I know we cannot bring an electric steamer on the cruise but has anyone ever used an electric one? If so could you share the information on it.

Thanks

If you can’t bring one, what is the point of assessing its usefulness?

Your steward can see that your gown or silk shirt can get steamed.

NCL will bring an iron and ironing board to your cabin.

This is true, and it baffles me.

Guests are prohibited from bringing and using their own irons and steamers because they can be a dangerous fire hazard.

“But here,” they say, “use ours!”

It is because they give you a set amount of time to use the ironing board and iron. They'll ask you how long you think you'll need to use them. If you tell them, let's say, thirty minutes, they're going to be knocking on your door at 31 minutes to retrieve them. That way, they have good control over the usage, and don't have to worry about the person(s) who bring their own, use them, forget to turn them off, go about their merry way, and potentially start a fire.

The ship's irons are inspected and tested regularly, something they cannot do with ones brought onboard by passengers.  I remember when NCL was trying out coffee makers in every cabin, and we were required to rotate them out for inspection and servicing, and one of them caught fire in the electrician's shop.  The most common failure of things with heating elements is the "auto-off" switch, that everyone claims is the key to safety.
