But if we wanted to meet up with the others in the party, that was the only way we could communicate. If we ever got separated, she couldn't use the app to let us know. Then better to teach her that if she gets separated to go to Guest Services or any uniformed crew member for assistance. And I agree with those who say better to have at least a basic smartphone with the app. Walkie Talkies are annoying to everyone around you IF they work on a ship. A few short years ago I would have never said this. But now I find these things a basic part of my life. Not optional and not an added luxury. I am not judging at all but just stating that it is a sign of the times for me anyway. I'm not quite to the point where you are, but I think I'm getting there. On my last two side-to-side cruises, I started out without any Internet access, but folded two days in on both. Life is just so much easier (for me anyway) when I have it. I should note that when I'm on the road in the U.S., I don't need WiFi as much because I have some data and that's usually faster than any WiFi I can get.

I bought them at either Target or Best Buy. I don't know where they are anymore ... we haven't used them in years. We have also tried messaging on the app and we never get the messages because there isn't a notification so have gone back to the notes in the cabin thing. If all else fails, we agree to meet in the cabin around lunchtime, and then around 4 pm. It's also freeing to not feel like you have to carry your phone around! I completely agree. We vacation to get away and I really felt tethered to my phone on recent cruises.

Mostly we have some idea of where the other one is though. We highlight the activities we want to do in the daily so we just use stickies if one of us departs from the expected plan. This is the way..^^^ no phone to tote around..

Now if I could do the same with my casino stash. 🙂 Edited March 16, 2023 by PTC DAWG 1

I travel lots of remote places such as Nunavut Canada. My phone most places is good for a door stop. Can often get news and maybe wifi at lodging each night. After a couple days we actually talk to everyone in our group instead of text on our phones. Have been off grid for up to 5 weeks. The World was still there and only 1 or 2 events were still meaningful. We ask for 2 copies of daily schedule. Mark where DW and I are planning to attend and set up a meeting or two. Works fine.

That's great you've found a system that works for you. Having said that a smart phone doesn't have to be connected to the internet to be useful. It can be a source of music (which replaces the radio) It can be a place to read whatever you downloaded (replacing books, newspapers, magazines). It's a CAMERA (to photograph your travels). It can be a diary to write your thoughts about your travels (replacing a notebook). It's a place where ALL my travel information is located (replacing a folio of all the travel related documents for my vacation). It's a place for mindful games to stimulate the mind(replacing paper versions). Lots more things it can replace,

I can't pinpoint what specific settings allowed the phone to show text alerts from the Celebrity app. The only thing I can tell you is we had airplane mode on, connected to the ship's wifi, and had wifi calling activated. Both my and my husband's phone received text alerts with the actual messages typed on the Celebrity app. We have the top of the line Google Android Phones (Pixel 7 & 7Pro) and the latest OS, Android 13. This was on the Feb 18th Solstice sailing. Edited March 16, 2023 by kwokpot
