bazzaw Posted November 8, 2022 #1 Share Posted November 8, 2022 I know that many here are very experienced cruisers - but I am now looking for advice from those who have recently taken out travel insurance for cruising . Times have changed and I guess that this also applies in the insurance World. The factors I am interested in are AGE 75+, and breast cancer first diagnosed over 2 years ago with all treatment completed by 1 year ago. Local cruise in Aussie waters. Your experience and advice please .
Cruisers47 Posted November 8, 2022 #2 Share Posted November 8, 2022 Hi i am 75 and have recently completed a couple of cruises in the Med. I took out insurance with Covermore which covered us including Covid. I fortunately do not have any existing issues. I have taken out insurance for a cruise next May but this time I am using my Credit card insurance but since it is an expensive cruise with flights I asked for the upgrade on the credit card insurance which covers cancellation costs as without the upgrade it does not. This is also with Covermore. after August, I think, the credit card insurance covers cruises. reading on CC the boats seem to look after you if you get Covid. hope this helps. valantine80 Posted November 8, 2022 #3 Share Posted November 8, 2022 We have recently got insurance for a domestic cruise through Insure and Go. My husband is 75+ had kidney cancer 2008. I am under 75 with two melanomas, 2009 and 2018. However a friend who had breast cancer a couple of years ago did not get past start with Insure and Go but can't remember who she eventually got it through. Good luck. . Rare cruiser3775 Posted November 8, 2022 #4 Share Posted November 8, 2022 I used 1Cover. They had more automatic exclusions on their medical list, and were competitive on price and accepted 75 years plus.
bazzaw Posted November 8, 2022 Author #5 Share Posted November 8, 2022 Hmm - just did a couple of trial runs to Insure and Go -- and Covermore . There was a remarkable similarity between the questions asked after declaring the breast cancer - and both Companies offered a Policy to cover us - but there was a remarkable difference in cost - for an 8 day cruise, Covermore was $711 while Insure and Go was $280. Makes you wonder , doesn't it???
valantine80 Posted November 8, 2022 #6 Share Posted November 8, 2022 We paid about $400 for 9night cruise and that was medical cover only but with a few other pre existing conditions.

NSWP Posted November 8, 2022 #8 Share Posted November 8, 2022 Barry step your way through a 1 Cover quote. I used them in Sept for a domestic cruise. I am 74 with a load of prexisting conditions. Premium was $218.

Kidney cancer in 2008, melanomas in 2009 an 2018 you are a low risk for life insurance on a short domestic cruise.

Because you are extremely unlikely to get sick on the cruise. I know two people dying of cancer who were given permission to travel overseas by their Specialists (one to UK and one to NZ, which both provide medical to Australians in an emergency). Both had successful last trips full of happy memories. Travel insurance, for a short period in Australia, is often overcharged for the risk. Travel insurance for my daughter who lived in London was much cheaper than mine in Australia, for the same trip!!

I understand that but not sure about the insurance companies. Some will not increase the premium to cover you for these and others will add a fair amount to the premium. I'm just sharing my experience so people are aware to shop around because some Australian insurance companies over charge for a low risk.

Local cruise in Aussie waters. Your experience and advice please . We have just completed the 7 night (8 days) Nth Qld cruise from Brisbane. This was a short cruise for us, less expensive and with the ship providing Covid coverage and both of us being covered on land by Medicare, we decided that this time we would take a risk and only take out the Bare Essentials Cruise policy offered by Insure & Go, which really only covers for evacuation and shipboard medical expenses (other than Covid). Our medical details are almost identical to yours. One of us aged 75+ and the other younger with the above diagnosis and treatment within the last 2 years as well as coronary artery disease. The premium was $251.29 of which $197.09 was for Travel plus $54.20 for the additonal special medical coverage. Covermore cover for lots of things including cancellation costs but we thought that if we had to cancel because of Covid, we would at least get a Future Cruise Credit from the Cruiseline. Luckily, we didn't have to claim this time, but Insure and Go have previously reimbursed us for shipboard medical expenses and missed ports on overseas cruises. Sometimes you get a discount online by using a promotional code.
cruisine21 Posted November 13, 2022 #15 Share Posted November 13, 2022 My daughter arrived in Hawaii yesterday. Less than 24 hours later she and her friend hiked up to Diamond Head. Afterwards when she got off the trolley she collapsed and fell backwards hitting her head on the concrete. She entered up being taken to ER my ambulance then put on a drip due to dehydration. geoff2802 Posted January 24, 2023 #19 Share Posted January 24, 2023 I'm currently arranging travel insurance for a few cruise holidays and found this thread useful. I found that Qantas' travel insurance is underwritten by NIB (the health insurer). I checked out NIB's direct travel insurance offer. https://www.nibtravelinsurance.com.au . The risks covered are very similar and NIB has higher coverage limits for some items. NIB is about 10% cheaper than Qantas for us (ages 59 and 56). YMMV. I can't vouch for the claims experience of either, although NIB probably processes Qantas' claims anyway.

NIB wouldn’t cover my husband [73] yet Qantas travel insurance [same underwriter] would! I found Qantas a few hundreds dollars cheaper than other insurers for an 11 night cruise. They might accept different pre-existing conditions. Or just a different underwriting person made the decision. I'm looking at Annual Multi Trip policies as we have 3 overseas trips in the next 12 months, so the cost is quite significant.

We found Qantas didn't cover our EMCs so it was Covermorefor us. Shame as the amount of money we've spent on TI this year would've meant a significant lift to our FF points balance. We must plan better and look at annual insurance; or hunt out for a good CC with comprehensive TI.
