Since booking a cruise in early June (Danube Waltz this fall), I no longer receive the promo code emails from Viking. Is this usually what happens after booking? I am glad for this topic to stay aware of promos.

Egypt, August 2, NO THANKS.  We were lucky in April 2023 with only one afternoon over 100 degrees.  There is a reason Viking usually doesn't sail the Nile in the summer,  TOO HOT

We decided to book this because of the $25 deposit and the ability to postpone final payment until January 2027 due to another cruise on the books.  I agree with @PasadenaDave though.  July/August is not an ideal time to visit Egypt, but viewing the total eclipse from the Nile and 6 minutes plus of totality will be amazing!

We watched the April 8 TSE from the top deck of a cruise ship off the coast of Mazatlan, Mexico, and it was utterly delightful!  Of course, it was early spring, and out on the ocean, so we didn't have excessive heat, but the experience made 10 days on a WAY TOO BIG ship worth it. I sincerely hope that your experience is just as special.

Thanks for sharing your experience!  My husband has experienced a total solar eclipse, but I have not.  Egypt AND a TSE just sound fabulous.  Maybe it will make the heat tolerable.  At least we have 2.5 years to make our decision about the trip. 😉

We went to Israel, Egypt and Jordan last August on the Aton with Viking.

Was it hot? Absolutely

Was it worth it? Absolutely

Are you going to have an amazing time? Absolutely

Cheers! 🥂

Thank you for your insight!  Living in Florida, I’m not a fan of hot weather vacations.  We went with Viking 2 years ago in March, and it was amazing.  The total solar eclipse is driving the decision to book this trip (and the fact we have 2.5 years to make a decision. 😜)

We looked at booking this but the 5 days in Cairo are about 4 too many for us.  The only thing that wanted us to make it back was to see the new Museun which maybe will be open by then. But we decided that we didn’t want to spend four other days there.

I looked at the itinerary for each sailing date, and they were each slightly different.  I could only see the cities listed for each day, and all were designed to get you to the Luxor area for the August 2nd eclipse.  I definitely understand not wanting to spend more days in Cairo.  IF we decided to go on this trip, I might look into private tours in Cairo.  Hopefully the Grand Egyptian Museum will be open by then, which would be a big bonus for us. When we were there in March 2022, we were told the GEM would open by the end of 2022…not.

Interesting fact… This morning, in Total Eclipse on the Nile cruises are showing as sold out.  Do you think that could be the case?  Wondering if Viking was just testing the waters with this trip?

The time in Cairo is about right.  If I recall our time was:

Arrival Day

Muhammed Ali Mosque and Older Museum

Pyramids Day

Morning spent traveling to Airport and flight to Luxor

On return flight from Luxor to Cairo and a day at the Mummy Museum

Flight out.

If you haven't booked yet you might consider waiting.  We were on this sailing last November.  Originally booked a pv3 for $17.5k, later repriced for $14k, cancelled and rebooked (forfeiting Tripmate premium) for $12k.  Later met folks who booked dv's last minute for $4k.  Ship sailed 84% full.  Just not enough customers to fill all those 18 and 33 day LA sailings.  It was a great cruise though, slid through just before start of rainy season.

Thanks but I already booked. I'm very happy with my deal.  $7,300 PP  for the last DV3, free air and free silver seas.  Not bad for 33 days when you love sea days.

Don’t you think a lot of that price drop was driven by people canceling after the unrest in the Mideast?  Hopefully by the time of the eclipse, things will have calmed down?

Yes, was speaking of Hawaii and Polynesia.  In retrospect it's not surprising  they had trouble filling a 33 day sailing that included a holiday (Thanksgiving) and was followed by several similar 18 and 33 day sailings.  Learned lesson that In situations like that it can pay to wait.  On the other hand for itineraries such as the NY - Amsterdam we're looking at for 2025 where two of three sailings are already completely sold out you can't procrastinate.

We live just over an hour from the port that one sails out of, and I would pounce upon that deal if we didn't need to get on a plane on Day 30 of that intinerary to go jump on another Viking ship.

We're considering the July 2025 cruise NYC-AMS but would like to know if they do any scenic cruising around Svalbard, to increase chance of seeing wildlife (other than birds).  Have you read anything about that?

Thank you!  My favorite is usually my most recent. In this case, that would be the Arctic expedition we just did with Silversea: Tromso to Reykjavik via Svalbard and Jan Mayen. We saw so much fascination geology and wildlife, including a mama polar bear with two cubs at close range, chowing down on a walrus.

Before that was a Total Solar Eclipse cruise on Princess, where we had 4:24 of totality at sea in April. We cruised 60 days ealier in the year in eastern and Southern Asia, including a river cruise on the Mekong.

Most of our cruises have been on Celebrity. As of a few months ago, for the first time since 2017, we don't have any Celebrity cruises booked. We are just pretty much over larger ships.

Since this is a Viking thread, and I don't want to be too far off topic, I'll mention that our next cruise is on Viking Ocean from Puerto Rico, across the Caribbean, and up the Amazon River. This will be followed by a flight to Panama City, then an Azamara cruise through the Canal, then back across the Caribbean to Florida, flying home just before Christmas. The funny thing is, this will be our first time in the Caribbean. We've walked on 6 continents, and seen Africa, but we've never been to one of the most popular vacation spots of all. We will visit Africa for real next January through March.

We are very grateful for our many Celebrity cruises, not only for the great experiences and memories, but because those cruises earned us status on Azamara before the split, and on Silversea, which got us included laundry on that last cruise, as well as a big discount on the Galapagos expedition we booked onboard.

We are very fortunate, indeed.

Many years ago we did Galapagos with Celebrity, one of our best trips...we were with 7 couples and called it Camp for adults!!  there is a local drink in the sailing cirlcles of Detroit called the Hummmer....the ship made it for us...no easy feat because it is ice cream baed and they made their own ice cream.  Memories are wonderful.
