Virtuosa 16th October very disappointing.

Well Hi to all the Cruisers out there.  We have just returned from the Virtuosa, the very same Ship we sailed on last June.

The Sailing was packed beyond anything I have ever seen in 20 years+ Cruising.  I believe there were 5,600:+ Passengers onboard.  We thought it was term time, but evidently in Scotland and other parts of the UK it was Half Term.

Embarkation: was really quick because Covid Tests etc are no more.  We were supposed to have a Temperature check, but this did not happen.  The Staff in the Terminal did check our Vaccine status which was good.  However, on board so many people were coughing, sneezing etc. 70+ Staff Members were off sick with Covid.

Once onboard, I knew immediately, that I would have to lower my expectations in terms of overall Cruise experience.  The Muster was as it has been since Sailing resumed last year, and we watched the Video and then reported to our Muster Station to Check in.

From here, it really went downhill.  Trying to get a drink in the Champagne Bar was more like a Rugby Scrum.  People were 10 Deep queuing and the Staff were overwhelmed.  Subsequent evenings though, this Bar at 5:00 pm was the only one we could have a pre-Dinner Drink.  Ruth in particular was marvellous in her approach and professionalism.

Dinner: Opera Restaurant.  Early Seating.  We were seated in a Walkway and every 5 Seconds we were bumped on our Arms by the Hundreds rushing by.  There was no dress code whatsoever.  I know it's a very personal thing now, but for Men to wear Football Shorts /Tops on an "Elegant" Evening is awful.  Some were sitting with their Legs up on their Chairs like small Children do!  We asked to move seats and it took 4 nights for this to happen because the Ship was so full.  Waiters did their best, but they simply didn't have the time to even listen to your order half the time.  It took on average 1 Hour before the Main Course arrived, by which time we were fed up of all the loud shouting and carrying on that we left and never had Dessert.

The only Dining experience that we enjoyed was the Butcher's Cut (Lunchtime) as part of our Diamond Perk.  Wonderful food and calm elegant experience.

The Ports were really nice, La Rochelle, Bilbao, La Caruna and Le Havre.  I think MSC organised the Shuttles etc. really well but the queues to get back on board were horrendous!

The Shows had improved since our previous Sailing which was a nice surprise.  There were 3 Shows per Night so if booked, we always found a Seat.  After the Shows though, there were no Seats anywhere and it seemed like the only other Activity was a Mass Party in the Galleria with Thousands of People rubbing Shoulder to Shoulder.  Not the experience we really want.  Usually we love the Silent Discos etc. but not on this Cruise.

Everyone we spoke to had the same opinion, that there were simply far too many Passengers onboard for this Ship.

On Royal Caribbean Oasis Class, yes the inside of Ships are bigger/wider and can accommodate vast amounts of people.  On the Virtuosa, the inside spaces are simply too small/narrow.  The Carosel Lounge is now a paying Venue which it wasn't before.

Disembarkation: Disaster Darling.  Hundreds of people couldn't be bothered to place their Luggage outside the night before and brought it down to the Gangway for Self-Assist but not at 7 am (which was the time), but at 8, or 9 etc.

Perhaps if MSC made some announcements the night before outlining the procedure for disembarkation this may have helped those who were First time Cruisers because I really think they didn't understand that the Number you are assigned means going to a designated Area and then being escorted off the Ship.

We are Diamond Members and had Number 1.  People who had Number 6 were called before us and it was absolute chaos.  Because of this dis-organisation, there were so many angry Passengers waiting in the Terminal at Southampton, for their Luggage to be brought from the Ship which never usually happens if people disembark at their designated time.  We queued for nearly 2 Hours down in the Atrium.  Not good.

The 1,500 Children onboard were very well behaved on the whole, but the experience of so many Passengers really lowered the whole experience. Queues, rowdy drunken behaviour which seems to be how it is going now.  With the Drinks Packages available, so many people are taking Cruises then before.  Nothing wrong with that, for me it's the best way to travel.  However, what was once a thing of style and beauty is reduced to a much lower drunken experience with no consideration of others.  People running into the Lifts and leaving Wheelchair users waiting, Eating Burgers and Pizza whilst walking about the Ship, Swigging Bottles of Beer whilst going up and down the Lift/Stairs.  These were things I never used to see.  Forget about Washing Hands / Hand Sanitizers etc. Some people refused point blank to do it.  We were told by Staff and Passengers who were taking longer Cruises on the Ship, that there was an awful lot of Covid onboard.  My Husband is now up in Bed (3 Days post Cruise) with Covid for the first time.  We wore Masks everywhere because we are still careful, but this couldn't prevent him being infected because of the amount of Passengers and also the lack of pre-cruise Testing.

It was a real shame, because we know what a beautiful Ship the Virtuosa is and how the Cruise can be.  The one last year was magnificent.  Staff told us that the previous sailing had 3,500 Passengers which was far more comfortable.  I know Cruise Lines are trying to claw back the revenue they lost but at what cost to the Passengers who enjoy the Cruise experience.

Would I sail with MSC again? It's very doubtful now.

Very understandable, but the first rule is really to avoid the school holidays of UK, Germany, France and Italy. As I have two kids I know the difference between cruising without them outside the holidays and with them during holidays very well. It is two completely different worlds.

Sorry to hear your cruise was disappointing. I agree with the design flaw for seating. She is a beautiful ship but no where to sit in the bars if its pouring with rain outside when shes at full capacity, especially the most popular bar onboard in the Virtuosa bar lounge. I've sailed on this ship 5 times, when she's had only 800 paxs to 3000 and this summer in the middle of school holidays at nearly full capacity. My last cruise in August on the Virtuosa was my 1st time in YC and what a difference. Yes the ship was packed but YC was a different class. Yes I could still go down in the evening have a drink go to a show etc but when it got too much I just went back to YC at least I could get a seat a drink and relax. You don't have to fight round the buffet and yc have their own restaurant.

Don't let one ship in the MSC class put you off. Some of the older ships have just as much style but more seating and not as many paxs. We like the Magnifica med size ship. If you prefer the newer bigger ships and your budget can stretch try the yacht club it is a completely different experience and try and cruise outside of the peak times if you can (school hols I understand not everyone can though)

We were invited to upgrade to YC but it would have meant an Inside Cabin.  I simply adore the Balcony and sit there at night.  Maybe we could try YC another time.  It did look great.xxx

It's worth it. I'm back onboard the Virtuosa in Dec in yc (was meant to be the Preziosa before anyone thinks i have some weird thing going on with the Virtuosa because it will be my 6th time!). The check in well never got on board so quick. In Southampton there is no queuing at a desk we were sat down offered a drink and the staff came to you to check you in and then they escort you to board the ship and pass the queues to board, definitely priority boarding! Straight up to yc where you are offered another drink! We had barely sat down and the butler was ready to take us to our cabin. The same for disembarkation you get to the front of the queues. I would definitely recommend it. Plus you get to see the whole of the ship and can go back to yc when ever. All my cruises I have booked with msc are all now in yc. 😊

Thanks for your review. I hope you remain healthy. We had a packed MSC ship some months ago. We were sick with COVID after debarking. Many people coughing and not wearing masks or keeping distance.

I am curious were these excursion shuttles to town or the port buses to get folks into town? I ask as we are looking to book the MSC excursion ZEE11 for Bruges... it's basically Bruges on your own with the bus.. I am curious if we book this will we be assigned a bus and time, no lines. or are we simply buyin tickets via MSC and will be in the cattle crowd with everyone else on the same buses. thanks!

If it's an excursion, that is different from the shuttle bus.    Bruges is a bit of a weird one, in that irrespective of the cruise line, the bus park in Bruges itself is a bit far out from the centre which is largely pedestrianised, even for those on excursions.

Some cruise lines operate shuttle buses to the nearby town of Blankenberge (which in itself is lovely .. nice beach, all the chocolate shops Bruges has etc) to the railway station, so anyone wishing to go to Bruges can do by train.

If you are on a ship booked excursion, you will be asked to meet somewhere on the ship, usually a theatre or bar, given an excursion bus number, which will correlate to the number on a bus shore side.

Thanks! Good infos. How far of a walk is it from this coach park to city  center? My mom is mobile but might need a break if it’s more than 1 km walk

I wonder if MSC offers these shuttles to Blankenberge? Is there a way to see if they do via the cruise login pages??

The last time I was on a booked excursion to Bruges (not MSC) the bus park at Bargeplein is around a 20 minute walk into the centre.   I would doubt there are any other much closer.   For those independent passengers, MSC will have to take you somewhere.   When you dock in Zeebrugge, you can't get off a ship and wander around the port.   At the very least, you will be taken on a bus a couple of minute ride to the customs terminal (nice little souvenir shop too).  Bruges is 17km from the port.

If there is no MSC shuttle to Blankenberge station, the tram stop at the port of Zeebrugge-kerk will take you into Blankenberge in around 15 minutes.   Apologies for being a bit vague about a MSC shuttle bus, I was in Zeebrugge / Blankenberge a few weeks ago, but it was on Queen Mary 2.

I now have Covid.🤧 Feel awful.  First time being infected.

Yes we had to use one Shuttle Bus (Free) in La Rochelle, because the Port would not allow Passengers to walk from the Ship for safety.

The other Shuttle was in Getxo for Bilbao.  We were told that there was nothing in the Port and advised to purchase their Tickets into Bilbao.  Once there, we still had to walk 45 Minutes into the Old Town!

On the way back we saw many Passengers taking leisurely strolls around Getxo and it looked beautiful.  We paid £13.00 each for the Tickets which was a needless expense.  We are never usually duped like this.  I must be getting old.xxx

With Brugges, we have been many times on Cruises and it all depends where the Ship Docks.  Once we walked along to the Train Station and another time, we were driven on Buses into Blankenberg?? to catch the Train into Brugges from there.

One of my favourite Cities.xxx

We've always taken the train into Bruges so don't know exactly where the bus park is but think it may be close to the station. If so there are regular public buses that you can catch for a quick, cheap ride into the centre. We did it a few years ago with my mum who also couldn't walk far.

I don't think MSC offer a shuttle to Blankenburg station, you will have to use the coastal tram. The tram is great and offers lots of good options for anyone not wanting to go into Bruges, from Ostend in the south to Knokke in the North. Been to Bruges many times and Knokke is now our town of choice to visit at this stop. Nice beachfront, bars, restaurants and good shopping but a bit quieter than Blankenburg.

If you are looking for a cheaper option for a shuttle into Bruges, there is a private one that picks up at the customs terminal. Not sure of the company but if you Google you will probably find it, lots of people use it.

We sailed on Preziosa a few years back with two of our Grandkids, we took them to Blankenburg which is very nice but very few cafes were open, not sure which day we were there. At the port gates and the main road turn right and a short walk on the same side will take you to the Tram stop near to where there is a Submarine and what looks like bars and cafes. Not sure of the fare but it was quite low, the Tram stop in Blankenburg was in the centre of town and about a 10-minute walk to the beach.

For future reference Getxo is a lovely little town with sufficient to fill half a day. There is the beautiful beach, some cafes, tapas and shops at the harbour near the ship and the main town is up the hill opposite the beach area.

The town is not huge but has nice clothes shops, cafes, chocolate shops etc to pick up a few things. Walk along the promenade and either climb the (very steep) hill or there is a small funicular lift about half way along the promenade in the hill side. Last week it cost 20 cents each way per person and masks were compulsory as it is considered public transport. They charge a bit more for it in the summer, I seem to remember 1 euro in summer and you need hard cash. The lift takes you out just along from the shops, bars cafes etc. there are several shopping streets and a train station if you wanted to go further afield.

Add my partner and myself as a couple who managed to escape getting Covid until we sailed on this ship.  I thought it a badly run ship with not nearly enough information disseminated.  Dining room timings were terrible, we managed to get into breakfast once, being turned away nearly every day due to the restaurant being full.  I did not go on holiday to have to eat at a buffet everyday (although it was preferable to the food served in the Minuetto dining room in the evening).  Ship did not feel big but that was mainly due to the fact that there was only 1 room to go that was adults only on the entire ship.  Did not dare go to the Galleria due to all the children.

I wouldn't blame MSC. We've just had a very similar experience on P&O Ventura.

It's simply the school holidays.

The whole country won't be off at the same time, it's staggered over a couple of weeks. Some schools even get 2 weeks in October.

Me too.  Fingers crossed!  Apparently it's Welsh half term, but we *shouldn't* be seeing kids as they wouldn't have been able to miss school on the Friday. Thats if they have parents who value education...

Surely; school breaks are to be avoided as much as possible for nice mainstream cruise lines experiences.

Regarding the shuttles vs "on your own" shore excursions; things works like follows:

If you purchase an MSC "on your own" shore excursion, that will be provided with a bus and a guide; you'll be given a ticket, a meet point inside the ship, you'll be escorted to your actual bus and your guide will give you information on your options during your free time, usually a map of the city, an emergency contact and you'll be given a time to come back for return travel. Pick up places use to be as near as possible to the main attractions and are rarely on public transportation places. You can purchase an "on your own" excursion beforehand, and they'll be done generally on modern tourism buses. More expensive, but generally better value than a regular shuttle.

MSC may or may not offer a shuttle bus service from your ports of call to the main attractions, depending on whether the ports authorities manage their owns exclusive ones (they'll tell you the business port model for each port of call on the dailies or by shore excursions desk). Either way normally you can only to purchase said shuttle onboard or at the port's proprietary shuttle services desk. They'll have a meet point usually in the port's bus parking lot and you'll be completely on your own from time you left ship. Those shuttles will usually to be done on regular urban commuter buses and will usually take you from port to the main transportation hub on the main location, which may need a connecting public bus ride to the main attractions.

Don't count on it! Plenty of parents will take their kids out one day early. The day before a half term is always just a movie day so there's no break in learning for one day.

But if it's only a Welsh school holiday then I'd say you have virtually nothing to worry about. There will be kids, but not hundreds.

If you're on the same trip as me, leaving on the 4th, then we should be ok on that front. The Welsh half term finishes on 4th November.
