true). If they grant you a liquid exemption you are able to carry on what you'd like. Of course, this is once you fight security about it. 😁

We did this for several cruises. It's not ideal, but it is something to consider.

I saw someone come to a bar with packets of sweetener from the buffet or dining room and ask the bartender to make a cocktail with that instead of simple syrup. Or if you like it sour, you can ask them to just leave out the syrup.

Good idea. I love a good margarita but have really focused this year to reduce calories and lower my sugar intake. With the unlimited drink package I really don’t want to fully lose track of my progress. Do you bring a water bottle to mix it or does the margaritaville mix easy enough just in a glass with ice?

I really thought I was asking an oddball question but it seems I have a lot of company!  Since NCL won't allow us to bring our own mixers, they really should step it up in the low-cal area.  There are so many good (but liquid) sugar-free margarita mixes on the market.  I bet they are loosing a good bit of revenue by not stocking one.

There's Bubbly on the ship as well though I don't think it's a very good mixer.

As with a previous post here, my wife and I cleaned the ship out of diet Sierra Mist a couple of years ago on a 7 day cruise.

For our last cruise, we upgraded to the premium package and drank bottled water at meals to save the diet soda for drinks, though it's an expensive way to do it.  My wife may also have added shots to her Starbucks but I would never confirm that. 😉

Totally, totally agree.  Hope someone high-up at NCL is reading this: give us Diet Canada Dry ginger ale please!

Interesting thread gave me some ideas... Would this work?

Buy the SodaStream® Diet Fountain Variety Pack (diet cola, diet root beer, etc). Pour the mixer into the type of container that is allowed on board (use your imagination).

Then mix it with club soda from the bar.

An e-mail to the Food and Beverage Manager would not go amiss.  There's one on each ship, of course, but I wonder if there is an appropriate head person at corporate.

Yes, I was planning to use whatever I bring (Mio drops, powdered Margarita singles or Sodastream syrup) with club soda, lime (and the liquor, of course) from the bar.  Best to keep it as simple as possible though. Don't want to look like I'm conducting a science experiment (or spiking my drink with shampoo!!!)

I don’t really care for sugar free alternatives but I have had them make margaritas and asked that it be half full and the other half club soda! I still get the flavor but less calories. I like really fizzy drinks though so it works for me.

Surprised to hear of a Diet Sprite being offered on NCL

I was surprised also. It was definitely Diet Sprite, but I really wish they had Diet Coke. I will drink Diet Pepsi but do not enjoy it as much, and I feel like it goes flat quicker than Diet Coke. If I see some Diet Coke when I am in port I drink some before I get back on the ship. I may be slightly addicted.

I think it would be nice if they could have both Coke and Pepsi, but I guess it doesn't work that way.

Yes I feel your pain.  For the last cruise I brought Baja Bob's and Skinnies Cocktail mixer sugar free dry mixes.  Skinnies has cranberry, mojito and mule mixes as well as margarita, but I prefer Bob's margarita.  I also had them do skinny margaritas with just lime and club soda, but you could add artificial sweetener to it.  Same with mojitos with just mint, lime juice and club soda or diet sprite.  I think there's a pretty good market for sugar free drinks on board if the cruise lines would listen.
